Exile Nation - Front Cover (RS-Large).jpg

"EXILE NATION tells the dirty story none of us really wants to hear. But we all should be listening. Author Charles Shaw 'did time' in prison and lived to write about it. The antiquated and terrible system he describes is Dickensian. Like Dickens, Shaw offers a metaphor for many of the ills that infect our economy and society. And screams for change." - John PerkinsNew York Times best-selling author of Confessions of an Economic Hitman  and Hoodwinked.

"I find Charles Shaw to be a man of integrity and passion devoted to seeing the reality of our times and to doing whatever he can to be of use in their transformation. His record as a spiritual journalist is an excellent one; he writes with elegance and ferocity as well as deep understanding of the issues. I have read his work and find it candid and exciting, with the capacity to reach and shape many minds...a man on a profound journey, with a message that resonates for our times." - Andrew Harvey: Author, Scholar and Founder of the Institute for Sacred Activism.

"Brilliant! The most powerful indictment of the prison industrial complex sustem I've yet come across. I'm in awe." - David Korten: Activist and Author, When Corporations Rule the World and The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community

"Writer and activist Charles Shaw's extraordinary Exile Nation is now online, a new book that recounts his fraught journey through Illinois' penal system after a drug-possession bust. In case you everthought there was something glamorous or romantic about life in the House of Numbers." - Eric Zorn, Chicago Tribune.

"Charles Shaw brings a rare combination of lived experience, compassion, and the necessary skill set to make a real difference in drug and criminal justice policy reform. His journey from drug war prisoner to drug war activist has shaped his gritty and authentic-story-telling abilities and writing style with a natural organizing strategy that puts people first." –Neva Welton: Co-author, Global Uprising, Confronting the Tyrannies of the 21st Century: Stories from a New Generation of Activists.

"In a field dominated by numbers and statistics, Exile Nation puts a human face on the consequences of our faileddrug policy. These lives are not squandered by necessity, but bypolitical choice and accompanying neglect." - Sanho Tree: Director, The Drug Policy Project of the Institute for Policy Studies

"It is only through the committed work of activists and policy reformers like Charles Shaw that we are able to get the new stories ofresponsible drug policy out to the public-at-large." - Rick Doblin, Ph.D: Founder, Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies

"Seeing as our criminal justice system in the United States isdysfunctional—and that's putting it politely—the arrival of CharlesShaw's book Exile Nation is a welcome addition to the growingchorus of voices calling for reform of the largest working railroad inAmerica: the criminal justice system." - Kevin Danaher, Ph.D: Co-Founder, Global Exchange & Green Festivals

The debut of…

Exile Nation: Drugs, Prisons, Politics & Spirituality

The powerful new book by Charles Shaw

"There are those moments that change us, and then there are those moments when we realize that we have changed. This book is about both."

Evolver and Reality Sandwich are proud to present the debut of our exclusive new series, Charles Shaw's Exile Nation: Drugs, Prisons, Politics & Spirituality. Exile Nation will appear in weekly excerpts throughout 2010.

Exile Nation is a work of "spiritual journalism" that grapples with the themes of drugs, prisons, politics and spirituality through Shaw's personal story. It is a memoir of his life as a writer, addict, activist, prisoner, and spiritual seeker, a mosaic of his descent into shadow, his personal reckoning, and the long slow crawl back out to reclaim his life, heal the past, and start over. Exile Nation is an archetypal story of self-discovery, a "Hero's Journey" metaphor for the political and spiritual awakening process that so many are experiencing at this crucial point in human evolution. In between the themes, it is an insider's look at the forgotten or excluded segments of our society, the disenfranchised lifestyles and subcultures existing in what Shaw calls the "exile nation."  They are those who have lost some or all of their ability to participate in the full opportunities offered by life in advanced industrial societies because of an arrest or conviction for a non-violent, drug-related, or "moral" offense, those who cannot participate in the credit economy, and those with lifestyle choices that involve radical politics and sexuality, cognitive liberty, and unorthodox spiritual and healing practices. Together they make up the new "evolutionary counterculture" of the most significant epoch in human history.

"The issues this book discusses are relevant now. The drug war is destabilizing major segments of the globe and threatening to collapse whole nations. The United States jails, imprisons, and “correctionally monitors” (supervision, probation, parole) more people than any other nation in the world, around 6 million, or 1 out of every 50 Americans.  Most are for non-violent drug offenses. This “correctional economy” which comprises the police, courts, and prisons, account for millions of jobs and billions of dollars. At the same time, state budgets are so overwhelmed they can’t afford to hold all the prisoners they have jammed into their systems like animals on a factory farm. Marijuana, on the verge of legalization, is the #1 cash crop in America. FDA-approved clinical trials of psychedelic therapies for some of life’s most debilitating illnesses are again underway after a 40-year lockdown, and alongside that, a shamanic revolution in consciousness is unfolding, reconnecting us with our spiritual selves and the earth that has supported us for so long. Surrounding all of this and providing context is the knowledge that we are in a time of profound and systemic change, everywhere: to the Earth and its ecosystem, to technology, to populations and politics, to energy, to consciousness, and to our very beings. The time is now!” (from the Introduction)

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Acknowledgments & Introduction -or- “How This Book Came To Be and Why You Are Reading It Online" (PDF)

PART I – MIND (2005)

Chapter One:  “Dead Time” (PDF)

This explosive first chapter is set in Chicago's infamous Cook County Jail. The book begins mid-story as the author enters the jail to begin a one-year prison sentence for possession of fourteen capsules of MDMA. Chapter One offers a detailed and harrowing look at what really goes on behind the walls of the largest, most dangerous, and corrupt detention facility in the nation. (posted in its entirety: 12.17.09)

Chapter Two:  "Hotel Hell"

Chapter Two is set inside the Stateville Northern Reception & Classification Center in Joliet, Illinois. It is the entry point for the Illinois Department of Corrections, where inmates are processed into the prison system to await shipment to their prison facility. While there, inmates endure 24-hour a day lockdown in their cells for weeks at a time with nothing to distract them but their own thoughts, which for some can be dangerous. (in four weekly installments: 01.07.10 - 01.28.10)

(Part 1)(Part 2)(Part 3)(Part 4) (FULL PDF)

Chapter Three: “Sweet Moline”

Largely told through a daily journal, Chapter Three is set inside the East Moline Correctional Center where the author served out his sentence in 2005. Follow along in real time as Shaw navigates prison life, meeting a diverse and compelling tapestry of inmates and employees, running afoul of white supremacists, and fighting to keep himself and the book safe when inmates accuse him of being an informant. The chapter ends with the arrival of Hurricane Katrina. (in ten weekly installments: 02.04.10 - 04.08.10)

(Part 1)(Part 2)(Part3)(Part 4)(Part 5)(Part 6)(Part 7)(Part 8)(Part 9)(Part 10) (FULL PDF)

PART II – BODY (2001-05)

Chapter Four: "Protest" or “The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions”

Set in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Boston, and San Francisco, Chapter Four goes back in time to explore the author's history, and then the first half of the decade as the author finally lets go of his addiction and enters the world of radical journalism and politics, beginning a long period of anger and political awakening. This chapter takes the reader through protests and conferences, police assaults and party politics, conspiracy theory and cognitive dissonance, culminating in the 2005 arrest which would send him to prison, and in the life-changing realization that there are powers greater than us operating in our lives on every conceivable level.

(Part 1)(Part 2)(Part 3)(Part 4)(Part 5)(Part 6)(Part 7)(Part 8)(Part 9)

Chapter Five: “Living in the Exile Nation”

Chapter Five is the darkest chapter of Exile Nation. Released from prison, unable to find meaningful work, and alienated from nearly everyone in his life, the author backslides into a state of suicidal depression and decides to end his life on New Year's Eve.

PART III – SPIRIT (2006-09)

Chapter Six: "Acceptance" or “Life 2.0”

Chapter Six tells the story of the author's rebirth and spiritual awakening, beginning with the event that saves his life, and follows him over the next three years as he sheds his old identity and begins healing the past and confronting the destructive forces of his shadow. He builds a life of his choosing, discovering spirituality, meaningful work, shamanic medicines, love and community, finally making the pilgrimage to Burning Man and entering the neotribal subculture. Through an amazing collection of friends, mentors and guides, the author slowly finds the strength to tell his story and move on.

Chapter Seven: "Epilogue: Los Angeles"

Chapter Seven completes the cycle which began ten years before where the story began, in Los Angeles, as the author holes up to finish writing Exile Nation, only to learn the hardest work is yet to come.

ADDENDUM - ACTION

The Secret History of the War on Drugs

The Secret History is a three-part essay which examines the global drug trade and the War on Drugs within the context of the Hegelian Dialectic, or the idea of the "Problem-Reaction-Solution Paradigm" as a means of foreign policy, covert operation, domestic policy, and social control. Highlights include the role of US intelligence services in the drug trade and in the psychedelic community, the connection between drug laws and racism, and how crack and heroin were intentionally used to destroy the African-American community.

amazing

It was painful waiting to read Chapter 2, but it was worth it! I am so hooked! What poignant, gritty, beautiful truth-telling! Way to go! Thank you for doing this important work! It's horrible that anyone has to go through this, but at last maybe now people can start seeing the truth about how things operate. I hope you don't mind, but I wrote about your book on my blog. I invite you to check it out. girlchasingfrogs.com. Please let me know if I have misquoted or misrepresented you at all. I included my own opinions too, but I think the separation is clear! Thank you again for your important work! Blessings!!

Should marijuana be legalized?

Obviously, we have been struggling lots of burdens that recession has brought to us. There have been lots of issue in around the world that everyone talks about. Talking about marijuana, if anyone opposes the California bill AB 390, and aren't calling simultaneously for the ban of alcohol or tobacco, are rank hypocrites. Historically, prohibitions rarely work, and for the most part backfire, leading to higher crime rates and people getting payday loans to secure that which they desire anyway, and end up paying too much because the prices shoot sky high as a direct result of prohibitions. It will benefit many, and hurt no one.

Blog

Weird. That persons comments are almost an exact quote of mine except they go to a weird blog. Bot, perhaps?

I'm flagging

Wait....those comments ARE an exact quote of my comments above, except with a false website instead of mine. Totally a bot or a spammer.

Part 7?

Not meaning to complain, but what happened to part 7? Nothing was posted last week. Talking about addiction - hey I'm hooked on this book! Looking forward to the rest of it.

I think that no one knows

I think that no one knows for sure what the future will bring, but after some time of being in this business one begins to be able to discriminate between what is substantive and structural and what is largely speculative. For me, at least, some things have an intuitive sense of being real and important, and the rest of the possibilities lack just enough gravitas that I know that they're only "ideas." That intuitive sense is supported when it becomes possible to triangulate from a number of independent sources that all point to the same conclusion -- the possibility has substance.
