Walking the Change

On Sunday, April 6, New Yorkers can commemorate the life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi by participating in a "conscious collective community action."
The month-long initiative kicks off with the BE THE CHANGE WALK (at 1pm), which will start at 4 different points around Manhattan and converge in Union Square Park, the site of New York’s Gandhi Memorial statue. The walk will be followed by a tribute to Gandhi and Satya Graha in Union Square Park. A traditional flower petal ceremony to honor Gandhi and his powerful message will end the event. Speakers include Philip Glass, Mark Kurlansky, Reverend Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou and more.

fabulous
I went to the march and rally yesterday, and it was a great little event. There are going to be more events all week, including a program at St John the Divine Cathedral next summer.
Perhaps reawakening the movement of nonviolent direct action/civil disobedience protest would be the best way to stop the Iraq War, Abu Ghraib, change government policies on climate change, etc. I wonder if there is any possibility of this movement becoming large and prominent again in the next few years.
Techniques of nonviolence can be learned by anyone. During the rally, someone recited a short term paper written by one of her students: "Question: Why are we violent but not illiterate? Answer: Because we were taught to read."
