Evolver Spores: The Rise of Visionary Culture
Wed, Nov. 17
As modern civilization hurtles down a path to self-destruction, bands of inspired people are forging a new culture that fuses the sacred rites and ecological values of pre-modern societies with cutting-edge art, science, and technology. Radically creative festivals such as Burning Man, Lighting in a Bottle, and Boom are at the vanguard of this future-primitive synthesis. It also can be observed in the rise of neo-shamanic literature and art, in the fantastic images of manga and anime, in the electro-tribal rhythms of DJ culture, in mystical hip hop, and even in blockbuster films like Avatar.
Check the list below to find a Spore in your area. Dates may be different depending on the city. You can also email the regional host (via their group page) if you’d like to get involved in the planning of the event. If there is not yet a Spore in your community, email remi((at))evolver((dot))net to start your own.Image: “Soma” by JonDissed on Flickr courtesy of Creative Commons Licensing. http://flickr.com/photos/jondissed/3906104822

We Need Shaman-Scientists!
I agree with the general point that a magical or shamanic element must be re-incorporated into modern civilization, as we fast approach the moment of our global shaman’s test. I think it’s important to remember, however, that magic and mysticism in the modern world is not limited to “crazy”, “irrational”, Burning Man, ayahuasca drinking hippie-types. It is also part of our Western scientific heritage, from John Dee and Isaac Newton to Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Carl Jung, Jack Parsons and even Ray Kurzweil. I really think that it’s from this group – the mystically inspired scientists and inventors – that the solutions to our global problems must come. It’s not enough to simply beat the drums in ecstatic celebration; someone must have the technical skills to actually perform the necessary rituals.
I have written a bit more about the need for "magical thinking" at my "doomer" blog: http://thedoomerreport.blogspot.com/2010/10/morning-of-magicians-magical...
