Giving Up the Green Bitch

In this 18-minute Tedx presentation, "Giving up the Green Bitch," Graham Hancock tells the story of his 24-year relationship with cannabis brought to an abrupt halt in 2011 after an encounter with ayahuasca, the sacred visionary brew of the Amazon. Along the way he explores the mystery of death, the problem of consciousness, and the implications for the human future of a society that wages total war on true cognitive liberty.

Vulnerable and interesting talk

I'm impressed at his courage to speak personally about his abuse of cannabis. Unfortunate title of the talk, however.

True Cognitive Liberty

One of the best talks I've ever heard, period. Simply Brilliant.

...

agreed.

(oh and yeah- the title is strange...not quite sure how that was pulled as the description from the 18 minute talk...it's a bit of a shame really)

good for Graham!

glad you are able to be so open and honest: as we continue to do so, our world will become a better place. but: it was an honor for a 24-year-old former business student/economist reader to smoke just one bowl with you in the geodesic dome you-know-where just that once. i hope we meet again :)

Title

Great article...please change the title. I thought Evolver and RS would be above this sort of title.

Cannabis Culture?

Really enjoyed this talk. Big GH fan. Cannabis does seem to be a drug that you 'grow out of' but it is different for other people. I am most intrigued by his ideas on death and consciousness. Most of all, I'm excited by the science which is emerging and can begin to prove these types of experiences, such as in this article: Our Soul Consciousness: http://www.consciousconnectionmagazine.com/2013/01/our-soul-consciousnes...

green bitch

perhaps i am a mere daft southerner, but perhaps the Green Bitch to which Graham refers here is his own incapacity to break bond with the plant? -mattheU jeffrey

Excellent talk. My personal

Excellent talk. My personal feeling on the subject is that the lessons of Cannabis can sink in even more strongly when you stop using it. There's a subtle relationship between pleasure and pain, chasing gain and receiving loss in return, and you must see both sides of the coin to understand the full equation. While smoking cannabis, the pleasure can be so intense that "normal" consciousness pales in comparison. One feels always on the verge of something big, some great revelation. And on the way you can have many great revelations and creative breakthroughs. But after a while, the method of liberation, like all methods, itself becomes bondage. "If only everyone smoked", you think, "the world would miraculously transform." And perhaps that's true in some ways. But the hippies discovered that turning on in itself is not enough. Overdoing Cannabis can just as easily retard your growth of consciousness as expand it. Like you, I'm not knocking it at all. I feel it can be beneficial in many ways. But neither extreme quite has the full truth: Neither the "War on Drugs" people who want it stamped out, nor drug advocates who think being high all day is the answer. Certainly all adults should be free and unencumbered to pursue such states if they wish. But the issue of what you're actually gaining from the experience in comparison to what you give up is more complex than most of us might acknowledge. For every gain in one capacity(pleasure, sensuality, stream of consciousness creativity) there is an equivalent diminishment in another. Such is the subtle balance of the universe. In that sense perhaps the greatest lesson one can learn from cannabis comes only when you give it up and can fairly evaluate in the light of day the full extent of your loss and gain.

I agree with you Skylar.

I agree with you Skylar.  What has been profound for me is that I can "tap into" / become aware of the Mother Spirit whenever I smoke cannabis (in moderation).  The spirit of the vine, of the Earth, I do not know?   Visionary states come so easily with the herb but I'm trying to grow towards not needing a substance to bring me back to that state.

They're our allies? Providing insight, healing, and comfort, while allowing us to be stewards for them and their home... But an abusive relationship is never any good.

insulting title

I would like to express dissatisfaction at the title of this talk as well. Calling cannabis "the green bitch" is insulting and demeaning. Would we call our mother a bitch? If we're trying to cultivate harmonious relations with nature and each other, we shouldn't be using this language towards plants, especially one which has healing and medicinal powers.

i agree

i agree with dwhite......words themselves can and do cast a 'spell', our language towards the plant teachers should be chosen well, and carefully....

War on sovereignty of consciousness

I'll take it a step further to the sovereignty of the individual human being.so many want to instruct others on how they should think, speak, and conduct themselves in a life which not one of us fully understands.

not the original title

here's the original video and I really don't know where the "green bitch" title came from.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WaeMyC86Dw

Great talk; Lose the awful title

Great talk, but the title is demeaning and sexist and has nothing at all to do with the talk. In fact, the term is not used at all in the speech. Could the headline writers perhaps look to the content of the talk for some ideas for a headline?

cannabis and ayahuasca plant teachers

my own experience with both teachers is that they are close allies. I use cannabis mainly for meditation and it has been fantastic tool to go deeper and reach higher levels of consciousness. I meditate at least once every day and use herb maybe once per week (and while meditating), but its influence can be felt at all other times I meditate. And like asking mother aya during ceremonies, I feel her strong guidance when using cannibis only. I believe in Hancock's situation, he was just using too often - of course mother aya's answer will be to pull back. But it is pretty well common sense too, everything in moderation. Keep moving towards the light....

Freedom

"If every man is to forego his freedom of action because many make licentious use of it, I know not what is the value of any freedom." J. Risdon Bennet, MD., ca 1890 Quoted from "Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers" Steven Harrod Buhner

long overdue

good info.....if you cant find ayahuasca..or the amazon is too far.....psilocybins can be found in one variety or another most anywhere..and a natural, private & quiet setting should suffice..remember...you want to feel comfortable & safe..because your eyes should be closed...headphones with meditation tracks are good...as well as night sounds... full moon nights are the nights to perform your vision quest...if your past the threshold stage..then go for a little too much doseage wise....a self induced...voluntary....non-violent...passive....pleasant....meaningful...neardeath experience...should commence....oh...and if you add a little of that green bitch...(bitch?)..(I like an edible version)...then...the KING of herbs...will be there to guide you as well.

THIS EXPERIENCE WAS MEANT FOR ALL...but was denied, lied about, and squandered with recreational use....

happy journeys,

Lou
