Thankfully Conscious

This year many families are opting for a cruelty-free, sustainable Thanksgiving dinner, in light of a recent investigation into the treatment of animals in a Butterball turkey farm, and the rise of the “slow food” and “locavore” movements.

The web is making a sustainable Thanksgiving easier than ever, with groups like the Consumers Union and the Eat Well Guide teaming up to create the Thanksgiving Local and Organic Food Challenge, a network of non-profits, chefs and individuals, that offers resources for the conscious consumer.

EatWell.org offers a search engine for sustainable and organic food in your city – you can search for restaurants, butchers, caterers, farmer's markets and more. Learn about heritage turkeys (genetically diverse breeds of turkeys, raised free-range and without antibiotics or growth-hormones), and where to buy them at SustainableTable.com. Find original Thanksgiving recipes and submit your own at ConsumersUnion.org and see OrganicConsumers.org for vegetarian Thanksgiving ideas.
