Tell Us What You Think
Submitted by Ken Jordan on Fri, 04/27/2007 - 14:36.
Tomorrow we unlock the door on the Reality Sandwich beta and invite friends and family to see what we've done, knock around the site for a bit, and give us feedback. We're trying to create a forum for the kinds of discussions, the sorts of news and opinion, that too often are pushed to the fringes. And give the imaginative its due. How are we doing? Your unconsidered comments (as Ginsberg said: "first thought, best thought") are very much appreciated.

Wide Circles
A much needed idea
Very well said, somantics. ;-)
Bravo!
Great to see RS up and running. It seems a bit thin at the moment, but of course this will change as the contributors saddle up and head west, guns blazing...
What I think the web needs is an earth-rooted but imaginatively freewheelin' gang of gold prospectors. Lets not hedge our bets...
Yeehaw!!
Best wishes to y'all,
Thom
This is great
Hint 1) Most people contributing to this site are intelligent. I live in Hollywood. It's like there's an intelligence drought here. This site is refreshing.
Hint 2) You're all on the same page as me, not just literally, but mentally. Psychology, Ecology, Life, Technology, Art... AS IF there are more interesting topics!
Hint 3) Pinchbeck made a pretty cool book, and I'll probably check out other stuff like this that he works on, just because I can trust it! :P
I look forward to seeing what all you crazy folks have to say.
Good start...
Constructive criticism
I look forward to spending a lot of time on this site.
However, the odd font sizes (17.6px, 14.4px etc) make some of the text unreadable because of the low contrast curves & diagonals [(/so!/)].
Please adjust the font sizes to a round number.
Maybe use a web-friendly (sans serif) font like Verdana too.
Readable content is more important than style, especially when the content really matters!
Viva la Revolucion!!

some reactions
I really appreciate the comments posted here so far, and hope to see some more discussion.
I also think that a sense of urgency should guide this enterprise. It certainly does for me.
At the same time, I agree with the comment made above that we should find a way to tilt the usual media material (celebs, sports, etc) in a Reality Sandwich direction. If anyone has ideas for this or specific stories to propose, I am interested.
I would really like to build a large audience for this venture in a short period of time. If anyone has ideas about how to do that, I am all ears. Even better: perhaps they can volunteer some time to help us spread the word.

Breadth and Depth of RS?
I remember how disappointed I was recently with the press coverage of B. Spears' shaving of her golden locks. I felt it was quite an eloquent act. I agree, it'd be great if RS contributors were moved to interpret contemorary media and pop culture. Those with ears to hear, let them shear. Jean Gebser wrote:
"We have only one option: in examining the manifestations of our age, we must penetrate them with sufficient breadth and depth that we do not come under their demonic and destructive spell. We must not focus our view merely on these phenomena, but rather on the humus of the decaying world beneath, where the seedlings of the future are growing, immeasurable in their potential and vigor. Since our insight into the energies pressing toward development aids their unfolding, the seedlings and inceptive beginnings must be made visible and comprehensible... If our consciousness, that is, the individual person's awareness, vigilance, and clarity of vision, cannot master the new reality and make possible its realisation, then the prophets of doom will have been correct. Other alternatives are an illusion; consequently, great demands are placed on us, and each one of us have been given a grave responsibility, not merely to survey but to actually traverse the path opening before us."
Typical prophetic genius from the great JG, we'd all of us do well to remember these words.
Best to all, Thom
ok so ?
Hi Thom,
Okay, so do you want to go for it?
Yours,

So...
Daniel, I'd love to contribute to RS, especially as gossip columnist...! But I'm travelling a lot at the moment and have recently become a father, so it would be negligent of me to make any commitments.
That said, I believe that RS needs to work (especially if I am to avoid swimming up the Welsh valleys with a wife and a kid and a minority language on my back) so if I come up with any useful ideas you can be sure that I will pass them on to the editorial team.
Best wishes as ever Thom.

Volunteer...
I am elated to be a part of this project. It has come along as precisely what I was searching for -- a forum in which to voice my thoughts, to debate and share ideas of vital (and yes, urgent) interest to me, and a place of like minds that will only attract and influence more minds in kind.
I have made arrangements in my life over the past years to distance myself from distracting relationships, vocations, and financial burdens, stoking the back-burner intuition that I will need to be fluid and free to whatever calls me. If we can turn this venture into a movement, I am gladly available to volunteer whatever is necessary.

upside down replies
Am I the only one who finds the reply tree of the main site (and this forum) difficult to read?
Personally, I much prefer a layout where responses cascade down the page chronologically, as opposed to starting from the bottom with the most recent posts at the top.
That's about my biggest complaint with the whole site.

Comment notification/broader audience
Really, the only problem I have with this site from a technical standpoint is no comment notification. I frequently scan my blog page for new comments so I don't miss anything. When I comment on someone else's blog and someone replies to me there, there's no way to track that, so far as I know. E-mail notification when a post or comment of mine has been replied to (a la LiveJournal and other social network standards) would be huge.
As for increasing readership, I am bursting with ideas and located in a good area for this (Portland, Oregon). Business cards or postcards to hand out would help -- either something I could request from editorial staff or something in .pdf I could print out myself from the site.
I'm also really eager to do the "Reality Maven" thing and coordinate local gatherings. My day job is as a project manager for a local speaker, so I can definitely lend some skills. I'm just a bit low on ideas of what we'd all get together *for* and how to tie it in to RS.

No Posting of New Forum Topics?
I've been trying to start a forum topic about my recent adventures in wonderland with the elves - oh and also link to some news articles of interest, but the forum won't let me. It seems to be treating my posts as articles submitted for publication on the front page - which they are not.
Do new forum topics have to be submitted to the editorial team for approval? Do any of the eds read the forum? I give up for today anyway...
love y'all,

Is it just me or...
I've been scanning around the site for a couple-a weeks now and it may just be my lack of perception but can we post blog entries if we are not featured contributors? Could be that this feature will become available out of beta and I just haven't found the relevant information but I think a non-featured contribution sub-page might engender more entelechy.
Phi is not the only fruit.clarity. not.
Heh. I didn't want to just edit my earlier post but I think I could have been clearer. The forum is a great place to submit work, essays, discursive or no, but some kind of front-end publishing in the form of a titled link to a members-submissions page might encourage people to make more forum posts.
I understand that this would mean someone, uh... reading, these posts and would incur some kind of entity-hours spent on the process but if you want people involved in the site a sense of contribution to the process other than comments could be expedient.
Phi is not the only fruit.
and I'm bloody getting rid of that quote!

RS nicknames?
I've been wondering: is there a nickname for Reality Sandwich users? Like Burning Man attendees are "burners", etc. What could a nickname for Reality Sandwich people be? "Sandwiches" wouldn't quite sound right... ;3 Just a random thought.
