Tell Us What You Think

Tomorrow we unlock the door on the Reality Sandwich beta and invite friends and family to see what we've done, knock around the site for a bit, and give us feedback. We're trying to create a forum for the kinds of discussions, the sorts of news and opinion, that too often are pushed to the fringes. And give the imaginative its due. How are we doing? Your unconsidered comments (as Ginsberg said: "first thought, best thought") are very much appreciated.

Comments

Love it!

I have been waiting for a site like this for a long time. I hope that in the future I will be able to contribute an article or two.

Great post. I Imagine it

Great post. I Imagine it would interest a wide audience. I would certainly link to it.

A much needed idea

There should be an overwhelming sense of urgency like a flight from a grip of a predator. The scepticism of profound and incoming change needs to be answered by full dispensation of the available and undisputed facts. Things are changing and if we are to have any chance of controlling, or even tolerating, the effects then we need to start pushing now. These are weird times; I think that such is the overflow of information into our heads, that we’ve become paralysed. Like the proverbial rabbit in the head lights we know not which way to now turn. What is needed is a new filter to discern the actual from the fabricated, the imperative from the unnecessary, the need from the want. Ideas are the thing that got us here, and ideas are the only thing that can get us through – from that I have to deduce that what we’re experiencing now is, in its own way, a natural and necessary phenomena, a way to tighten the screws, or squeeze our collective zit. What we’re having is an evolution, even as some of us are regressing, we’re getting close to breaking into the layers above and below us – it means reviving our potential. It's ideas like this site that are uniting like minds across the globe - i'm looking forward to fully awakening and contributing. Thanks very much

Very well said, somantics. ;-)

Very well said, somantics. ;-)

Bravo!

Great to see RS up and running. It seems a bit thin at the moment, but of course this will change as the contributors saddle up and head west, guns blazing...

What I think the web needs is an earth-rooted but imaginatively freewheelin' gang of gold prospectors. Lets not hedge our bets...

Yeehaw!!

Best wishes to y'all,

Thom

This is great

I can't tell you how much I like this website already (comparitively to most other websties especially). I can only give you the following adorable hints:
Hint 1) Most people contributing to this site are intelligent. I live in Hollywood. It's like there's an intelligence drought here. This site is refreshing.
Hint 2) You're all on the same page as me, not just literally, but mentally. Psychology, Ecology, Life, Technology, Art... AS IF there are more interesting topics!
Hint 3) Pinchbeck made a pretty cool book, and I'll probably check out other stuff like this that he works on, just because I can trust it! :P
I look forward to seeing what all you crazy folks have to say.

Good start...

I'm extremely excited to see this site evolve...

Constructive criticism

I look forward to spending a lot of time on this site.

However, the odd font sizes (17.6px, 14.4px etc) make some of the text unreadable because of the low contrast curves & diagonals [(/so!/)].

Please adjust the font sizes to a round number.

Maybe use a web-friendly (sans serif) font like Verdana too.

Readable content is more important than style, especially when the content really matters!

Viva la Revolucion!!

Recently I realized that the internet IS a *magical* tool precipitating (hopefully) rapid, global consciousness expansion. The good Dr. Leary was sure right about that one. Those who read, write and relate to these stories are my brothers and sisters. Thanks for all you do, and great site! Keep up the good work, and keep having fun doing it; it's making a difference. ^_^

Hit the Highs

Looks as though there's a broad selection of topic areas already. What might be a good draw for yet-untapped readers is a selection of deceptively mainstream arenas -- for instance, celebrity, gossip, sports, mass culture -- that, graced in Reality Sandwich guise, can be tied to the central mission of the site. I'm sure I'll have more to say on this, and won't hesitate to offer story suggestions and commentary. "Everything I know about life I learned in the kitchen."

some reactions

I really appreciate the comments posted here so far, and hope to see some more discussion.

I also think that a sense of urgency should guide this enterprise. It certainly does for me.

At the same time, I agree with the comment made above that we should find a way to tilt the usual media material (celebs, sports, etc) in a Reality Sandwich direction. If anyone has ideas for this or specific stories to propose, I am interested.

I would really like to build a large audience for this venture in a short period of time. If anyone has ideas about how to do that, I am all ears. Even better: perhaps they can volunteer some time to help us spread the word.

Breadth and Depth of RS?

I remember how disappointed I was recently with the press coverage of B. Spears' shaving of her golden locks. I felt it was quite an eloquent act. I agree, it'd be great if RS contributors were moved to interpret contemorary media and pop culture. Those with ears to hear, let them shear. Jean Gebser wrote:

"We have only one option: in examining the manifestations of our age, we must penetrate them with sufficient breadth and depth that we do not come under their demonic and destructive spell. We must not focus our view merely on these phenomena, but rather on the humus of the decaying world beneath, where the seedlings of the future are growing, immeasurable in their potential and vigor. Since our insight into the energies pressing toward development aids their unfolding, the seedlings and inceptive beginnings must be made visible and comprehensible... If our consciousness, that is, the individual person's awareness, vigilance, and clarity of vision, cannot master the new reality and make possible its realisation, then the prophets of doom will have been correct. Other alternatives are an illusion; consequently, great demands are placed on us, and each one of us have been given a grave responsibility, not merely to survey but to actually traverse the path opening before us."

Typical prophetic genius from the great JG, we'd all of us do well to remember these words.

Best to all, Thom

ok so ?

Hi Thom,

Okay, so do you want to go for it?

Yours,

dp

So...

Daniel, I'd love to contribute to RS, especially as gossip columnist...! But I'm travelling a lot at the moment and have recently become a father, so it would be negligent of me to make any commitments.

That said, I believe that RS needs to work (especially if I am to avoid swimming up the Welsh valleys with a wife and a kid and a minority language on my back) so if I come up with any useful ideas you can be sure that I will pass them on to the editorial team.

Best wishes as ever Thom.

a humble smirk

First of all - HELLO everyone! I can tell you all are just as excited as I am to see this site finally up and running! I am very pleased by the layout: how the 3 navigation bars frame the screen and allow direct links to every topic one would look for; the eye-catching top topic logos (except 'life' looks like a baseball, strange how our minds like to catagorize everything...)and bright colors. Also, it's been advertising mate all day! I swear theres no finer drink than mate... I do however agree with Perceval about the font. As far as the content, if it is tied to action, I feel this has the potential to change the world in extraordinary ways! Truly the idea brings a humble smirk to my face. Hooray!

Now that's a quote!

Thank you for the quote, Thom. I love it! :)

Volunteer...

I am elated to be a part of this project. It has come along as precisely what I was searching for -- a forum in which to voice my thoughts, to debate and share ideas of vital (and yes, urgent) interest to me, and a place of like minds that will only attract and influence more minds in kind.

I have made arrangements in my life over the past years to distance myself from distracting relationships, vocations, and financial burdens, stoking the back-burner intuition that I will need to be fluid and free to whatever calls me. If we can turn this venture into a movement, I am gladly available to volunteer whatever is necessary.

Quite the Worth-While Use of CyberSpace

Very groovy and thought provoking. I've been skimming little tid-bits for a few weeks now and finally decided to start an account. i'm very much pleased with this site and think that it has the potential to be a real force of some sort in the future if everything happens just right. I'd very much like to be a part of it in some way. -Jack Shelton, Psychopharmacological Enthusiast

upside down replies

Am I the only one who finds the reply tree of the main site (and this forum) difficult to read?

Personally, I much prefer a layout where responses cascade down the page chronologically, as opposed to starting from the bottom with the most recent posts at the top.

That's about my biggest complaint with the whole site.

Local chapters

I think your crab-so-lutely right about this suggestion my friend. Local chapters eh? Sounds good, like a non-evil illuminati, always fancied being in something like that. Can we have an insignia, maybe a sacred sandwich that incorporates the golden mean? We could fund the printing of a information pack for posting out to each chapter, and a quarterly newsletter etc. What do you think? Oh, can we have a hat of some sort as members? Making the Connection

................

Comment notification/broader audience

Really, the only problem I have with this site from a technical standpoint is no comment notification. I frequently scan my blog page for new comments so I don't miss anything. When I comment on someone else's blog and someone replies to me there, there's no way to track that, so far as I know. E-mail notification when a post or comment of mine has been replied to (a la LiveJournal and other social network standards) would be huge.

As for increasing readership, I am bursting with ideas and located in a good area for this (Portland, Oregon). Business cards or postcards to hand out would help -- either something I could request from editorial staff or something in .pdf I could print out myself from the site.

I'm also really eager to do the "Reality Maven" thing and coordinate local gatherings. My day job is as a project manager for a local speaker, so I can definitely lend some skills. I'm just a bit low on ideas of what we'd all get together *for* and how to tie it in to RS.

RSS Feeds

Nice site. I'm curious why you don't supply RSS feeds. Or am I missing something? Most of my post readings are through an RSS reader and I ignore anything else.

boing boing, create digital music, lifehacker, damninteresting, instructables, canihaschezeburger, scott adams, 1000words, mentalfloss, 43folders, etc., etc., all provide RSS feeds.

rss also

hi, great site, just exploring it now. I too would be interested in using the rss / xml feeds. I think I read this is a drupal site (& the login page looks like drupal) so to enable these - enable the 'syndication' module. u can turn off the block if it's cluttering the page. then the site feed will be something like http://www.realitysandwich.com/node/feed + each blog/user will have their own automatically also. cheers kath

Looks good!

This site looks like it has a lot of potential. Having only recently discovered it, I am a bit disappointed at the seeming lack of activity on the forum. I'd be happy to contribute somehow. Ever since I tuned in to the massive changes that are happening right now, their ideas have seemed to grow virally in my consciousness. Everything I do now is affected. And I want to help. I used to be incredibly disenchanted with our society, and I still am, but seeing communities like this where people are actively trying to bring about change, rather than merely grumbling and bemoaning the current state of things with the sense that we've already lost, gives me hope.

Captivated

It felt like fresh air. I stumbled into the site from a comment on the Boingboing review of the ZeitGeist movie. I found the piece by S T Frequency first class. Exploring the site I began to wonder what the blazes was going on. I was captivated. Search difficult to use, as someone else said; forum strangely quiet. I very, very much hope you can keep it going and maintain a high standard. I would love to contribute. Writing at http://www.chrislight.net/ and some photos at http://photos.chrislight.net/, but all I really want is for you to stick around. Please keep going. Deep regard.

This might be a tad off

This might be a tad off topic but I think this site is already reaching alot of people subconsciously like some universal conciousness finally coming together...as if more and more minds are opening up to these sort of ideas. I found this site through a friend whom I share similar ideas with. But then a few weeks later without realizing it I had picked up Daniel Pinchbeck's book 2012. And then I realized that he was associated with this site...though I hadn't visited the site for a long time. I found it strange but not anything coincidental. Perhaps my brain picked up his name on the site without me being consciously aware of it and then again compelled me to buy his book at the bookstore. That or Daniel dabbles in witchcraft and put a spell on me to go buy his book!! haha I'm just joking. But I just want to say to Daniel, I laugh while reading your book, not because I think its ludicrous or silly, its because you write everything I have already thought or everything I want to hear. I suppose I was just shocked and happy. I found it heart warming to find that other people in this world have similar thoughts to mine. Knowing that this site is here and I am able to access all kinds of new information and new possibilities makes me happier in life...as sad as that may sound. If there is any way I can help just let me know. I don't really know how I can help but I would like to somehow get this site out to more people.

Podcast

Congratulations to all who contribute to this site. What an eloquent, deeply felt manifestation of what so many of us are feeling and becoming aware of at this very moment. Is there any consideration of starting a Reality Sandwich podcast? This would provide yet another way for folks to digest the sandwich. I know I love listening to podcasts as I cook and water my plants, maybe others do too?

idea / request

Would there be any easy way to add some code that allowed a user to save articles in a "favorites" folder on the site (a la Myspace "add to favorites")? I frequently read great mini-posts that are soon to be lost forever as time goes by, unless I bookmark each page on my browser.

No Posting of New Forum Topics?

I've been trying to start a forum topic about my recent adventures in wonderland with the elves - oh and also link to some news articles of interest, but the forum won't let me. It seems to be treating my posts as articles submitted for publication on the front page - which they are not.

Do new forum topics have to be submitted to the editorial team for approval? Do any of the eds read the forum? I give up for today anyway...

love y'all,

Thom.

PS here's one of the things I was trying to post,  without, alas, my insightful and witty byline: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/05/indigenous_brazilians_protest.h...

That's neat, I had an old

That's neat, I had an old guy in a forest (just some random dude) teach me how to talk to trees, and then he said I could see elves and asked me why I denied their existence. I was really confused, I mean I draw elves and stuff, I've always had a fascination with elves because of my belief that they are a perfect race that coexists with nature not against it. But I don't think I ever physically saw one in this reality. Just thought it was weird...I know its not relevant to what your saying but I just thought I'd write down what I was thinking when I read your post.

Gratitude

This evening I was suffering a bout of anxiety because it seems the shift we're all bracing for is rapidly approaching, and I'm scared. Fortunately for me, Reality Sandwich is here -- a community of likeminded people who don't find me insane for worrying about this stuff. I stumbled upon a post in which someone said we ought simply to prepare ourselves, in order that we may help others into whatever transition comes to pass. And some inner knowledge also came to me, to reassure me that today life is still as I know it, and that I will be guided, and that I have to take it day by day. The Hopi prophecy (the river thing?) was eery and comforting at the same time.

Is it just me or...

I've been scanning around the site for a couple-a weeks now and it may just be my lack of perception but can we post blog entries if we are not featured contributors? Could be that this feature will become available out of beta and I just haven't found the relevant information but I think a non-featured contribution sub-page might engender more entelechy.

Phi is not the only fruit.

clarity. not.

Heh. I didn't want to just edit my earlier post but I think I could have been clearer. The forum is a great place to submit work, essays, discursive or no, but some kind of front-end publishing in the form of a titled link to a members-submissions page might encourage people to make more forum posts.

I understand that this would mean someone, uh... reading, these posts and would incur some kind of entity-hours spent on the process but if you want people involved in the site a sense of contribution to the process other than comments could be expedient.

Phi is not the only fruit.

Reality Sandwich

A very impressive site. The only troubles i'm having is it's not really user friendly, and everything seems mashed together like a newspaper. The information the site contains is amazing, just not eye catching. ~Logan-Troy-Parrish~

RS nicknames?

I've been wondering: is there a nickname for Reality Sandwich users? Like Burning Man attendees are "burners", etc. What could a nickname for Reality Sandwich people be? "Sandwiches" wouldn't quite sound right... ;3 Just a random thought.
