Tacos Against Toxic Waste

Though the toxic waterway has been gaining more attention in recent years, many people who live outside New York still don't know that Newtown Creek, which runs a small portion of the border between Brooklyn and Queens, is one of the most polluted industrial sites in the country. The area was finally proposed as an EPA Superfund Site in 2009, but local residents are growing weary of stalled efforts to clean the river of its domestic and industrial pollutants.
Enter Newtown Radio (live! local! and loud!) and the Newtown Creek Alliance, both seeking to raise money for and awareness about the problem. Their new monthly concert series, held in Bushwick's Tortilleria Mexicana Los Hermanos, aka the Taco Factory, kicks off this Friday. Local bands from the Brooklyn scene, like I'm Turning Into and Snakes Say Hisss!, will provide the music so you can dance to while stuffing delicious Mexican food into your face for a good cause. The concerts continue once a month through December.
