2008 NY Arab and South Asian Film Festival
lAlwan for the Arts, 3rd i NY, and the South Asian Women's Creative Collective are once again joining forces to bring New York audiences the best in recent features, docs, & shorts from North Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and their diasporas at prestigious venues such as Tribeca Cinemas, Columbia University, Art in General, and NYU. Scheduled for March 5-16, 2008, the New York Arab and South Asian Film Festival (NYASAFF) strives to bring you films and videos that achieve the highest artistic quality as well as provide a much-needed counterpoint to the stereotypical representations often encountered in mainstream media. Although our organizations came together as a result of the geopolitical realities of the contemporary post 9-11 world, over time, we have also discovered the need to reflect on the complex and intertwined histories of these regions and the ways in which our art, music, philosophy, and literature have enriched and inflected each other over millennia. As we finalize the 2008 NYASAFF program, we are happy to announce several highlights and themes that should delight and challenge viewers. The 2008 fest rolls out a slew of US and NY Premiere features that range from politically astute comedies to gritty, yet poignant examinations of urban poverty. An emerging theme amongst this roster of films is the multi-faceted nature of sexual desire in the Arab & South Asian world, stories of love and attraction marked by racial and class tension, war, religious restrictions, and the hardships of migration. Joseph Massad, Associate Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia University and author of Desiring Arabs - a diverse compendium of Arabic writing from the nineteenth century to the present charting changes in Arab sexual attitudes, will guest curate a retrospective program, Bellydancing in Egyptian Cinema. Tribeca alternative arts space, Art in General, will play host to an evening of Art Videos, that will be guest curated by Özkan Cangüven, a graduate of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, and Swati Khurana, a member of South Asian Women's Creative Collective and media artist, who has put together program of experimental Arab & South Asian shorts that will examine the subject of storytelling and its complicated connection to the real. Finally, filmmaker Tala Hadid has put together a collection of videos that take innovative formal approaches to the notion of resistance against contemporary imperialisms

We're keeping things rolling strong in March with a cross border mashout featuring special guest, Ghislain Poirier. Jumping down from Montreal on the mighty Ninja Tune banner, Ghislain comes correct with big, dirty beats and some of the most out-of-control ragga riddims and deconstructed abstract hip hop to date. Poirier has become renowned globally for his bass slammin' remixes that continue to further solidify his title as "king of the bounce". He has remixed tracks for UK grime/hip hop sensation Lady Sovereign (Def Jam), The Editors, Champion, Bassnectar, and Pierre Lapointe, which garnered much critical acclaim and significant attention from publications such as pitchforkmedia, RES Magzine and XLR8R, to name just a few. Flowing effortlessly from global hip hop, grime, Baile beats, Booty bass, crunk, Baltimore and much more GP brings hordes of Montrealers to his consistently sold out Bounce le Gros party month after month. Burning Man Regional Meeting
PDF Conference Call coming up Saturday Afternoon. Conference Line to be announced soon...
Burning Man Regional Contact in NJ Here's some things they'll be talking about : (email from Jill) We've had alot of issues with dogs at PDF, including fights, dogs getting neglected, humans getting bitten, so it has been suggested (not by me) that we have an outright ban on all dogs (except those owned by the Vets and BigE). The ban is coming up for a vote at this Saturday's planning meeting. Come to the meeting and let us know how you feel about it. Or if you can't come to the meeting, you can dial in and voice your vote on the conference call. The least effective of all methods would be to post your opinion right here and it will be taken into consideration (I'll read it aloud at the meeting), but you won't be in a position to respond to any debate about the subject.

Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra) Workshop with Natalie Ullmann
"When you have the largeness of heart to let go and forgive others, you free yourself to be able to move forward with your life. This ability to forgive can be cultivated within you by remembering that others, just like you, are only doing the best they can in any given situation. Backbends move us into our future. The ease that you have in moving into your future will be reflected in the ease you bring to backbends. Ease comes as you develop your ability to accept the limited capacity of others. Through forgiving others you open to your own limitless capacity for compassion, which will catapult you towards enlightenment: the realization of the Oneness of Being, freedom from disconnection." Sharon Gannon, Focus of the Month , November 2006. In this workshop we will work with mantra, asana, meditation and visualization to explore the relationship between forgiveness, surrender, compassion and backbending. Our asana practice will illuminate the relationship between creating a harmonious relationship with the earth energetically and through action, and moving forward through backbending. Together we will surrender our resistances and cleanse our hearts of past karmas so that we may creatively move forward into a new future. 30% of the proceeds of this workshop will go to "BlinkNow". (www.blinknow.org). BlinkNow is a grass-roots organization working to empower young people to become pioneers in developing their own solutions to world poverty.

Everything is God; An Introduction to Non-Dual Judaism with Jay Michaelson
The principle of non-duality—that everything is One—is familiar to spiritual seekers from a variety of mystical paths. Kabbalah, Judaism's mystical and esoteric tradition, also expresses this idea, in uniquely provocative and sometimes startling ways. This evening we'll combine text study (from sources as diverse as Maimonides' Guide to the Perplexed, the Zohar, and the Baal Shem Tov), contemplation and discussion to explore key Jewish teachings on nonduality. We will also offer comparative insights and explore how non-duality is actually lived—so please bring your own knowledge and experience (from any tradition) to add to the conversation, and be prepared for surprise: enlightenment is not what you think… and neither is God. Jay Michaelson has taught Kabbalah and spirituality for over 15 years at institutions ranging from Yale University to Elat Chayyim. He is a visiting professor at Boston University Law School and the author of God in Your Body: Kabbalah, Mindfulness and Embodied Spiritual Practice and the soon-to-be-published Non-dual Judaism. www.metatronics.net
