Michael Garfield: "Sketches of an Emerging Human Mythos: Evolution, Alchemy, Art, & Activism in an Age of Transition"  Drawing on sources from evolutionary theory to sacred geometry, from cosmology to jazz, Michael playfully deconstructs the boundaries between self and other, the one and the many to offer a rare perspective on the crisis and opportunity of our age – an emerging worldview aware of the vast patterns in which humanity is embedded, and how each of us is a crucial participant.   Additionally, Michael will play his acoustic-electronic music as a performance of this emergent integrated paradigm – a dynamic concert in which science and art, left and right hemispheres, head and heart unite.  Trained in evolutionary ecology only to become a performance painter, essayist, and cyber-troubadour, integralist Michael Garfield is intent on demonstrating how everything is equally art, science, and spiritual practice. Writing extensively and expansively on the creative intersections of human inquiry and creativity, his combination of independent research and cohesive multimedia expression point the way toward an integrated exploration of time, life, and mind: his work straddles communities, ignoring battle lines drawn between transhumanism (H+ Magazine), integral philosophy (Integral Institute), technoshamanism (Reality Sandwich), popular culture (D/Visible Magazine, Colorado Music Board), and academia (University of Kansas, John F. Kennedy University).

Hoboken Studio Artists' Tour/Food Drive @ Hoboken Art Garden

Raindate for reception is Saturday 6-10pm.  Opening Reception:  We are happy to announce a weekend-long Food Drive as part of the 4th and Jackson Art Garden's inaugural year participating in the Hoboken Studio Artists' Tour. For those of you unfamiliar with the space, it is a housing complex and adjacent lot in which the top floor has been turned into an art gallery and the lot has been transformed into a viable space for sculpture, installation, music, and foliage. This work is the brainchild of Rolando Ramos, a man currently nominated for "Outstanding Scene Contributor" in the Hoboken Music Awards.

Featured throughout this event will be the works of the following artists:  Upstairs Gallery - Hugo Juarez (Fine Artist/Mosaics)- Daniela Puliti (Fine Art) http://www.thinklaughfeel.com/  - Nathalie Zaro (Photography) http://www.facebook.com/NatZaro?v=info

Outside - Jordan André De Liso (interactive recycled sculpture)

Jordan is an aspiring Green Engineer with a BS in Engineering from Tufts University. He feels strongly about reducing our impact on the Earth and tries to use as many found or salvaged objects as possible in his work.

As his birthday is later in November, he would like nothing more as a present (albeit, a bit early) than to have as many people come out to see some of his work and contribute to this great cause

http://www.myspace.com/flopsuey; http://www.facebook.com/maketheworldyourinstrument

Please be sure to bring canned food or other non-perishables for the opening festivities.Come celebrate the opening From 7-10pm, in the sculpture garden, viewers are allowed to enter the garden, and interact with the art directly while enjoying refreshments.    * the Barry Carrion, Jr. Trio will now be providing auditory enlightenment in the way that only jazz in the evening can. Also, we have obtained a permit for a small fire to help keep warm, so feel free to bring food supplies (i.e. s'mores, etc.) and acoustic instruments to enjoy throughout the night.  Saturday, November 6th:  Official Tour Day #1:  Day one of the Hoboken Artist Studio tour begins at noon and continues till 6pm. The Path of Deep Transformative Experience

A Talk by Kevin Sachs.  Do you attend experiential workshops and ceremonies and have deep experiences, yet wonder if you could do more to incorporate them into your life? Do you return home feeling unsettled and “stirred up” and not know what to do? Do you wish you could incorporate your experiences into one integrated life path that uses them as a starting point for ongoing inner work and lasting growth? Experiential workshops, breathwork, shamanic journeys and ceremonies, vision quests, sweat lodges, trance dances, ecstatic chanting and intensive yoga or meditation retreats all involve working in nonordinary states of consciousness. However, by themselves, nonordinary states and experiences are just the beginning of a complete and rewarding path. This talk will cover what nonordinary states are, why they have the potential to move us toward healing and wholeness, and how to work effectively with them. Topics will include Stan Grof's maps of consciousness, transpersonal and mystical experiences, working with difficult emotional material, shadow work, the importance of containment, set and setting, and the need for adequate preparation and integration around the experiences. I will discuss methods I use to prepare and integrate, including Eugene Gendlin's Focusing. I will also cover the archetypes of initiation, death and rebirth, and how understanding these overarching themes helps us to work more effectively with powerful experiences.

Awakening Your True Voice

Sean McClelland, MMus, CAT.  Every person possesses a powerful, natural voice that reveals who he or she truly is. Often, mental and physical tension, past experiences and fears lead to inhibitions that restrict the natural flow of the voice, resulting in a forced, unnatural sound and blocked energy centers. This course creates a supportive environment in which self-consciousness will dissolve and the natural voice will emerge. To encourage vocal growth and development, a repertoire of exercises is given that will increase mental and physical awareness, improve body alignment and stimulate natural, reflexive breathing. We will also work on opening the channel for sound vibrations, resonance and range. Group singing of folk songs and spirituals helps participants to express themselves with sensitivity.  Note: No previous vocal background required.

Medicine Wheel Ceremony & Thanksgiving Potluck Feast With Walking Hawk

The Medicine Wheel is symbolic of the forever-evolving Circle of Life, always bringing new truths and lessons into our awareness. Walking Hawk, a Cherokee elder and heyoka medicine man, will explain Native American medicine wheel teachings and how to use those lessons in our daily lives. Then, as a group, we will have the opportunity to create a medicine wheel and participate in ceremony. Creating a wheel is a very powerful and objective tool for transformation. By revealing our connection to the many relationships in our lives, we are able to see where our thinking and perspectives are keeping us stuck. Afterwards, we will end the evening with a Thanksgiving potluck celebration. Please bring: * A crystal or stone for the Medicine Wheel Ceremony * A dish to share for our Thanksgiving Potluck Feast. Walking Hawk grew up under the keen tutelage of wise elders from a mixture of different nations. Being exposed to the humble ways of the ancestors gave Walking Hawk the insight to train and reflect on the oneness of Mother Earth and all who live with her. He walks the contrary path with Spirit and lives in compassionate service to the people. Many people come from all over to attend his healing lodges and ceremonies. His openness and insight have also brought him to many ceremonies and gatherings, both open and secret, throughout the nation and abroad.  Walking Hawk, in collaboration with Linda Fernandez, will also be available for private healing sessions & ceremonies.

When Your Awakening Becomes A Crisis - A Talk by Kevin Sachs

Do you feel like you’re losing your mind? Are you losing your grip on reality or acting in strange ways? Do you have spontaneous spiritual experiences and not know why? Are you suddenly overwhelmed by powerful emotions? Have you had a life-transforming experience or do you have a spiritual practice and now feel like you’re losing your sanity? Do others tell you something is wrong with you and yet you know something deeper is happening? You may be in the throes of a psycho-spiritual crisis or Spiritual Emergency. This talk is for anyone whose awakening has become a crisis or for anyone who knows someone like this. We will discuss what Spiritual Emergency is and why it happens, different types of Spiritual Emergency, and how to determine whether a set of “symptoms” should be treated as a Spiritual Emergency or as a psychological dysfunction. We will also talk about modalities for working with Spiritual Emergency, what kind of support you might need and more. A Spiritual Emergency can be a powerful initiation and a call to a more expanded life, and in this talk we discuss how to use such an event to facilitate powerful psycho-spiritual transformation.

Kevin Sachs PhD has been on a spiritual path for 38 years. He has a private practice in New York City where he offers ongoing personal and emotional support for people who do spiritual practice, support in preparing for and integrating deep, transformative inner experiences, and support for people undergoing psychospiritual crisis. Kevin is an advanced student of Holotropic Breathwork™ at Grof Transpersonal Training. He is also studying to certify as a Focusing Professional with Ann Weiser Cornell and Jane Bell and studies shamanism with Jan Edl Stein. He spent many years studying Siddha Yoga Meditation with Swami Muktananda and Gurumayi Chidvilasananda. Kevin offers individual sessions in New York City or by phone.

The Wheel Of Life With Walking Hawk

A Weekend of Introspection & Balance.  Through storytelling, journey and ceremony, we will learn about basic Native American medicine wheel teachings. As we explore the different aspects of the medicine wheel, we will gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the sacred present in all of life. Guidance will be given on how to deepen our connection to the Great Mystery, Wakan Tanka....We will also have the opportunity to participate in three inipi ceremonies: a healing lodge, a star lodge and a universal/cosmic lodge. The healing lodge will bring us back into balance and ‘right relation.’ The star lodge calls upon the wisdom and healing energy of our Wicahpi Oyate ancestors, the Star Nation Elders. The universal/cosmic lodge brings in the teachings and healings of the heavenly bodies of our solar system.

Please bring:  * Rattle and/or drum…along with your other objects of empowerment or ceremony * A crystal or stone* Warm Clothing * Heavy sleeping bag and tent for camping (communal space also available in rustic farmhouse) * Modest attire for sweat lodge--long skirt/dress for women & long shorts for men * Swimsuit & towel for the spring-fed pool and outdoor shower

His openness and insight have also brought him to many ceremonies and gatherings, both open and secret, throughout the nation and abroad.

Oral Histories of Christiania: Consensus, Conflict, & Catnip at ABC No Rio

Christiania is a squatted neighborhood of almost one thousand people in Copenhagen, Denmark. The residents have now occupied 85 acres of downtown land for almost 40 years: raising children, creating art, running businesses, building homes and making all of their decisions by consensus. Since the election of a conservative government in 2001, they have been under increasing pressure to legalize and “normalize” their community.  Almost every Christianite has a story to tell about the recent legalization process. One would expect them to describe the battles with police, the symbolic violence of being forced to number their homes and name their streets, or the ongoing courtroom conflict, and they do. But many of the most vivid stories center around the more private dramas of the internal decision-making process through which Christiania has developed responses to the various proposals of the Danish government. How has their use of consensus shaped their response to pressure from the state? Can consensus be strategic, or is it just an idealistic, holdover from Christiania’s hippie past? Amy Starecheski will engage these questions by sharing excerpts from her oral histories with Christianites. As Christiania's Researcher in Residence from May 13-21 2010, Brindalyn Webster spent her time collecting oral histories and definitions of normalization from Christianites, filming Christiania's landscape and planting a catnip forest for feral cats. At this event, she will be contributing a limited edition text based on conversations with Christianites. A copy of the multiple will be gifted to generous audience members who are willing to speak on its behalf.   Brindalyn Webster's work is based on narratives that arise from interactions with specific people, places and times. Between the years 2007 and 2009, Webster was fortunate enough to participate in California College of the Art’s Social Practice MFA Program. She was awarded a fellowship at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2009. More recently, Webster completed the Independent Study Program at Valand School of Fine Arts, in Gothenburg Sweden.   Amy Starecheski is an oral historian, former squatter, and doctoral student in cultural anthropology at the CUNY Graduate Center. She is currently working on a project to learn about the legalization and history of NYC squats. If you’re interested in participating, or for more information about this event, contact her at amy.starecheski@gmail.com or 718-402-1967.
