Harnessing Soul Force, Building Love
A new workshop by Rachel Mann, PhD. This event will be held at the Bridge Between the Worlds Retreat Center, Charlottesville, VA. Mohandas Gandhi coined the word satyagraha, translated as Soul Force. Soul Force is the power we draw on when we face our inner and outer challenges with courage, love and peace. In shamanic teachings, this is known as “power” or being in ayni, or right relationship with all things. It is the power of love. Join Rachel Mann in exploring how to harness Soul Force in yourself through the practices of Peruvian shamanism. Firekeeping, ritual, meditations on lovingkindness and, art will be part of this self-exploratory weekend. Rachel Mann, PhD is a shamanic healer trained in the energy medicine of the Q’ero people of the Peruvian Andes. Her experience and interest in shamanism and indigenous spirituality and healing reaches back 15 years. She is a an anthropologist and folklorist who teaches on the topics of the new shamanism in the West, Gandhi, and in the field of peace and violence studies. She has a private client healing practice in Charlottesville, VA and works as a consultant to organizations dealing with problems of violence. She publishes two occasional newsletters, Shamanism in a New Age and Explorations in Kindness. Her writings on shamanism, violence, peace, and spirituality have appeared in both scholarly and popular journals. rachel@mettaknowledge.com

Skillfully Navigating Your Awakening
With Kevin Sachs. Do you ever feel that your spiritual practice is making you crazier rather than more peaceful? Much of what we are taught about spiritual practices that they’re about feeling peaceful, relaxed and tranquil is wrong. Powerful spiritual practices bring up uncomfortable emotions like fear, anger and sadness. The point is not for us to get rid of these feelings so we can live in bliss. These things that emerge are our treasures exiled parts of ourselves that long to be welcomed home so we can become whole. In this talk, we will explore principles of working with the mind and emotions in the context of an ongoing spiritual practice. We will discuss why and how spiritual practices evoke feelings and emotions, what types of things might emerge and how to work with them, “spiritual bypassing,” death, rebirth and initiation, projection and transference, when to seek outside support, and more. Kevin Sachs PhD is the director of Safe Journeys Home, and has been on a spiritual path for 38 years. Kevin has a private practice in New York City where he offers ongoing psychological and emotional support for people who do spiritual practice, support in preparing for and integrating deep, transformative inner experiences, and support for people undergoing psychospiritual crisis. Kevin is an advanced student of Holotropic Breathwork™ at Grof Transpersonal Training. He is also studying to certify as an Inner Relationship Focusing Professional with Ann Weiser Cornell and Jane Bell and studies shamanism with Jan Edl Stein and Kenn Day. He spent many years studying Siddha Yoga Meditation with Swami Muktananda and Gurumayi Chidvilasananda.
Kevin offers individual sessions on an hourly basis.

The Transition Movement - The Emergence of Community Resilience
With Michael Brownlee, Transition Colorado. Please register by calling 908.362.6735. “We are entering an unavoidable period of energy descent,” states Michael Brownlee, co-founder of Transition Colorado in Boulder. The scientific consensus is that human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are already having a devastating impact on the ecosphere that supports all life, and this will get very much worse in the future. The Transition movement offers a way to live into the possibilities of this challenging time with both a vision for a new and more nourishing world, and a process for moving in this direction. Bring others from your community with you to hear this informative and inspirational talk by Michael Brownlee, who was instrumental in bringing the Transition movement to the United States from England. For more information on this event as well as on the Introduction to Transition weekend on September 16-19, visit our website at www.genesisfarm.org. As of the end of June, a third of the Introduction program spaces have been filled, so we suggest that you register as soon as possible if you are interested.

))Call for Stories((
CALL FOR STORIES - THE UNHEARD VOICES DOCUMENTARY PROJECT
The Unheard Voices documentary project is seeking interviews and testimonials from drug-related offenders and ex-offenders, and their families, on the far ranging consequences of their criminal convictions.
Inspired by Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Project, which gathered video testimonies from survivors and other witnesses to the Holocaust, the Unheard Voices documentary project is building an archive of testimonies on the cultural holocaust that has been the War on Drugs.
“No issue has had more impact on the criminal justice system in the past three decades than national drug policy. The ‘war on drugs,’ officially declared in the early 1980s, has been the primary contributor to the enormous growth of the prison system in the United States during the last quarter-century and has affected all aspects of the criminal justice system and, consequently, American society.” ~ The Sentencing Project, “A 25 Year Quagmire: The ‘War on Drugs’ and its Impact on American Society.” (2007)
If you or anyone in your family has had a criminal conviction for a nonviolent drug-related offense, we would like to hear about the lasting impacts to your lives, and how you overcame your circumstances, or were permanently affected. Your stories will help put a human face on a critical social issue that has been overwhelmed by fear, politics, racial prejudice, and intolerance, in an era where the public attitude has been, “out of sight, out of mind.” When the stories hit home, the policies begin to change.
We seek written testimonials and interview subjects for our video archive. If you would like your voice to be heard please contact Director Charles Shaw at charles.shaw@opendemocracy.net.
Unheard Voices is a collaborative venture of the Exile Nation Project, openDemocracy and the Tedworth Charitable Trust. Interviews & Testimonials will be initially published on the openDemocracy Drug Policy Forum.
