Hosted and Sponsored by Reality Sandwich, Souldish and Story Spiral

Why are psychedelics so brutally suppressed in our culture? What exactly are some of the psychedelic plants and chemicals and how can they benefit us? With philosophy and insight from Dennis McKenna, Daniel Pinchbeck, Alex Grey, and many others, this film is not to be missed by anyone interested in psychedelics and shamanism. Interviews include - Robert Bussinger, Mike Crowley, Timothy Freke, Peter Gandy, Alex Grey, Clark Heinrich, Nick Herbert, John Major Jenkins, Dennis McKenna, Terence McKenna, Daniel Pinchbeck, and Dr. Rick Strassman.

Then join filmmaker Andrew Rutajit, psychologist Dr. Neal Goldsmith and the Drug Policy Alliance’s Jag Davies (formerly of MAPS and the ACLU) for lively conversation between our special guest speakers and the audience. Expect to participate in thought provoking discussions.
The film, produced by Bouncing Bear Films and created by Andrew Rutajit, is the first in a series of three films discussing various aspects of shamanism and is a broad look at psychedelics in general. “Write Action” Writer’s Group at ID Project

Workshop for Meditators led by Meredith Arena.  The Interdependence Project Writing Group bridges our meditation and writing practices. Our methodology is to keep the pen moving — a conscious engagement with writing, simply and beautifully, as process. Practice teaches us to separate creator from editor and allows us to explore the raw, fecund nature our first thoughts and spontaneity without judgment or expectation.  Like meditation, our personal writing practice can serve as another means to explore our minds in an authentic, in-the-moment kind of way. Our meetings are a supportive forum for writers and meditators to explore their personal creative processes together. The monthly, two-hour sessions include sitting meditation, a variety of timed writing prompts and exercises and sharing our work.  All are welcome to this group, but we do hope to form a consistent group of participants as we move into the Fall. In order to present work for group critique a participant should have attended the group at least three times and sign up before hand by e-mailing Meredith. The group is open to writers of all genres and experience levels. People brand new to meditation are also welcome.  For much more info on this group, or to rsvp for the upcoming workshop, contact meredith@theidproject.org

The new labs are ready for us to make merry and craft! I haven’t been yet, but it sounds great. I’m so excited for our first Fall meeting. All the best reasons to craft converge right about now: colder (snuggly wool time), back to school (learn something new), and Halloween! Yes, it is time to plan your costume for the crafty holy of holies. No, it is not too soon.  I know Julie was threatening to get all the sewing machines serviced, so I think they will be there along with the usual compliment of scissors and such, be sure to bring what you need this time until we know more about what has made the move and what has stayed behind, supplies wise.

City of Dreams Mini Golf at Governers Island

It’s been a wonderful season for the City of Dreams Minigolf Course… with 18 holes (12 of them new for 2009) and tens of thousands of children and adults enjoying the course! We have one weekend to go… and then we need to de-install the course for the winter. So come out and play one last time this weekend, October 2-4.  Taking the minigolf course down (as well as the sculptures in the City of Dreams) is a big job, and we could really use some extra help on Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11 to help us take it all apart, put it away, and clean up the courtyard behind Liggett Hall.  help us de-install 10/10 and 10/11.  We’re also looking for volunteers to help to run the minigolf course on its last weekend, October 3-4.  To sign up to help, click here: http://figmentnyc.org/volunteer.

Osho Dynamic Meditation

Breathe, Release, Rechannel, Witness, Celebrate.  Presented by Osho NY.  Series of classes begin:  In a Safe Space we share this powerful method to start your day. During this hour long technique we use breath and body to release tension, stress and repressed emotions. This technique brings you back to your life energy by going through different blocks, that we call layers. Each layer that we face and peel away in this process starts to reveal the truth of who you really are. From this point you can begin to transform your daily life, bringing silence and celebration into any moment.  The technique consists of 5 stages: breathing, releasing, grounding, silence and celebration. Through these steps a joyous and relaxed balance is restored to body and mind and once the ground is prepared in this way meditation becomes easy and enjoyable. Dynamic Meditation is most effective when it is practiced in a 21 day format. For this month, for six days, we will dive deep into this technique. This revolutionary active meditation technique can transform your life.  Please arrive 10 minutes early to receive an introduction.  Pre-registration is suggested by phone or email.  If you are interested in participating call (718)399-1428 or email meditationsource@earthlink.net. Remaking Eden: Ecological Design as Spiritual Practice

October 16-24th, 2009 An Advanced Permaculture Design Course.  Most humans alive now, have grown up in cultures divorced from nature. This fundamental separation prevents conventional agricultural design from incorporating whole, self-regenerating ecosystems that also meet human needs. During this course we will explore how we can create food-producing ecosystems that work like healthy natural systems, with minimal maintenance, and diverse yields . and, how the practice of ecological design reveals a healthy relationship to nature and to spirit, teaching us how to see and act, with respect and humility. Using Sivananda Ashram as our design client, participant teams will undertake various design projects leading toward a master plan for the ashram property. We will also participate in the ashram schedule, and relate our experiences with meditation and Yoga to our work as designers. Join us as we explore and weave together questions and answers from the inner and outer landscapes through intense, hands-on practice of ecological design. Open to graduates of certified permaculture design courses, and others by special request. $600 + accommodations.

Psychotropia

Psychotropia will be taking place on September 24th, 2009 at Seed Gallery, which is located on 239 Washington St. in Newark, NJ. This awesome celebration of Seed’s two-year opening anniversary & psychotropic art exhibition is guaranteed to be one of our best yet. The theme of “psychotropia” reflects the mind, revealing its deeper nature and its infinite aspects of the psyche. The art that will be displayed from September 24th until October will be psychotropic in that it will bring our audience closer to their deeper mind. The content of the works are mind revealing and can be considered to express mystical states of consciousness, shamanic experiences, visionary states of the mind, etc. Our goal is to bring together an impressive array of artists, who’s art forms not only deliver quality in content and design but also act as a portal for spiritual exploration, inspiration, healing, and psychotropic research.  Claudia Lady Bird Johnson once said, “Art is the window to man’s soul. Without it, he would never be able to see beyond his immediate world; nor could the world see the man within.” Art is meant to elevate one’s understanding of himself and the world around him, instantaneously taking him/her into a higher level of consciousness. In “Psychotropia” we will be creating a unique and awe-inspiring environment that is meant to transcend the self beyond the beyond. Art works will vary from paintings to sculptures, to digital prints, collages, installations, animations, and much, much more. Imagine entering the gallery and stepping into an entirely different universe where one can explore multiple realities uncommon to day-to-day reality. Hues of bright and fluorescent tones intertwined in archaic myths with psychedelic gods and archetypal techno demons might be some of the themes displayed in some of the more expected pieces. But be prepared to also expect the unexpected.  Feedback installations with interactive devices and video projects might just melt your mind and blow you away. We are also expected to have synesthetic animations that vibrate trance evoking, audio frequencies and optical phenomenon so astonishing that you might never forget.  If you are inspired by eidetic imagery, visionary art, mandalas, sacred geometry and surrealism don’t hesitate to stop by for our opening night. This upcoming show’s artists will bring to you some of the most exciting aggregations that may resemble many of Carl Jung’s collective archetypes or the powerful hypnagogic states of a Tibetan Buddhist Monk.  Featured Artists:  Adam Scott Miller, Manuel Abor, Gizem Bacaz, Kaliptus, Jelani Gould- Bailey, Martin Cash, Samson Contompasis, Gregory Maxwell Dunn, Giorgio Vaselli, Greyegg, Dwell & OneUnit, E.S.P., Collyn Gold, Joe Hollander, David Marghieri, Krystal Mitchell, J.H. Please contact me first: http://dustandillusions.com/contact.  About the film: Dust & Illusions looks at 30 years of history of Burning Man all the way back to the late 1970s deep into the origins of the event. Through 21 interviewees the film presents the philosophies that fueled the creation of the festival, and its evolution from a small gathering of friends to the largest “counter-cultural” event in North America. It offers a new perspective of the meaning of the event, and questions whether its organizers are more concerned about making sure the show is ready when the gate opens or if they still truly engage in building a community and fostering art.

The Writer In The City: A Fiction-Writing Workshop with Henry Chang

Having trouble generating new material? Join Henry Chang, a New York Times-praised novelist and Chinatown native, for a ‘total immersion’ creative approach to voice, characterization, and setting. In this class, we will write at various locations throughout Chinatown, which will serve as sites of inspiration, incorporated in prompts, story brainstorms and various writing exercises to get your creative juices flowing. Be prepared to open up creative channels you didn’t realize existed while New York City’s Chinatown is your muse. Fiction writers, poets and nonfiction writers are welcome.  For writers of all levels and genres.  First class meets at Confucius Plaza (Bowery & Pell St.)  Henry Chang is the author of Chinatown Beat and The Year of the Dog. The Chicago Sun-Times called The Year of The Dog “a worthy debut” and praised Chang’s ability to write “with stark power and authority, covering the territory as only an insider can. He evokes the spirit, sights, smells and language of his setting in compelling fashion.” Chang’s follow-up, Chinatown Beat, is a novel with a “cool, measured style” that … “should make the locals sit up and gasp” (New York Times Book Review).

===Ongoing in October===

Miller, Luis Monteagudo, Teofilo Olivery, Anibal Padilla, Radical, Syd Strangelove, Jon Scribles, Parker Wolf, Aeres Vistaas, Polina Zaitseva, Duke Papi, Vanessa Ramalho.  Group Show, Curator: Kaliptus & Gizem Bacaz
