Presentation & Discussion - The Transition movement

No one really knows what the future will be, but we all think about it. In the face of fossil fuel depletion, climate change, and economic instability, how can we address these issues to shape a society that can adapt? Many people face this scenario with fear or even denial, but there is another alternative that has been developing over the last several years as a global grassroots movement—one that acknowledges the seriousness and complexity of the issues faced, while also offering an alternative that engages the creative genius of our local communities.

Known as The Transition Movement, it explores transitioning from an oil-centric economy to one in which our community systems are localized to ensure greater resilience in the face of peak oil, climate change, and economic instability. Kim Latham and Jim Fiola, Co-Initiators of Transition Newton, will be speaking about what is happening in the Transition Movement within our local region.

Opening Reception for The Sacred Masculine and the Divine Feminine—A Visual Dialogue by Kathleen Ruel

Pachakuti Series I and II is a visual dialogue and expression exploring the Sacred Masculine and the Divine Feminine in relation to the notion of Pachakuti. Translating as “turn of the world and of the times”, the term Pachakuti was originally used by the Inca to indicate the end of a 500 year cycle and the beginning of a new one.  This series, based on Pachakuti mesa altars, reflects shadows, healings, gifts, and shifts of a present-day Pachakuti.  Ruel’s mosaics utilize a combination of recycled glass, travertine, agate slices and marble (some of which include fossils) from Italy, Spain, France, Brazil, Mexico and the United States.  Intuitive in process, the conceptual work revealed itself to be a coming into balance with the Sacred Masculine and the Divine Feminine, both within ourselves and in relation to other.

Ecovillage Movement NYC Presents:  Community as a Path to New Social Structures and Sustainability

A discussion on the significance of creating intentional and sustainable communities.  Joining us will be:  Steve Gaarder, founding resident of the Ithaca Ecovillage.  As a young man, he lived in various cooperative houses, and at age 25 set a 5-year goal of being part of an intentional community. He and his wife, Suzanne Kates, got involved with Ecovillage at Ithaca NY in 1991 and spent the next 5-plus years planning and building. They have been living there ever since. Steve has developed a fascination with the connection between the design of spaces and how people are moved to behave in them.  Susan Grossman, founding member of the Ganas Community, Staten Island, NY.  Susan grew up in Jersey City NJ and was looking for a way to live an alternative lifestyle since high school. In 1977 she met some friends in San Francisco CA and together they moved to New York and founded the Ganas community in 1980. Their idea, which is still operating, was to live with a self selected extended family, learning how to work out the problems that arise when more than a few are sharing resources.  Michael Johnson, founding member of the Ganas Community, Staten Island, NY.  Michael was deeply involved in group dynamics and community organizing in NYC between 1968-’73. He was member of the desegregation unit of Austin school system between 1976-’80. He co-founded the intentional community Ganas in Staten Island, NY in 1980, in part an experiential research center in democratic culture and is still there 30 years later. He has also been active in the worker co-op and solidarity economy movements since 2007 with the Valley Alliance of Worker Co-operatives (New England), GEO, and Solidarity NYC.  Also, sharing their experiences:  Aviva Bezilla, from Argentina, who lived for 7 years at the East Wind Community
and Leslie Greenwood, who has lived at the Twin Oaks Intentional Community. Energy Medicine Workshop:  The Basics of Bioenergetics

Join Reiki Master and Evolver co-founder Jonathan Talat Phillips on an evening journey through the ancient art of energy healing.  In this workshop, we will learn the five primary personality types and energetic defense structures that Bioenergetic therapy uses to help clients unleash their innate health, happiness, and personal power. The names for these character types have the provocative titles of “schizoid,” “oral,” “masochist,” “psychopath,” and “rigid.” According to Bioenergetics, we develop different levels of these protective systems in our childhood to prevent us from being overwhelmed by difficult experiences, but these defenses crystallize into our energetic field, trapping us in unhelpful behaviors and thought patterns, leading to longer term mental, emotional, and physical dis-ease. In this energy medicine workshop, we will learn the physical characteristics, psychological defenses, life tasks, and many gifts of each of the five personality types. Participants will discover their primary defense structures and learn energy healing modalities to release these old patterns and constrictive forces.  We will also explore techniques for working with other people’s personality defenses, which can prove helpful in any social situation.   This workshop will provide a safe container for participants to go deeper into their own healing journey. Anyone can learn to heal with energy, and all levels are welcome, whether you are a beginner just starting out or an advanced practitioner honing your art.  Join us as we learn, share, and open up new dimensions of the heart.

Jonathan Talat is a certified Chi and Bioenergetic healer from the Connecticut Healing Institute.  He has a private practice in NYC and does Skype sessions.
