Occult America: a talk by Mitch Horowitz

Presented by phantasmaphile:  from its earliest days, america has been a laboratory for new or unusual religious ideas – particularly of an occult or esoteric bent. From the spirit medium who became the nation’s first female religious leader in 1776 and the placement of the mysterious eye-and-pyramid on the back of our dollar bill, to the growth of the african-american magical system of hoodoo and the uses of mind-power mysticism among political reformers (including back-nationalist hero marcus garvey), the united states has been one nation under many gods. Mitch horowitz, the author of occult america: the secret history of how mysticism shaped our nation, will explore the people, ideas, and episodes that gave america its unusual religious character and show how magical and esoteric religious ideas have shaped so many aspects of our culture, politics, and lives.  Mitch horowitz is the editor-in-chief of tarcher/penguin and the author of occult america: the secret history of how mysticism shaped our nation (bantam).

Spin Spin Presents: 12/4 Phish After Party Lot Style w. DJ Nutritious vs. VJ Mamiko Kushida

For those of you who just love Phish Phans, you can party down with them with friends thanks to Zoe and Mike.  Four blocks from MSG.  We know there will be countless other after parties at venues around town at the midnight hour on Friday 12/4… But we bought out this huge bar/lounge called Stitch so we could throw a “lot” style rager only 4 short blocks from MSG.  We know and love many of you, and we know that no other live band is going to compare to an epic three night Phish run at MSG.  So we decided to fix all of that by throwing Phish fan favorite, NYC’s own DJ Nutritious on the turntables, spinning anything and everything groovy while his Kyoto counterpart vj Mamiko Kushida rocks psychedelic visuals on the giant screen and the tellies.  Stitch provides a munchy menu (including veggie burritos), a fully stocked bar, and plenty of brews on tap. (We’ve also got some free raw bars from Raw Revolution.)  $5 bucks. No door policy. No hassle. No dress code. (And, um, real drink prices, no $10 beer bullshit) Come Slip Stitch  and Pass the fuck out.  *A Great Time Is Mandatory*

Filthy Lucre: A Burlesque Christmas Carol

Burlesque Collective Pinchbottom re-imagines Dickens’ classic tale with a bit more spice. This sexy update remains faithful to the original text while tweaking a few details. For one, scrooge (nasty canasta) is now a woman who runs a strip club and, accordingly, there’s a lot more nudity. For those wanting pure dickens and naked girls, pinchbottom also offers a reading of A Christmas Carol by nasty and other beauties.  – Review written by: Chris Kompanek

BLESSED ARE THE JOBLESS!  BLESSED ARE THE  BROKE

As American unemployment hit the double digits in November, the highest in over 25 years, Reverend Billy Talen has a message of peace on earth and peace of mind for Brooklynites facing the holidays amid financial uncertainty.  “You don’t have to buy a gift to give a gift” says Talen, of the church of life after shopping. “Consumerism enforces a bizzaro-world morality around the holidays, where we don’t feel guilty for indulging but instead feel guilty for not indulging and spending enough! We’re telling Brooklyn: you can have a guilt-free, debt-free Christmas this year. Don’t charge Christmas on the credit card, save Christmas by spending time with your family and community.”  New Yorkers can tap into the holiday spirit of buylessness by joining Reverend Billy and his 40 voice, life after shopping gospel choir at the Brooklyn lyceum on Saturday December 12, 2009 at 8pm.  Tickets are a sensible $10.00. As often the case with church of life after shopping “fabulous worships”, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. The rev notes that “we’re 1/5th the price of the Rockettes, twice the fun, and the choir is ten times sexier!”

Satan And Santa: Separated At Birth?

How the lord of misrule became a bourgeois tool (and still managed to enrage the religious right) an illustrated lecture with cult author and cultural critic mark dery

lecture, followed by an observatory holiday party, complete with lovely alcoholic beverages, themed snacks, and live music as performed by brooklyn’s own ruprecht and the birch switches, who will perform  your favorite krumpus carols.

Few americans know that santa descends from the mock king who held court at saturnalia, the roman festival celebrating the winter solstice. Or that he shares cultural dna with the lord of misrule who presided over the yuletide feast of fools in the middle ages—lewd, blasphemous revels that gave vent to underclass hostility toward feudal lords and the all-powerful church.  By the late 19th century, christmas in manhattan was an excuse for the rabble to go wilding from door to door in upper-class neighborhoods, demanding booze and cash from terrified householders in exchange for an off-key (and sometimes off-color) yuletide song. In desperation, washington irving, clement clarke moore, and other members of new york’s cultural elite invented santa claus—and christmas as we know it—as a means of domesticating the drunken revels of the dangerous classes. Their bourgeois myth was designed to channel lumpen unrest into a more acceptable outlet: a domestic ritual consecrated to home, hearth, and conspicuous consumption.  In satan and santa: separated at birth?, Dery, a cultural critic and book author, takes a look at the jolly old elf’s little-known role as poster boy for officially sanctioned eruptions of social chaos, as well as his current status as a flashpoint in “the christmas wars”—cultural battles between evangelicals, atheists, conservatives, and anti-consumerists over the “true” meaning of christmas. Along the way, dery considers new age theories that santa is a repressed memory of an ancient celtic cult revolving around red-capped psychedelic mushrooms; nazi attempts to re-imagine christmas—a holiday consecrated to a jewish baby, for christ’s sake—as a pre-christian invention of tree-worshipping german tribes, in some misty, wagnerian past; and the suspicious similarities between satan and santa, connections that have fueled a cottage industry of conspiracy theories on the religious right.  Bio: mark dery (markdery at verizon dot net) is a cultural critic whose byline has appeared in publications ranging from the new york times magazine to rolling stone to salon to cabinet, and whose lectures have taken him to australia to austria, belgium  to brazil, macedonia to mexico, germany to the gowanus canal. He has been a professor in the department of journalism at new york university, a chancellor’s distinguished fellow at uc irvine, and a visiting scholar at the american academy in rome.  Dery is best known for his writings on the politics of popular culture in books such as the pyrotechnic insanitarium: american culture on the brink and escape velocity: cyberculture at the end of the century.  He is widely associated with the concept of “culture jamming,” the guerrilla media criticism movement he popularized through his 1993 essay “culture jamming: hacking, slashing, and sniping in the empire of the signs,” and “afrofuturism,” a concept he introduced in his 1994 essay “black to the future” (included in the anthology flame wars: the discourse of cyberculture, which he edited).

Freshkills Park Talks: Sustainability in Practice

Eli Cohen, of Israel’s Ayala Water & Ecology , designs naturally-based solutions to help remove pollutants and contaminants from soil, air and bodies of water and to rebuild ecosystems’ capacity for self-sustainability.  Mr. Cohen has consulted on stream rehabilitation projects, gray water reuse systems and numerous constructed wetland systems to remove heavy metals, salts, hydrocarbons and pathogens from agricultural, industrial and landfill sites.  Key within this work has been his involvement in the remediation of the Hiriya landfill in Tel-Aviv, formerly Israel’s largest landfill and soon to become part of Park Ariel Sharon, a 2000-acre park that shares a number of parallels with Freshkills Park.  Mr. Cohen will present a variety of innovative projects implemented in Israel and around the world, with emphasis on urban solutions.

Meditation and Buddhism Gathering with Ethan Nichtern

Sponsored by The Interdependence Project.  Unfortunately, the Buddha never taught a sutra called ‘How to Practice Compassion in The Age of Multinational Capitalism.’ No ancient Indian meditator tried to be mindful while sending a text message. No nun in a Tibetan monastery had to learn loving-kindness while being bombarded 24/7 by ads constructed to undermine her self-esteem. But if we want to understand the relevance of Buddhism here and now, then we have to learn how to do all of these things.  Everyone Welcome Regardless of Experience.  Meditation Instruction is part of each class.

The Way of the Mystic — Medieval Mystics: Meister Eckhart, St. Francis, Rumi

This is an individual class in a lecture series. To sign up for the full series, see The Way of the Mystic.  With Jon Mundy, PhD.  What is Mysticism? What are mystical experiences and under what circumstances do they occur? In this three-week series, Jon Mundy, who has spent 40 years teaching courses on religion and has a passionate interest in this topic, will identify many characteristics shared by nearly all mystical episodes, including: ineffability, the loss of subject/object identity, timelessness, egolessness and experiences of wonder, awe, reverence, freedom, happiness and bliss. Over the course of these three evenings, he will delve into the lives, experiences and teachings of a number of the history’s greatest mystics and also, most importantly, describe meditative and other practices that can lead to the exalted states they describe.

Autumn is here and the holiday season will be upon us before you can say, “Bah Humbug!”  Keep yourself healthy throughout the cold season by incorporating fermented foods and hearty lifefood soups into your diet.  Fermented foods are tasty and provide vital support to the immune system, promoting good digestion and colon health, while enhancing your tolerance to weather changes and pollution.  Lifefood soup ingredients may be selected from a wide range of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, nuts/seeds and sea vegetables in delicious combinations which can be warmed to a maximum of 120F.  Savor the culinary creations of Raw Food Chefs Shenaqua Sookhoo-Jones and Andrew Jones and learn how you can prepare these delicious, nutrient-dense recipes.  You’ll gain a deeper understanding of the key elements to maintaining health and vitality, and be able to prepare and sample a mild kimchee-like fermented vegetable dish and a raw butternut/ginger soup to warm the cockles of your heart and tummy.  Shenaqua Sookhoo-Jones had an international upbringing, exposing her to Indian, Cajun, French, and Chinese culinary traditions.  She has transferred her knowledge of and passion for healthy and delicious food to the preparation of raw and living foods as part of her own healing journey.  She takes great pleasure in sharing the culinary good news.  Andrew Jones is a world-class permaculture teacher and educator and has pursued an eclectic career encompassing ecology, humanitarian aid/development, holistic health, life foods, and sustainable business.  RSVP required to jayagusti8@yahoo.com with your phone number.  Earlybird Special - $20 prepaid by check or $20 cash at the door if you bring a buddy.  Single walk ins pay $25.  Send checks, received no later than 12/07, payable to: Gusti Bogok, Old Chelsea Station, P.O. Portraying the Self Workshop w/ Alex & Allyson Grey

Few pictures through the ages are more honest or experimental than self portraits. Self portraiture can nobly and expressively convey the deepest feelings with sincerity. The mirror enables an artist to capture their most personal view of reality. The degree of comfort with which self portraits capture physical features, environmental conditions and the artist’s inner world can leave a faithful record of self scrutiny through the creative process. Facing ones moods, expressions and shadow, the artist can go beyond likeness and represent inner turmoil, inner spirit, and higher possibility.  This workshop will allow the exploration of various mediums, examine the history of self-portraiture, offer immersion into the soul through self-revelation, and address philosophically the nature of the self.  Course fee: $250.  Materials list will be provided upon registration.  Workshop begins Friday evening with arrivals from 5-7, dinner and then lecture. Saturday workshop hours go from 10am - 10pm and Sunday from 10 am- 1pm. Food is included in course fee.  Limited accommodations available.
