Sonic Refuge
Sharon Gannon, singer, violinist, yogini and co-founder of the world renowned Jivamuki Yoga Method, has released her debut album, titled Sharanam. Produced and arranged by Parisian, Ferenz Kallos (Gypsy Kings, Mercedes Bahleda) it showcases mantras sung by Sharon. Whether you’re a club DJ, yoga practitioner or just your average Joe these blissful beats are bound to get you in a great state of mind. “I wanted to make an album, which featured Sanskrit mantras but I also didn’t want to use Indian instruments or raga structure,” says Sharon.
Special guests include David Life on vocals & Theremin; trance DJ Fabian Asultany on bass and cellist Noah Hoffeld (Bebel Gilberto, Mark Ribot). Her first solo attempt in the studio includes three versions of the beloved mantra “Lokah Samastah Sukinoh Bhavantu,” along with the tracks “Govinda Fly” & “Hare Krishna.”
Sharanam is Sanskrit for “a safe place” or “to take refuge.” Recorded in the wild forest sanctuary of Woodstock, NY her album is filled with the sacred power of music. Her goal is to reconnect the listener with nature and the divine.
“When one tries to describe music,” Sharon states, “it is like trying to describe yoga, it isn’t possible because music defies words. It is feeling. And to feel you must be able to shut up and listen and that is also what you must do with yoga.”
For Sharon music and yoga are forever connected like the Hindu gods and their consorts: Brahma & Saraswati, Vishnu & Laxmi or Shiva & Parvati. They’re comparable to the dualistic male & female energies necessary to sustain the universe.
“Music is the first art. Everything – all that is manifest proceeds from sound.”
