Sit Down, Rise Up

The Theatre Research Ensemble, a group of socially-conscious performers sponsored by New York City's Interdependence Project, kicked off their new “InterActs” series by practicing sitting and walking meditation in a Port Authority subway tunnel.

The first of four Public Meditation sessions to be held this spring, the events aim to “awaken our audiences' imaginations about what meditation can be and the benefits of beginning a regular practice,” said Josh Adler, Director of Arts and Communications for the Interdependence Project.

Every month, a group of meditators will meet in different locations in Manhattan and connect their awareness to issues in the community. The issues will be expressed as scenes of contemplation intent on encouraging conversation and creative prosperity among both participants and witnesses.

“We're trying to combine meditation, arts and activism, which is the full scope of the Interdependence Project,” Adler said.

Last November, the IDP held a 24-hour Meditation Marathon in the display windows of ABC Carpet & Home on Broadway to the surprise of many passers-by.

Mind Guerillas...

We're playing those Mind Games together
Pushing the barriers... planting seeds
Playing the mind guerrilla
Chanting the mantra.. Peace on Earth
We all been playing those mind games forever
Some kinda druid dudes... lifting the veil
Doing the mind guerrilla
Some call it Magic, the search for the Grail

Love is the answer and you know that for sure
Love is a flower, you got to let it.. you got to let it grow

So keep on playing those mind games together
Faith in the future, outta the now
You just can't beat on those mind guerrillas
Absolute elsewhere in the Stones of your Mind
Yeah we're playing those mind games forever
Projecting our images in Space and in Time

Yes is the answer and you know that for sure
Yes is surrender, you got to let it.. you got to let it go

So keep on playing those mind games together
Doing the Ritual.... Dance in the Sun
Millions of mind guerrillas
Putting their soul power to the Karmic Wheel
Keep on playing those mind games forever
Raising the spirit of Peace and Love

Love...(make Love not war, I know you've heard it before)

I'm not sure how I feel

I'm not sure how I feel about turning meditation into a public spectacle. It seems like somewhat of a perversion to take what is supposed to be an internal experience, and then use the imagery of a person having that experience (or at least TRYING to have that experience) as some sort of socio/political/artistic message.

It reminds me of something I read from a survivor of the Hare Krishna cult; they said that nothing was more alienating, both to practicioners and the public, than chanting sanskrit mantras on a public street corner.

not sure either

I'm not sure how I feel about it either.  It seems a bit contrived, and a bit on the Spiritual Materrialist side.  Meditation is the answer - the key to evolving consciousness, but I feel that by making a "spectacle" of it, it's sort of just turning it into another comodity.  The old school folks must be rolling their eyes and rolling over in their graves over this.  On the other hand - maybe it will inspire some to get interested in meditation.  And if it's of benefit to others then it's all good.

Very cool

Nice to see research being done suggesting that group meditation can reduce violence in the surrounding area. Can group meditation bring World Peace? Quantum Physicist John Hagelin explains

This does intuitively make sense as well.I think that if enough people believe or understand it to be true - that their inner state or resonance can affect the behaviour of others around them and then cultivate this peacefulness throughout their day as well as in prayer or group meditation or intention there could well be a exponential rise in global peace, and this seems to be what science is showing us.
