Silk Sensors

worms-200.jpg

Researchers at Tufts University are developing bio-active optical sensors made of silk that could warn of biological hazards and save lives.  The silk sensors are biodegradable, safe, and edible.  They are being bio-engineered to change color upon detecting various substances, such as E.coli in a bag of spinach, or toxins in a polluted river.  The life-saving possibilities are promising.

possibilities!

My husband made some biological weapons detectors and they had all kinds of chemicals to detect harmful bioweapons in the air. If they could just use silk instead, well, better for everyone!
