Downing goes on to speak about the glaring double-standard between street gangs and corporate “gangs”, conscious/ independent hip-hop music vs. corporate hip-hop, and the record label’s attempts to keep the community’s consciousness imprisoned by allowing “false economic pressures and opportunities [to] create one form of hip-hop over another.”
