The Roots of Our Gnostalgia

NHCodices-1.jpg

Having posted twice on Reality Sandwich about the noosphere, I sense the need to pause and assess the Gnostic perspective that keeps coming up in this context.

The Gnostics were sophisticated seers who belonged to a millennial pagan tradition that was brutally suppressed at the rise of Christianity. Almost no direct evidence of their views survived until the discovery of papyrus books at Nag Hammadi in 1945. But even these texts do not present a clear and consistent version of Gnostic thought. On metahistory.org and in my book Not in His Image, I have tried to restore what I consider to be genuinely Pagan, pre-Christian elements of Gnosticism. I do not claim to present the only valid version of Gnostic thought. I present a reconstruction of Sethian-Ophite teachings on the Divine Sophia, teachings marked by stringent anti-Christian, anti-salvationist elements.

I am not the only one fascinated by Gnosticism, of course. There is huge traffic on this topic on the Net, including such sites as palmtreegarden.org. Gnostic revivalist groups have existed for over a century, and more are forming continually across the world. The Da Vinci Code introduced the mainstream to Gnostic views, but in a misleading way. Spinning off the expose of the Priory of Sion conspiracy in Holy Blood, Holy Grail (1986), The DVC pointed to Gnostic texts to support the story that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had children who founded the blood-line of European theocracy, starting with the Merovingians around 450 CE. Although one Gnostic text, the Gospel of Philip, presents a cameo of a presumed Jesus kissing Mary Magdalene, Gnostic materials do not support a theocratic agenda. Gnostics rejected procreation and defied the master plan of a paternal father god.

But this is ancient news. Searching for lost truth can blind us to the truth staring us in the face - right under our gnoses, you could say. Can Gnostalgia - looking back at what such mystics thought in a bygone time and setting - offer a viable spiritual orientation for our time? Why we are so compelled to delve into what the Gnostics thought? Who cares what they thought?

Responses to my previous post, "The Trap of Simulation," raise the tricky subject of "anti-cosmism." This is scholar's jargon for the presumed Gnostic view that matter is evil, the product of an inferior deity, and the human soul is a "divine spark" imprisoned in a mortal carcass. In this view, the aim of spirituality is to free the soul from material confinement so that it can return to a disembodied state in the Pleroma, the realm of the gods. In Gnostic-Christian syncretism, Jesus Christ is the central agent in this redemptive drama of escapism.

I say "presumed" view because an increasing number of scholars now regard Gnostic anti-cosmism as disinformation, and seriously wrong. This is not what the pagan mystics thought, but what was attributed to them by their Christian adversaries, themselves known for their hatred of this world, their fear of nature, and their loathing of the female sex. In other words, Gnostic rejection of the body and the sensuous world is a projection of misogynist world-hatred originating with the Church Fathers who condemned the pagan visionaries as heretics, and strove to eliminate them. Which they did, almost without a trace.

But this is not even ancient news. It is tedious modern comment on ancient news. And again, I have to ask: Who cares what happened to the Gnostics? Why does it matter to us today?

Most readers of Reality Sandwich will have their own opinion about why Gnostic views are of value today. To me, the significance of Gnosticism for our time might be determined by how we regard two issues: the alleged "capture of the divine spark," and the role of Sophia, the fallen goddess in Gnostic creation myth. If the capture of the divine spark in material darkness was not the main concern of the Gnostic seers, what was? I maintain that they warned us, not of a divine essence trapped in matter, but of the spark of divine intelligence (nous, root of the word noosphere) that can be deviated by simulation, the subterfuge of mind parasites called Archons. This is relevant to our world because IT and cybernetics resemble Hal, Archotic simulation. If the Gnostics were on the right track, the virtual technologies we invent can deviate us from the realization of our own minds.

Hal can also be a potent tool for political deception and mind control. The online movie Zeitgeist explains that mock attack exercises ("a live-fly hijack drill") involving the insertion of false radar blips were being carried out at the moment of the 9/11 attacks. NORAD had over 20 alerts to respond to, and no way to tell the real attacks from simulated ones. The movie also alleges that in London anti-terrorist teams were staging simulated attacks in the same stations at the same times as the July 7 tube bombings.

Gnostalgia – looking back to what Gnostics thought – could be a valuable exercise. But it depends on how we see what they thought; even more so, on how we reconstruct and apply it. I maintain that the capture of the divine spark scenario is not only inaccurate regarding what pagan Gnostics thought, but harmful to modern spirituality, because it endorses escapism and fosters a false, narcissistic sense of human divinity. If the real problem we face is simulation, losing our minds to our own models and inventions, then concern about the capture of the divine spark merely confuses the issue, and the Gnostic warning goes unheeded. An essential correction has to be made before we can recognize the Gnostic message about nous, and advance to a better understanding of our cosmic role as a species. The advance comes with participation in the evolutionary designs of Sophia, the goddess who morphed into the earth. We are given nous by the gods (the Pleromic Aeons, in Gnostic terminology) so that we can participate in their activities and co-evolve with them, not so that we can become gods. We co-evolve as humans in a divinely originated and guided process. Mythopoetically speaking, we are expressions and instruments of deific imagination.

Credence in the capture of the divine spark scenario suggests a notion of human divinity which, personally, I find to be delusional, no matter how you cut it. My experience in experimental mysticism (with and without entheogens) has showed me that I come closest to the Divine when I am egoless, selfless, surrendered to ecstatic knowing of the Other, without a permanent essence to liberate. The mind in naked awareness of its source is self-liberating, Dzogchen says. This is consistent with Gnostic teachings and disciplined entheogenic practice. There is no license to play god or presume a god-like status for humanity in the Mystery teachings that I have painstakingly retrieved and restored. Egodeath and selfless immersion in nature are the dual signature of Pagan initiation, not inflation and escapism.

Gnostalgia immerses us in the murk of old theological quandaries full of contradictions, stated in corrupt syntax. The viable path of Gnosis for today leads to knowing Gaia, because Gaia, the name we give to the living intelligence of the earth, is identical with Sophia, the fallen goddess of Gnostic mythology. Rather than indulge in Gnostalgia, how can we enter the co-evolutionary path blazed by those ancient seers? Rather than bicker about what Gnostics said, when do we begin to practice our own Gnosis? It's a question those of us who are seriously attracted to Gnosticism all have to face, sooner or later.

Out-of-body experience recreated

John, I just finished reading 'Not in His Image,' which I thought was incredibly interesting. Thank you for bringing such insights to light. Then this morning I found this, which I thought is particularly relevant to your thoughts on technology deviating us. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6960612.stm Regards Alex

How Archons Con

Alex, Good to know that someone actually got all the way through the book!!
Fascinating article, close to some of my comments on the simulation tactics of the Archons. The First Apocalypse of James (NHL V, 3) says of the Archons, "they take away souls by theft." (An article, "A Gnostic Catechism," on metahistory.org, deals with the complete passage.)
In my explorations of the ET/Archon correlation, I have argued that abductions involving teleportation might be effectuated by the virtual reality trick described in this article: "to con the brain into thinking the body was located elsewhere."
In effect, what the scientists are doing here is a simulation of a simulation! This experiment suggests how the ET/Archons con people into believing they have been abducted, taken aboard a spacecraft, etc.  I find this explanation epistemologically convincing.  It enables us to know how the Archons operate, and yet see through their subterfuge (The Oz factor). At the same time, it inspires a healthy respect for the extent of their VR technology (Hal), which is more advanced than ours.  The Gnostic myth of Sophia states that we are provided with "the luminous epinioa," the power of imagination, to resist and dispel the simulating magic of the Archons.

go figure

In all that time I spent in Catholic school, they mentioned the Gnostics once. That was to say that the Gnostics believed that Jesus was the son of God, but 100% human. The reason my religion textbooks mentioned this was to clarify, I suppose, that Jesus was 100% god. Then my textbook seemed to suggest that the Gnostics were simply excommunicated (not executed). Oh my!

I've always held a slight interest in Gnostic texts, after hearing about the gospels that "Christianity doesn't want you to know about" like those of Thomas and Judas. However, these are just the semblances of Gnosticism that I've picked up through every day living. Now I am interested in some thoughtful research. Thanks for the informative articles hear on RS!

I'll be honest John, the

I'll be honest John, the first half was like pushing a boulder up a hill. But the second half was like a free fall, it really opened up to me, or I opened up to it I suppose, got in sync with the ideas, I was not conscious of before.

I'm not sure I'm completely in understanding of you 'do unto others' & 'do not unto others' theory. If you could direct me to relevant articles to read more, would be appreciated.

Sophia

I dont see how Sophia in the ancients view was identical with Gaia or 'morphed' into the earth as opposed to, say, her Fall being actually into the solar system, or the Galaxy, or the universe.

Dreaming Sophia

John Munter: This is an imaginative participatory game - or rite, if you prefer. If you're going take the time to complain, why don't you contribute as well?

Okay, we're informed about what you don't see, but what about what you do see? How do you see "the Sophia of the ancients"? Give us an image, a phrase. It would appear that you more readily imagine a "Fall" into the solar system, etc. How do you see this event? Give us a clue.

Bear in mind that I am not claming on my own invention that the Aeon Sophia, described in Gnostic texts as a female-gendered divinity in the Pleroma, morphs into the earth. We have an explicit textual account of that mythic/cosmological event, for what it's worth. Irenaeus, Against Heresies,  Book IV. This event is also hinted in some NHC writings, such as a Valentinian Exposition

If the Gaia-Sophia correlation doesn't work for you, can you say something about how you see Gaia and how you see Sophia and why, in your imagination, the two don't fit together.

You are welcome to dissent from the mythic framework of the Sophianic vision, as I've proposed it, and in dissenting, you may even contribute to developing the myth.... but contribute you must. "Put up or shut up," as the old saying goes. Otherwise you just stall the synergy.

Sophia

JLL: Thanks for the textual reference. Thats kind of what I was looking for. If I was going to criticize I would have tried a little harder! I may do that later, but this is a difficult area to address and I was just trying to pull you out a little bit. leaving aside the earth-gaia-sophia relationship for the moment, lets go to the archons--the reptilian and grey types we both see described. In what context can we view them? In my mind, they inhabit the Galaxy--and within the larger context of Sophia. I can see Sophia 'stepped down' in the earth but it seems to me the seers had a fairly large scale drama going. I feel uncomfortable addressing this issue but plunging ahead anyway and welcome any comments you might have.

Sophianic Drama

Yes, it is a difficult area to address. I don't propose the Gaia-Sophia correlation lighty, or expect anyone to swallow it as an article of faith. It seems true, however, that the myth is understood by empathic participation, rather than conceptually. Well, such is myth!

As for the Archons. This aspect of the Gnostic myth of Sophia has gotten a preponderant amount of attention since, and well before, my book came out. I am more than a little wary of letting that aspect of the myth dominate attention. On the other hand, if it is that subject that engages people with the story, so be it.

You will find extensive writings on the Archons on metahistory.org. Use the Archon/ET navigator in the box on the home page. At the end of the day, I regard the Archons as both cyborgs existing in the soolar system and mind parasites or figments of our own mental makeup. Some people will prefer to skip the cyborg stuff and see them exclusively as mental phantoms we produce. Others who have had close encounters will prefer the cyborg interpretation. So it goes...

Indeed, the Gnostic seers were engaged in a scenario of vast scope, the Sophianic Drama, if you will. I don't find this hard to accept because my experience with entheogenic practices, and the reports of many other people, support the idea that systematic and long-term observations made in altered states would lead to such a large-scale scenario. Today we are just coming around to the notion that entheogens can be used for systematic and verifiable investigation of the cosmos at large. That is precisely what the telestai in the Mysteries did, drawing upon a shamanic legacy going back to Paleolithic times - so it looks to me.

Galactic Drama

JLL--The Nag Hammadi material is extremely difficult and you have made fabulous advances and I am very grateful for it. Its kind of ridiculous that more mainline commentators don't admit "o my God, he is right!" I have seen your web site. I appreciate you empathic-conceptual reference. Sorr, I havent read your book. Let me push a conceptual framework a little farther out. Here is an framework I feel is worthy of your consideration. The sophia-logos drama is an exploration of Immanence and Transcendence (female and male) within our Galaxy. How far can divine immanence go in exulting and totally losing itself within itself? Can divine transcendance find immanence and relationally bring it into alignment and relationship with the One? From material coming through David Wilcock, I got the idea that the template of exploration for our galaxy is the human or humanoid form. The first evolution was the lion-type consciousness thought of as male but had a totally immanent-type conssciousness--the glory of one who has no peer and everything around him is his playground (like the narcissism of O.J.!). The lion may have been multiple in form but is represented in singularity because of its 'pod' consciousness. The next evolution--say the greys--was that in a female relationship to the lion, but where they did not experience the glory of immanence in themselves--but only the transcendant presence of the Lion. So, here we have the immanence and transcendance explored to the nth degree in relationship but in isolation empathicly from each other. The next iteration of this male-female dynamic was, perhaps, beings from the Sirius star system who incarnated male and female and had a balance between them. From Sumer we know they were matrilineal on the one hand but the males seemed to take a leading role though they had a conciliar format as well. In homo sapiens sapiens we have the wild working out of the double helix with many short incarnations of both male and female going back and forth working out the perfect balance within one being of the glory of matter as an expression of the One--the ultimate and perfect expression of our galaxy. The double helix, in turn, is one exploration of the archetypal string from string theory which composes all matter in this universe. The string has been conceptualized as a small loop like a rubber band by modern scientists. However The Dogon tribes mythology describes it as a spiral! This is from the book The Science of the Dogon by Laird Scranton who proves that the Dogons, who were originally an e.t. cult in pre-dynastic Egypt, encapsulate encyclopedic knowledge in their mythos of the water cycle, human sexuality, String Theory, and the four forces making up our universe (strong force, weak force, gravity, electromagnetic force). There is still room to discuss youir hypothesis that the archons are 'inorganic'. Could they be inorganic in the sense that they come from another dimension of the 7 invisible ones rolled up with the four visible ones and yet still come form our galaxy in those dimensions --or merely use it(the astral plane). I would prefer to see the archons as organic, originally, but who have evolved in our matrix. I would see the seven other dimensions as higher vibratory rates. The evolution of the Lion & the Greys seemed to be a positive one for a good part of their evolution but turned negative--the bell curve of diminishing returns while one son of the lion evolved into higher dimensions--all a really interesting importation of information from the Nag Hammadi seers. Will the evolution of homo sapiens sapiens be in any way able to help bring into alignment or harmony with the cosmos the earlier evolutions to round out a happy star wars movie ending to the galaxy?

The Description We Seek

John Munter - Although you haven't read my book (yet!), your response belongs to that rare category of exchange that I consider to be truly interactive - by which I mean, human individuals interacting via an overarching circuit of language and imagination that could reach into the planetary mind.

Your notion of "the sophia-logos drama [as] an exploration of Immanence and Transcendence" is appealing and looks to me like a sound extrapolation of Gnosis.  I was particularly struck by your remark that "the template of exploration for our galaxy is the human or humanoid form." This resonates closely to my experience of the plasmic double in bilocation and lucid dreaming. The double is probably the most arcane and misunderstood topic in the entire field of esoterics and parapsychology. I understand that knowledge of the double and its operations was restricted rigorously to oral-only transmission. However, in Castaneda (especially Tales of Power),  there are remarkable disclosures of the double and its manipulation. You do not have to believe that CC was a good guy, or accept his writings as literal act to get the information in them.  Moby Dick is also a fictional work, but who would deny that it contains profound insight into the human condition, not to mention a good deal of first-hand savvy about whaling?

For my comments on magical realism in Castaneda see http://www.PartyXolotl.php#PoorCarlitos

You touch closely on other key points in the modern makeover of Gnosis: "In homo sapiens sapiens we have the wild working out of the double helix with many short incarnations of both male and female going back and forth working out the perfect balance within one being of the glory of matter as an expression of the One--the ultimate and perfect expression of our galaxy. The double helix, in turn, is one exploration of the archetypal string from string theory which composes all matter in this universe."

Rather to my dissatisfaction, I proposed in Not in His Image that we refer to the DNA molecule, rather than Jesus the glorified victim, for an ideal image or generic icon of humanity. Your language here is poetic and veers close to the challenge. Consider the superposition of the sepherotic Tree of Life on the chakra-model - an obvious parallel, perhaps, but who's pursuing it? Throw in the DNA double-helix and compare it to the three-dimensional Tree of Life proposed by Frater Achad in The Anatomy of the Bride (1939). What if the DNA-CHAKRA-SEPHIROT format is a yantra or invocatory diagram for us to attune to humanity? The mantrum that reminds us of ourselves? The earth, Sophia embodied, has its base frequency, the ELF Schumann resonance, around 7.8 Hertz. What is the resonance of the DNA molecule?

I am of course totally jazzed by your evocation of gender-balance in the cosmic equation. There is where we've really lost it, I feel. The dominators could not jerk the world around as they do today were it not for gender conflict.

You say, "There is still room to discuss youir hypothesis that the archons are 'inorganic'." I agree. I find the best working frame for this discussion in Castaneda's description of the organic and inorganic bands. This description is experiential.

"The world, according to don Juan, had to conform to its description; that is, the description reflected itself." CC, Tales of Power.

We are looking for the description to reflect the as-yet-undiscovered dynamic that can shift a self-selecting part of the human species into alignment with the planetary intelligence, Gaia-Sophia, and particularly with her sexual force, mahakundala. Now that's bootylicious.

Gnostalgiac Kubrick?

-"IT and cybernetics resemble Hal, Archotic simulation." Wow. Was Kubrick name-checking Gnostic thought when he named the super-computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey?
