Quinn, Campbell, Pirsig, Watts, Shea & Wilson
This was one of the early books for me that helped me see "how things came to be this way" I've re-read the book a few times over the years and read most of DQ's other books.
The Power of Myth - Joseph Campbell
JC went through a period of intense independent study during the Depression. Campbell states that he "would divide the day into four four-hour periods, of which I would be reading in three of the four hour periods, and free one of them...I would get nine hours of sheer reading done a day. And this went on for five years straight." This is a good intro to his work. "Hero with a Thousand Faces" a good follow up.
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. - Robert Pirsig
I put off reading this for a long time. Lots of people recommended it to me and for some reason it took me a while to get to it. Pirsig helped me a lot with reorienting my perspective.
The Illuminatus! Trilogy - Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson
Ok, it's a trilogy. Whatever. A seminal book for many here on RS I'm sure. This one should open up the flood gates. Prometheus Rising, Cosmic Trigger or Quantum Psychology would be good follow ups. Praise Bob!
The Book On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are - Alan Watts
Good intro for me to un / re programming and Taoism. There's lots of good recordings on YouTube if you're looking for a quick Alan Watts fix. I keep Stephen Mitchell's pocket edition of the Tao Te Ching in my pack/manbag.
