Reawakening Feminine Power

Cover_020508.jpg

Once upon a time, in the sacred societies and temples of the ancient world, women were respected and revered as the living embodiment of their divine role model, the Great Goddess. Their bodies were seen as sacred alchemical vessels of creation and transformation, as radiant temples of Divinity. Deeply in tune with the inner world of spirit and the outer forces of nature, women were known as the "Keepers of the Sacred Mysteries."

Working together side by side, day after day, constantly sharing their insights and observations, their dreams and visions, throughout the centuries, women developed a highly sophisticated body of knowledge. An essential part of this knowledge was learning to perceive and maintain the psychic-energetic-emotional landscape of society, the subtle realm of energy, emotion, vibration, and sensation that is recognized by healers and mystics as penetrating all reality, linking the spiritual planes with the material. In their crucial roles as the mothers, caretakers, visionaries, and peacekeepers, these wise and loving women knew that it was their fundamental task to maintain harmony and balance within their community and the larger world. Knowing that every thought, every action had a profound impact upon not only their own lives and those of their men and children, but on the very fabric of life itself, as teachers, guides, healers, mediators, consorts, and initiators into the sacred mysteries of birth, death, sexuality and spiritual transformation, they transmitted the light and power that sustained all of civilization.

Over the centuries, through trial and error, insight and intuition, teachings and practices were developed that trained young women to focus and enhance their innate perceptive abilities so that they could maintain this psychic-energetic-emotional balance. Passed along through oral tradition from mother to daughter, grandmother to granddaughter, teacher to student, these were symbolic teachings that transcended the use of words and the written language. These practices taught young women how to work with and refine the powerful energy of emotion, attune themselves to the dimension of dreams, portents and visions, and develop qualities such as fearlessness, commitment, right use of power, contentment, happiness, generosity, humility, patience, serenity, love and compassion.

As an essential part of this training, women learned how to awaken, nurture and enhance the feminine gift of second sense we now call women's intuition. Special techniques were developed which enabled them to expand their senses to perceive and interpret the signs and symbols conveyed to them during every moment of life. These signs and symbols and their underlying meaning were seen to arise from every aspect of human appearance, such as facial expression, gesture, movement, vocal tone, smell, skin color, and so forth. But the signs also came from the expressions of the world of nature, inner vision, and the land of dreams. Women spent much of their time learning these subtle languages.

In the sacred temples of India, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Sumeria and many other ancient civilizations, highly specialized techniques were then developed which enabled them to open the mystic or inner eye to perceive and interact with the fluid currents of divine light and energy that create, envelop and connect all living things. The priestesses who resided in these temples mastered yogic practices that enabled them to purify their bodies and minds and transform into the Great Goddess, the most profound role model that shaped and preserved culture and society. Essentially, they would become living symbols of Divinity, Goddesses in the flesh. As the earthly personification of the Goddess, through sacred rituals that included many levels of artistic expression such as song, dance, rhythm, gesture, and storytelling, they displayed her divine qualities for their students, communities, and devotees. In this way, they not only provided a glimpse of the celestial realms, but also an archetype for a more enlightened approach to being human.

As modern day women, who too often have found ourselves caught up in the secular, patriarchal mindset, which has been the signature of our society since the time of the Inquisition and destruction of our sacred women's mysteries, for many of us the image of the Great Goddess and her sacred sisterhood is but a fleeting memory. Alienated from each other by the pressures and demands of our growing consumer culture in which success is measured by outward achievements and the amount of material objects one acquires, we have traveled far from the days when we sat together and attuned ourselves to the subtle languages of spirit. With the increasing levels of divisiveness and discord that have become part and parcel of life in the modern age, as we see our global community becoming increasingly ensnared in the nets of anger, hatred and war, as day by day we witness the increasing destruction of our environment, it time for us women to awaken and once again find our true voices.

We live in a great transformative moment in which each and every one of us has a critical role to play. Many of us are waking up and realizing that we have been ensnared in a hypnotic trance imposed upon us by the media, politicians, advertising executives and many, many others. We are beginning to perceive that the increasing levels of deception, greed and egotism that are part and parcel of our current political and social arena are merely signs of a great purification and transmutation that is taking place on a planetary level. All that was once hidden is being revealed in its profound beauty and horror. In this critical period, with our very survival at stake, many of us are finding the courage within ourselves to come face to face with who we are. Many of us are hearing the call to action.

Prophesies from numerous traditions worldwide speak of a great Shift of the Ages which will occur around the year 2012 in which we will awaken to our true potential as human beings and re-align ourselves with the highest of spiritual values and goals. As the energy of this shift increases and we begin to envision and co-create the world that lies beyond the chaos, beyond the imprinted trance-like haze that has obscured our true clarity, let us take our inspiration from the priestesses and wise women of old. Let us once again open ourselves to our true calling as spiritual leaders and take responsibility for our individual and collective roles in creating and shaping the psychic/energetic landscape of our world.

As we begin this process, let us look to the teachings of the ancient sacred sisterhood. Let us sit together once again as conscious, caring women and dialogue about our feelings, dreams and visions for the future. Let us travel once again into the feminine domain of feeling and emotion, seek out and release our worn out patterns of thought, expression and action and discover the essential light of spirit that resides deep within our hearts – the potent healing current of the Great Mother Goddess.

As a start, for guidance, we can look to the qualities, attributes and expressions of the three main manifestations of the Divine Feminine known throughout the sacred literature as the triple goddess; the fiery goddesses of strength and power; the joyful goddesses of fertility, sensuality, and abundance; and the peaceful goddesses of love and compassion.

The powerful female deities – such as Kali and Durga of India, Sekhmet of Egypt, Athena of Greece, and Simhamukha of Tibet – teach us the true nature of power. In their myths and stories, they demonstrate that real power is not about control, repression, and domination; it is about flexibility and clarity in the midst of chaos. It is the ability to relax in the face of danger, so that we can perceive the situation and take appropriate action. Possessing the fierce and fiery forces of Mother Nature herself, these wild and fiery goddesses are role models of right and appropriate action, who function from a centered and integrated space of wisdom and clarity. The images of these powerful goddesses inspire us to recognize that true feminine power lies not in anger and destruction but in knowledge, understanding and transformation. As we work with their invigorating, transformative energy, the negative passions such as anger, greed, jealousy, fear and so forth are transmuted into the enlightened qualities of clarity, self-confidence, divine pride, determination and fearlessness. The veils of the dark emotions are lifted as we once again align ourselves with the sacred current of truth.

The joyful Goddesses – such as Lakshmi of India, Aphrodite of Greece, Hathor of Egypt, Oshun of Africa, and Mandarava of Tibet – teach us the truly sacred nature of sensuality. Throughout their myths and stories, we encounter a basic awareness of and respect for the beauty and majesty of the female body as a receptacle of and transmitter for divine energy. In the temples dedicated to these Goddesses, the priestesses, as teachers of the sacred sexual mysteries came to understand both the fundamental nature of sexual energy and great potential for spiritual awakening and realization inherent in the art of sexual union. In preparing for their exacting role as initiators into these mysteries, they developed intimate knowledge of every nuance of sensuous expression, transforming the negative emotions of lust, craving and possessiveness into enlightened qualities of discernment, mystery, contentment and ecstatic abandon. Through the process of aligning ourselves with their rich nurturing energy, we can once again become impregnated with the fertile light of spirit and experience the essential sweetness, subtlety, receptivity, and refinement that lie at the heart of true feminine bliss.

The peaceful Goddesses – such as Isis of Egypt, Tara of Tibet, Saraswati of India, Kuan Yin of China and Yemaya of Africa – teach us how to look inward and discover that fundamental light of Divinity that lies deep within the hearts of each and every one of us. In their myths and stories, they demonstrate how to open our eyes and hearts to the perpetual current of truth and beauty that flows through our world and how to lift the dark veils that obscure this pure vision so that we can fully encounter the most profound and transformative experience that any human being can know, that of pure, selfless, all-embracing love. Constantly looking within to encounter and purify their every thought and action, whether sitting together in silent contemplation or moving through the great temples of healing, wherever they went, the atmosphere was suffused with light and grace. For these loving and compassionate women, were so in touch with their own divine nature that they could transmit the essence of this grace with a look, a gesture or a touch.

Womankind, rise up and take hold of your true feminine power! Dare to lift the veils that have obscured your mind and begin to see from deep within your heart. Dare to open yourself to the rich transformative current of love. Love fiercely, courageously, passionately. Do not be afraid to risk all. Do not be afraid to live in truth. Look into the eyes of your children, into the eyes of your mates, parents, sisters and brothers. See the shining light of spirit within them, waiting for their mothers, teachers, healers and wise women to wake up from their long, painful sleep and once again guide them toward true liberation.

Unity

I believe everything you have stated is quite accurate, however it seems that every time you use the words "women, female, feminine, etc" you could have substituted the word "people." Your message is valuable and worthwhile, so why limit it to only a portion of humanity?

Many of the sacred societies in which you say, "women were respected and revered as the living embodiment of their divine role model," would have believed the same to be true for men. The current state of alienation from these ancient mystery sects you describe is as true for men as it is for women. And the need to reclaim the lessons and power of these inner teachings is just as relevant for men as it is for women.

Perhaps it would be more productive to concentrate on unity. As powerful as the ancients believed both the feminine and the masculine traits to be, they were meager in comparison to the power they vested in uniting the two.

If men and women only focus on their respective senses of divinity, then both miss out on huge portions of the spectrum of being. I would urge men to embrace the feminine and women to embrace the masculine in order to become more balanced and unified human beings.

Perhaps the most important words in your article are, "Their [women] bodies were seen as sacred alchemical vessels of creation and transformation." I ask, what is needed for a woman's body to be transformed into a "vessel of creation?"

a little more room please

there has to be room for a woman to express her process about reclaiming the feminine. this article does not in any way strike me as excluding the masculine, it is a study and reconnection with the feminine by a woman. it just isnt about balancing the polarities. it is not angry or castrating, just honoring. i would hope that there is equally as much room for a man to write an article about the sacred masculine. as a woman, i so enjoy holding space for the sacred masculine to emerge in its totality in a man. in those moments it is not necessary to force my femininity in there and say, "hey, thats not allowed, you have to be in unity, what about me?"

What room?

I hope you're being facetious, here, ecolocal...as I for one don't see where we sisters have plenty of room in a world run by men.

Moreover, I don't know where you got the idea that it was an "article written by a woman for other women, therefore making men's opinions irrelevant."

That's a pretty silly thing to say. If the author wanted it to be for women only then why didn't she post it on site geared just for women?

I meant RUN not "run"

Hey Ecolocal,

Just because the last paragraph explicitly addresses women doesn't mean that the piece isn't for men. If I explicitly address God or Freud in a piece, does that mean I'm only writing for God or Freud? No. It's a merely a rhetorical tool.

RE: your belief that the world is being "run" by people of both sexes comes across as a little precious for my taste. When I said the world is run by men i meant it quite literally, and not in some metaphorical way. Governments are run by men. The police and armies are run by men. School systems, major corporations, professional sports, television, radio...you name it...are all run by men. I actually find it rather offensive and belittling that you have the audacity to write: "heh, women know most men are really mama's boys and a bit of titty and pussywhippin gets them in line, no problem."

Yep. We bitches just need to put out and control men thru sex, then we can run the world no problem. I guess I should have tried that on the doods who sexually attacked me in the past, or on the professor who only called on the doods in my class or on my current boss who likes to refer to me as "dear."

If sex is the way to get control than i guess that means lesbos are shit out of luck.

Your personal beliefs on this subject are your own and you are more than entitled to them. Since you decided to share them in a public forum, however, let me just tell you that i think they're pretty outdated and crappy.

EVOLVE!

mmmk

heya ecolocal,

Thx for responding to my comment. I think you read a lot into what I wrote, however. Nowhere did I say that I see every man as an oppressor or potential threat. I was merely challenging your statement that a woman can use sex to control any man by giving examples of situations in which that wouldn't be possible.

I totally see what you're saying about the dark side of the feminine. Fearful women who act out of hate aren't going to make this situation any better. Many women expect unrealistic things from men. They want them to be monogomous, loving partners but still rough, tough and manly. I've overheard plenty of terrible conversations in which a woman is basically tearing up her male partner in a way that she would never condone if it was reversed. A man is a wimp and a failure if he can't provide for his woman, but he is simulataneously supposed to be 100 percent for equal rights. She puts him down for his lack of fashion sense but calls him gay if he shows too much interest in looking good, etc, etc

I see your point also about the fact that behind every great man in power, there's a woman...or lack of a woman, as everyone has different desires that play a role in how they live their lives, but this is also something of a cop-out. I don't know why you have such a hard time with the simple fact that men are really in power and really running the world. Sure we can go through all the factors that effect them as individuals (drinking, drugs, sugar, climate, wealth) and try to claim that they too are indirectly ruling the world, but when it's all said and done, it's just not true. It's the similar to when someone tries to explain a crime that someone committed by explaining all the factors that shaped them as a person--childhood traumas, abuse, etc. When all is said and done, however, the person who actually committed the crime is judged on what he or she did, regardless of the influences on that behavior.

Sex IS used for control, unfortunately, but it's also used for love. I think sex between men and women is ultimately going to play a huge part in healing the rift between the genders.

Finally, thx for the love, Eco. I offer the same to you. It seems you've been hurt before which is evident from your tone and how quickly you jumped to assumptions about what I wrote and also made connections between the author of this article and new agey women from the past who weren't very nice.

I love men and women and I'm very optimistic that the kinds of folks who write and read for this site will be the ones who help implement a change in attitudes on several important mental and spiritual fronts.

Peace!

Sacred Marriage

I do love the article, Sharron. Dawson, I think you make the most important point that those seeking to raise the sacred feminine need to be conscious of the masculine. In fact it is the masculine that contains and guides the creative power of the feminine. They each play their roles and neither should dominate. As we have been experiencing the dominance of the masculine manifesting it's dark side, we could see the same with a dominance of the feminine.

Participating in a ritual last evening, a circle of women gathered with a strong warrior male to be the container of the energy. This representative of the masculine did not overpower or overshadow the pervasive feminine, but provided a different energy to hold the intention of the ceremony.

As a woman, I appreciate being in circle with women, of claiming my feminine power. But I realize as well that the masculine in me must also rise to the occasion to support my feminine creations, to balance earth with the heavens.

Thank you

Thank you goddess, I hear you on a deep level in my goddess heart. It is time for us to step up and I think creating the spaces and time to come together as women is of paramount importance......Love Kinley

What to do with the Masculine?

I absolutely agree with the above comment regarding the masculine part in all of this. As a feminine male, I am learning to integrate masculinity that I previously rejected. Nevertheless, men and women can only move forward by realizing their roles (varying by individual, not necessarily by sexual categorization) to either balance within and interpersonally---I'm ready for the goddess tradition to return in such a way that we can find balance. One things for certain, we need to get beyond the solar cults that have run the world since the days of Ahkenaton. The masculine solar ego needs to realize its role in a larger system, and we need to stop following the madness of solar worship and start to integrate more balance in our spirituality and interpersonal relationships!

Love and unity for sisters and brothers

I believe the templates discussed in this article address our ideals, our most intimate aspirations, that have not yet found stable expression in this world, but may yet... And these ideals are applicable for both men and women. For the soul-spark in our young brothers and sons, as well as our fathers and grandfathers need to be honored. In this oligarchical system men are as split off from their potentials as women and also have need to recover their innate and authentic natures. It is my believe that this alchemy is something most powerfully performed through a participatory relating between the masculine and feminine, within and without. The dangers of separatism is that it breaks the unity inherent in the web of life, in the dance between the sexes. This culture aims to divide and conquer and the most fundamental way it can achieve this is to destroy all trust and respect between the sexes. This is something that should be actively resisted !

Or look at the beautiful sisters and brothers around us, or look at the oceans, mountains and stars...

Strive for Unity

I wanted to echo the statement of the first comment. I too think we should strive for unity. For a while I believe that we needed to work away from the masculine-centered society and create one with a feminine focus. But when would the back and forth end? After awhile, the need for a masculine dominated society would arise once more. Then, once again, back to a feminine society and back and forth. <br>

I do think it is possible to honor the masculine and the feminine and maintain a balance and sense of unity. I think of the yin-yang symbol as a perfect example.<br>

Also, as an artist, I noticed that there was no credit to the art that was featured in this article. I think it would be appropriate to give the name of the artist worked hard to produce the art that you selected to illustrate your essay.

The Illuminati and the Goddess

A very important thing to dig is how the ruling elite, the Illuminati use the 'Goddess' and subvert all of what that mean to their evil intent. Their goddess is Columbia!

Not much has been said about this. What is going on. because it is going on. Their symbolism is all over everything. Not only '9/11', '7/7/7' etc, but major mass media logos, corporate logos, film industry logos, music, you fukin name it! There is a HUGE ELEPHANT in the room, and not many mention about it, cept the Christians investigating the Illuminati, and they are known to condemn the Goddess, save her sexless virgin Christian image...?

Monica Sjoo talked about it in her great book, The Return of the Light Dark Mother. About how a great deal of the 'New Age' shpeel is infiltrated with everything that is anti Goddess, anti Nature, anti Community, though wearing the mask of global religion

labor well the minute particulars

This article relies too much on universalizing what are really culturally and historically specific categories as if "the Goddess" and the role of women in society were universally understood the same way across all cultures in all ancient places at all ancient times. It also takes as facts things that have yet to be established as historically valid or that we can never really know. Most of the literature that treats of a supposed universal "matriarchy" that loses out at a certain point to a generalized "patriarchy" (a problematical and by no means established thesis) dates the transition thousands of years prior to the Inquisition. More troublesome, perhaps, is the assumption that we can know that "Once upon a time . . . women were respected and revered as the living embodiment of their divine role model, the Great Goddess." And how can we possibly claim to know what ancient women thought? Or that the generalized category of all ancient people saw the female body as a "sacred alchemical vessel"? Or that ancient women happened to share our concept that there are "inner" versus "outer" worlds? The main trouble is that vague, generalized categories of value presented as universally valid by one group (men, colonizers, racists) at the expense of others (women, the colonized, ethnic minorities) are what got us into this mess to begin with. There is plenty of literature out there arguing that unquestioned, supposedly universal categories (such as "woman"--See Julia Kristeva, Judith Butler) are in fact the mechanism of bondage. If, as the author says, "Many of us are waking up and realizing that we have been ensnared in a hypnotic trance," then part of the process of waking up is to get critical about our own terms and values and our tendency to impose them on others, living and long gone. May all beings attain liberation.

Core

Lest we lose the energy and intent behind "Reawakening Feminine Power," I would like to applaud Sharron Rose's lyrical urging that women awaken to their power and endeavor to realize their potential for growth, awareness and healing influence. Yes, the lessons are applicable to all human beings, and no, I cannot attest to how women existed millenia before my own time. But hooray for stoking the fire in THIS woman. Like most, I can use such encouragement again and again.

Peace and love,

Ember

Maybe I'm Missing Something, but...

...I don't see where Sharron says anything about giving priority to the feminine or where she says anything about not wanting unity between the genders? The first comment posted a hypothetical version of this text in which the terms for "feminine" were replaced with words that represented both genders at once. This somehow became interpreted as Sharron's thinly veiled attempt to subjugate the masculine.

I don't read anything like that in this piece, which I liked very much. It wouldn't make any sense to try and save the message of this piece and rewrap it so that it was about men and women. I'm sorry but men and women are different...and that's a wonderful thing!!

I personally believe that true unity and understanding comes when you embrace difference and don't try to boil everyone down to being the same. In the case of men and women and all the things they go through, it is my hope that we can peel away the blinders, and start taking a ferreal look at the special nature of each gender, unafraid to realize that some of our age old stereotypes might really be based in fact, while remaining open as well to new possibilities for beauty and pleasure.

We're more than our instincts, but only if we're in control of them!

Thanks for the post, Sharron!

This the 'man' thang!!

Please share this video far and wide. I believe it is very important to add in this thread because the 'Goddess' subject is not some abstract subject that doesn't relate to a whole host of other related subjects. The whole mythology of the metaphor 'Goddess' is a deep pointing and experience to and of the utterly interelated dynamic process and meaning of reality!

What the patriarchy has done, and the male supremacist militaristic occultist secret societes (which are actually in our face!!!) is, divide up reality, both physically and psychologically, so as to gain better 'control' over Nature, all species, and us.

So, to see through their evil plan and doings we have be aware of connection of what they attempt to dis~connect!
