Itching to put a dent in our "hyper-capitalist" society's dominant values of competition, greed, and exploitation? You might be interested in Radical Urban Sustainability Training, or R.U.S.T.

R.U.S.T. is an intensive weekend seminar in urban ecological survival skills organized by the Rhizome Collective, a Texas-based environmentalist nonprofit organization. Its workshops focus on skills related to building autonomous communities in modern cities. Participants engage in hands-on demonstrations of permaculture methods such as low-tech bioremediation, rainwater harvesting, aquaculture, DIY air purificaiton, and various forms of alternative energy. Seminars address topics of social justice ranging from dual anarchism to post-petroleum economics.

The cost of the workshop functions on a sliding scale (pay what you can) falling between $150-$350 and includes camping and meals. Scholarships and work-trades are also available. It's a small price to pay to obtain invaluable skills for navigating the urban economy of tomorrow.

The next weekend workshop will be held from September 27-28 in Albany, NY.

rust

The class filled up last week, before I had a chance to register. I hope they do another training in the near future, and hopefully not just in Austin, TX. I've been following the rhizome collective for a while and recently saw Scott speak in Baltimore. There's a lot of awesome ideas coming from them, alot further beyond the Mollison side of PC that kind of assumes that you have a large amount of property with few restrictions and most of your calories are being produced from intensive agriculture. You can do a lot with RUST on your roof or a small backyard, etc. Is there another training coming anytime soon? I know Scott is teaching at Johns Hopkins this winter... so, I'm crossing my fingers for a rust training in Baltimore in November.

cool

why the hell anyone would leave Austin just to teach at John Hopkins is beyond me though...I'm going to put in a plug for my Amaranth resuscitation program again. If anyone can identify any specimens of this genus, PLEASE nurture it to seed bearing and save the seeds so that we can reclaim this wonderful food resource.
