Pablo Amaringo Passes
The world of art has lost a truly original visionary – a seer in all senses of the word. I think we all join together in wishing him a safe passage to the other side of the river…--Laurence Caruana
Legendary shaman, teacher and artist Don Pablo Amaringo died on the 16th of November in Pulcallpa, Peru after a lengthy battle with illness.
Born in 1943 in Puerto Libertad, in the Peruvian Amazon, he was ten years old when he first took ayahuasca. A severe heart illness--and the magical treatment of this via ayahuasca--led Pablo toward the life of a shaman, and he eventually became a powerful curandero
In 1977, Pablo abandoned his vocation as a shaman. He became a painter and art instructor at his Usko-Ayar school, where there was no charge for the students to learn painting from Pablo.
Renowned for his intricate, colourful depictions of his ayahuasca visions, he was first brought to the West's attention by Dennis McKenna and Luis Eduardo Luna, who met Pablo in Pucallpa while working on an ethnobotanical project. Amaringo and Luna later produced the book Ayahuasca Visions: The Religious Iconography of a Peruvian Shaman.
Before he passed away, he was working on paintings of angels, as well as paintings that documented the flora and fauna of Peru.

Much Praise to Pablo

Heard about this the other night.
Amazing Artist. And from what I've read and people told meA Gifted Healer.
I got a chance to chop it up with him one time at his humble spot in Peru. My spanish being spotty, at best.Pablo's english just the same. We spoke in polite fragments, with extra emphasis on hand gestures and facial expressions.
I asked him about all the spaceships he had in his paintings. And on the subject of Aliens, the man replied,"They take some of us, And We Take Some of Them."
I found this profound and deeply funny.
A good sense of Humor being one of the best signs of an elevated spirit, IMHO.
Safe Travels in HyperSpace Pablo.
Thank You for the Insights
I am deeply sorry to hear
A great loss
Boa Viagem Pablo
Farewell
Pablo Amaringo Paintings
I have put together a small Pablo Amaringo Gallery here. Here is another gallery of Pablo Amaringo ayahuasca paintings from the book Ayahuasca Visions written by Pablo Amaringo and Luis Eduardo Luna.
It would be nice if all of his paintings could be collected into one place, but it seems like they are spread all over the internet and you can only find one or two samples of his work at a time. The good news is that sometimes your effort is rewarded in finding a painting you have never seen before :)
