Out of the Lab

2.JPG

Saint Etienne's 2008 International Design Biennial will unveil Eco Lab, an ambitious project offering expertise in mass permaculture and applied sustainability to urban architectual design. Over 100,000 non-profit organizations will be participating, with experiments ranging from city-wide car sharing and community supported agriculture to "culturally attractive" dry toilets.

Experts will host discussions promoting the constant flow of new ideas, allowing the program to evolve in support of greater global solutions. The community is also encouraged to grow and work together, establishing active human connections while carrying no hint of a religious structure.

City Eco Lab even has plans to re-open the city's main river, Le Furan, and remove over 60 dams from The Rhone. The event runs from November 15th to November 30th in Saint Etienne, France.

Man, say what you want about the French.

A lot of it may even be true: no one is perfect. But they are so awesomely progressive, it makes me jealous.

We Americans could learn a lot from them.

plus c'est change, plus c'est ce meme chose...

Yes, the French w/ their annoying smugness and ability to be individually often wrong but culturally on the whole fairly much spot on right...they can even make toilets sexy without being vulgar...Removing damns and creating openly navigable rivers is another very cool thing that requires an entirely different approach to water management than we have here but that is very possible and in the long run much more efficient than our current system that loses so much water to evaporation and restricts fish migration. Berets may come and go from style but bobs and fishnets are always hot!
