Obama: Antichrist Superstar?

The One 1.jpg

Recently, the campaign of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain has released a series of satirical attack ads against his Democratic counterpart Barack Obama. Following the now notorious "Celeb" ad which lumped Obama in with the likes of Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears, the campaign released a new ad, "The One", which lampoons him for behaving like the second coming of Jesus Christ:

For mainstream McCain supporters, the ad amusingly tackles Obama's perceived self importance and the messianic fervor of his hard core supporters. For Barack backers, the ad is proof positive of the McCain campaign's bizarre, out of touch desperation.

For me personally, the ad had a stranger effect. In an odd incidence of life imitating art (if the world of politics can indeed be called "life"), McCain's attack ad shares many of the themes and images featured in The Grand Inquisitor, a web miniseries filmed in the summer of 2006 which I helped to create.

The Grand Inquisitor is inspired by a famous fable from Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, which has been cited by Laura Bush has her favorite work of literature. Our updated version features a visionary African-American leader known as "The One" who is pilloried by the state-controlled media as a false prophet and an Antichrist.

I conceived the miniseries along with screenwriter Ruth Margraff in response to the presidential election of 2004, which was widely thought to have been decided by unprecedented turnout among right wing, evangelical Christians. At no time during the film's long gestation period did we have a possible Obama candidacy in mind, although he makes a cameo appearance in a opening sequence (created late in post-production). We simply wanted to explore the spectacle of hypocritical religious power, forced to accept a messiah in a form abhorrent to its racist hegemony.

At the time the series was released in late 2007, it was admired for it's dark humor and it's kaleidoscopic visual style. But as political commentary, many thought we came too late to the table. "No one cares about the evangelicals any more" I was told by a politico-blog junkie pal of mine. "They can't even agree on a candidate. They are no longer a factor."

Now, I am quite sure that any connection between "The One" from The Grand Inquisitor and "The One" as Barack Obama is simply coincidence, or at best a fascinating example of synchronicity at work. But looking at McCain's ad though the lens of The Grand Inquisitor, I see something far more troubling, and dangerous, than mere satire at the expense of Barack Obama's vanity.

The truth is, John McCain has little chance of winning unless he can reawaken the Republican Evangelical base. And they have been cool towards him. Not many people I know recall that as a candidate in 2000, an earlier and more authentically "maverick" McCain made a courageous speech attacking the influence of religious extremism in the political process, calling evangelical leaders such as Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell agents of intolerance.

But many on the religious right do remember. McCain doesn't seem to inspire the loyalty among evangelicals that Bush commanded in 2004, with his born again personal narrative (despite the fact that McCain's own story of receiving grace, recounted in the above speech, is infinitely more moving than anything in Bush's spoiled saga). Any many Christians feel manipulated and abandoned by the Republican party, and seem determined to sit this election out.

But if this influential voting block can't be inspired to vote for McCain, they might be inspired to rally against a man who might be more than a minority with liberal/radical views, and more than a mere "Manchurian Candidate" for Al Qadea.

Hal Lindsey, author of The Late Great Planet Earth and father of the modern End Times Prophecy movement, has this to say about Senator Obama:

"America has never faced so many different crises at the same time in living memory. The war with al-Qaida and Islamic terror, the Iran crisis, Afghanistan, nuclear proliferation, the rising price of oil, the falling dollar, enemy acronyms like OPEC, NAM, OIC, U.N. ... Obama is correct in saying that the world is ready for someone like him - a messiah-like figure, charismatic and glib and seemingly holding all the answers to all the world's questions.

"And the Bible says that such a leader will soon make his appearance on the scene. It won't be Barack Obama, but Obama's world tour provided a foretaste of the reception he can expect to receive.

"He will probably also stand in some European capital, addressing the people of the world and telling them that he is the one that they have been waiting for. And he can expect as wildly enthusiastic a greeting as Obama got in Berlin.

"The Bible calls that leader the Antichrist. And it seems apparent that the world is now ready to make his acquaintance."

Despite hedging his bets with "It won't be Barack Obama..." Lindsey's message here seems pretty clear. And McCain's "The One" ad appears to share that message. We are a long way now from John McCain, crusader against the lunatic fridge of the religious right. We now have someone willing to go to considerable lengths to court that very specific demographic.

The terrifying part of this "end of days" flame fanning is this: if you were a true believer convinced that Barack Obama was the Antichrist, you most likely would not settle for half measures like campaigning for John McCain. You might have more drastic measures in mind.

Obama as Antichrist

It's also been said that the religious right will vote for Obama for the exact reason that he's the so-called antichrist. They want the antichrist to come because it's a sign that the christ is soon to follow. TC will then "sweep away the debris" left in AC's wake. Everyone who requests forgiveness for their life-long habit of trashing Earth will pop into heaven & all the eco-conscious recyclers will be left in a heap of trash.

Not gonna happen, though...methinks we're all gonna get that heap of trash.

Namaste.

Who comes up with this stuff

About a year ago an evangelical friend of mine was referring to Obama as the antichrist. I'm not sure how he came to the idea, if it was something he read and had been put out there to brew for awhile by the evangelical media, but it's interesting to see that it's something coming out in a campaign commercial, though only by suggestion.

Another thing about these McCain ads is that they seemed designed in a way to make McCain look weak and desparate and make Obama look good. They seem so blatanly ineffectual that I wonder if they are doing any good for McCain at all and who is actually making them and deciding what they're about and whats in them. I wouldn't think they do anything for getting anyone to vote for McCain.

Ahaha!

Propaganda Anonymous

This piece raises a few thoughts in rapid succession.

First, Wow, that McCain commercial is frickin twisted. So strange.

Second, Politics in general seems so fucked to me right now. Obama's people I think would use 'The One' as a bit of a strategy as well I think. Man this is a dirty game. I am feeling a bit cynical towards our political system this week.

Third thought, McCAin's people seem like idiots to me.

Fourth, You can act man! You were damn good there as the Grand Inquisitor

Meme Warfare

The view points and ideals presented to the american voter are the same as presented by all products. All most anyone really knows is what the press or other news sources tell them, what the ad campaigns inform or create. It's another product, 'brand america!'  They know we want change, they will sell it to us, we will buy it 'vote' on it and continue the same cycle. The truth, our opinions, our feelings our judgement is not wholly ours; it comes down to the cleaverness of the Meme warfare that is abound on all fronts. Everything about our systems our self serving. $$$  It lures us in playing on our emotions, directing our 'rational mind'. Really the same interests are being served by either side, thats my opinion but take a look at consumeristic society, that is the sickness growing in our world. A sickness that comes from our sociopolitical atmosphere, we buy, we spend, we shop we are sold, our mental enviornment is so cluttured, we are so lured into the system, our cultures habits... we have lost tuch. Insanity in many ways has become all that western culture is. It is one grand spectacle. One has to step a long long ways back to see the edges of the screen, to see the stage, game etc for what it is.

" driving with the rear view" " the medium is the message" M.M.

Fact: small things make up bigger things. like our cells that make up our bodies. Such is the nature of organization and systematical existence in our entire reality. Engines on a macro scale are working within our social and mental global spheres (the Noosphere). THese engines can be in tune to the rhythms and patterns of nature, of the symbiotic systems of the biosphere, solar system and beyond. Or they can go in another direction, the myth of the individual, as they are the systems are going off on its own separating path. True democracy? What about true freedom? I want to be free to live off the land, I want to be free to live away from the money engines of our economic systems. We all know why I cant, the vortex of consumption is written into the code and laws that are imposed upon us by the ideals of capitalism and governing society. IN many ways we are slaves, willing participants in the enslaving, like being trapped into the gas tank of one of these macro engines, the macro engine of western culture, like everything else in the tank, we will just be consumed. If we loose the ability to have the time to create, imagine and bring into this world art humanity will be lost forever. As it is few even know what art is. If you know what it is, now is the time. The hidden messages of 'god' are in the patterns, rhythms and cycles of nature, we must listen to be able to survive. Time is short. I have faith in my personal survival, do you?

So who you going to vote for? Someone who will help the economy? Someone who will do something great for humanity?

Whoever is writing history (corporate owned media) is writing it their way in the present and I disagree with it, my rational mind found its way here for a reason.  Who's agendas are being portrayed?  Who's are not?

Spirit infused with matter, oh how lost we are, this sickness is everywhere I can not tame my mind, it haunts me it calls us all to death, madness. it is time for each and everyone of us to become the second coming myth incarnate, the return of the hero is something each of us are individually responsible for and then on the personal level we become aware of larger oceans of humanity.  The ideals of speration, the myths of the individual show there true face as teh evils abound in this reality.

I know this is a bit of a ramble but for goodness sakes someone hear me. Someone hear the cry of the silence coming from our natural world, it is the voice i speak to all with. Time to listen, act, create imagine and birth anew. ART

light love and blessings to all.

Elitism anyone?

Don't waste your energy on political hype.

The reality of Elitism exists... A one world government is their agenda... but the unveiling of universal truths will erode the misguided schemes of our contemporary cultural, political and societal trends.

engagement

Alokananda

I appreciate the spirit of your sentiment. I do.

But I am a filmmaker. I engage with popular media. That is my heart work. And the archetype I engaged is now actived in front of a million people, as hate speech.

Lets engage with THAT. What is the meaning here? Do posters believe there is a karmic connection with what I put out and what the McCain campaign came up with?

I'm getting a lot of philosophical ruminations, but what's behind this eerie mirror effect? What's the active energy at work here? I'd like to hear some responces based on the material itself.

Elitism anyone?

CORRECT!

Hmmmm

Wow people are actually putting together this connection. I made a joke about Obama being the antichrist months ago because he is very vain in his stating that he has the answers and solutions to the problems that have surfaced. Maybe Obama is the Antichrist however I may just have to take that chance because look who he's going up against. McCain will dig us so deep (I believe) in the dirt that it would be even harder for America to live prosperous in our own country. There is a large similarity between Obama's characteristics and the antichrist however how can one know. And besides if it is written in stone that the Antichrist WILL come to power then it is virtually impossible for anyone to stop this prophesy from arising. If anyone has not already read the book Prophesy by Sylvia Browne she makes a very specific prediction regarding the next president of the United States and if she is right (and I hope she's wrong) and I am right about Obama being the next president of the United States then Obama couldn’t possible be the Anti Christ. Only time will tell.

cjmore

Yes cjmore, Sylvie is a Christian (or so she stated) and yes she makes a lot of money selling these books. She is a Physic or prophetess what ever you want to call it. I guess she is calling him Antichrist due to what the population is calling him. My thing about it is although she wants to make money off of her gift she has been right about a lot of things and wrong about few things that she has stated to the public. But then I don’t really know what a Christian is seeing how their are so many different definitions.
