Interest in Salvia Divinorum is surging after a video was released of Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus allegedly smoking the substance from a bong at a house party shortly after her 18th birthday.

Though the plant is legal in California, where the party took place, some legislators like California's assemblyman Anthony Adams are calling for its prohibition, fearing a full-blown Party in the USA. Salvia, also known as Diviner's Sage, has traditionally been used as an entheogen, but has gained traction as a recreational substance in recent years as people look to it as a legal alternative to marijuana. Those who have experienced salvia will often tell you that it's not exactly a party drug, with its effects including, in some cases, total ego death. Of course, there is also the possibility that the PR machine entrusted with safeguarding Cyrus's image stated that she was smoking salvia to spare her the criticism she'd receive if it came out that she'd in fact been smoking other less legal plants, like marijuana. Her claim, in the video, that she was suffering a 'bad trip' seem to indicate otherwise. The attention Salvia is receiving as a result continues to grow, whether or not it's what was actually being smoked.

Though it definitely looks, on video,like Cyrus is celebrating her birthday in the fashion that teens have done for decades, the cultural implications of this attention to Salvia rather than, say, Four Loko, could be enormous if legislators can be convinced of its safety. Pop culture is saturated with former child stars who have attempted to self-medicate with cocaine and alcohol. They are rapidly vilified but still magnetize our attention. What if, instead of numbing themselves with hedonic substances, they chose to heal with entheogens? It remains to be seen if Cyrus will speak out on behalf of psychedelics. At this point she is keeping her head down and working diligently on a new film.

It still absolutely blows my mind that not ONE single source of Salvia sells it as what it is. You would have to be a complete moron to think ANYONE buys it for "legal herbal incense."  

"Ooooh. While I'm at this headshop buying a 'tobacco water pipe' maybe throw in $40 of that delicious incense you have there...Salvia, right? I bet that smells good." 

Here we have the ONE mainstream psychedelic compound that manages to fall off the Scheduling charts by not being an alkaloid, but whoever distributes it is STILL fucking up BIG TIME.

I hope to some day see HONEST, FACTUAL information is distributed with it----how about the labels get changed to say "contains a powerful visionary compound that is nothing like marijuana and may occasion some or all of the following experiences: death, rebirth, past lives, female presence(s), intense fear, reality dissolution. Responsible users will have a sober sitter and have 60-90 minutes set aside to re-coop."

 Wow that was hard.

But, because this LEGAL compound is sold under false pretense without facts, you get non-prepped explorers looking for a fun, stoned magic show-like experience, and instead have a frightening collapse of reality and Ego. Hopefully Miss Miley did her homework----and I can only hope she is faced with the frightening truths the Shepherdess has to offer someone whose life is governed by Egoic materialism and fame.

Either that, or it was weed and she was lying. :-)

Unfortunately I see more people in the abuse catagory then I do in the use one. Comparison...I used Cannibus Savitus years ago as a compound of enlightenment, how do u mean? you might ask?...used by an intelligent responsible person this plant allows you to experience a wide range of emotion and focus one particular feeling at request. I used it with a chosen group of friends and we would have some of the deepest conversations in my life about the world and the universe to date. We spoke of God very often and came to the conclussion in 2004 that if you connect all the minds on the planet at once with no inhabitions you have....God. or at least a better understanding of one. The use of this drug was never abused by us..it happened once every 3 to 6 months or so...a mood had to be attained by all members before experimentation...if the state of mind to use was not present in all of us we waited untill it was. Abuse on the other hand is an unfortunate mistake and truthfully I dont understand its practice...to numb the mind until it effects everything around you negatively can in no way be productive. Hopefully Ms. Cyrus is aware of the difference, because she is a role model for our youth like it or not...I myself have 5 children and they are all aware of the Use vs Abuse concept. Of course my kids use the information with soda and fatty foods, but the seed is there for them to observe...final thought?...Teach

I really think this is insane that they think that people will start getting hooked on salvia.... if u ask anyone who has ever done salvia they will tell you that is the most horrifying whirl wind of questioning reality. Tay -_-
