HIV Death Penalty

A U.S. author is claiming that a secretive group of American politicians is behind a Ugandan proposal to impose the death penalty on HIV positive men who have committed what it calls "aggravated homosexuality."
Jeff Sharlet, author of The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power, claims that money in support of the bill is coming from inside U.S. political circles. He says that the main proponent is a Uganadan legislator who is very close to the work of "The Family", a secretive Fundamentalist Christian sect made up of lawmakers in D.C.
The proposed Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009 is viewed by many as a signficant step backwards for Uganada--a country where it is already illegal to be gay:
"The proposed law would not just condemn HIV positive gay men and 'repeat offenders' to death, it would also jail for three years anyone who knows a gay man but refuses to report them to authorities. Further, anyone who defends in public the rights of gays and lesbians would be subjected to a seven year prison term."
Sharlet thinks it's likely that the bill will pass despite international resistance led by Canada and the U.K.

conspiracy theories are so common...
they are like Tiger Woods' mistresses-- no end to them.
Thanks for the Daily Show link, Chris
I'm always intrigued by conspiracy theories such as these because they are one the one hand very compelling and possibly true and on the other, the projection of a nearly irrational fear towards religion that is espoused by many who have broken free of its ideological hold.
For me, the jury is still out. I know that when Dubya was elected it seemed that the ONLY explanation was that a hugely wealthy right wing power base was pulling the strings--rigging the election and doing things that make Watergate look nice. Whether this is really a conspiracy or happening right under our noses is another issue... I dunno...but I do know that the proposed law is pretty awful and a reminder that we still have a long way to go until everyone is free and safe in this world.

whats new?
the more I read about JFK conspiracies
The sillier it became; it was like Woodstock: everyone was there, from the FBI, CIA, to the Mob.
Then it branched off into the question of did both JFK and RFK have affairs (everything comes around to sex eventually) with Marilyn Monroe and have her murdered?
here is my take
1. John John had his father assassinated.
2. Nellie Connally attempted to have her husband John Connally assassinated, but one bullet hit JFK in the head instead of the intended victim, Connally.
3. John John & Nellie Connally conspired together.
4. John John, Caroline Kennedy, and Nellie Connally all conspired together to assassinate JFK AND John Connally.
5. Jackie Kennedy was in on it, too.
