Military Minefields

This essay originally appeared in Conscious Choice Magazine.
Recently, while at a Phoenix, Arizona conference on UFOs, crop circles, alternative archaeology and other such fringe matters, I encountered, to my surprise, a true American hero. A straightforward and unassuming man whose father was a well-respected Alaskan congressman, Dr. Nick Begich has been waging a long and often lonely campaign to raise the public’s awareness of the extraordinary perils and potentials of new technologies that can act upon the brain and influence our cognitive and somatic capacities, often without us knowing about them. At first, many of the military initiatives and scientific research projects described by Dr. Begich sound like science fiction — the stuff of Philip K. Dick’s most paranoid visions — but they are quite real, and in many cases already available. A huge trove of documents, articles and public testimonies assembled by Begich’s team can be found at the website of The Lay Institute.
Confronted with this information, I was shocked at first, and wondered why it is almost never discussed in the media or public sphere. My next reaction was to want to run away from thinking about it ever again. Unfortunately, as Begich makes clear, the only protection we have against misuse of these discoveries is an increase in public knowledge and debate about them. The legislative system we inherited from the 18th Century was not set up to deal with the current scenario, where rapid-fire developments in technology and science have immediate political meaning and potentially great social consequences. It is up to civil society — and us as individuals — to step into this breach. The consequences of not doing so may be severe.
Dr. Begich began his work studying the HAARP (High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program) Project, an array of radio frequency transmitters in Alaska designed to affect the ionosphere, an atmospheric sheath that protects the Earth from solar rays. Beyond potentially influencing missile guidance systems and changing weather patterns, HAARP can also be used, potentially, to affect the brainwaves of civilians over a large geographical area, causing inexplicable agitation or aggression by beaming ELF (extremely low frequency) waves or high-frequency pulses beyond the threshold of our auditory capacity. Dr. Begich objects to HAARP because of this capacity, and because it changes the delicate ionosphere. Although we don’t know much about the ionosphere, we are treating it as an arena in which to “plug and play” our experimental technologies.
In the last decades, a huge amount has been learned about the electromagnetic environment of the human brain and body. This knowledge, as Dr. Begich discusses in his latest book, Controlling the Human Mind: The Technologies of Political Control or Tools for Peak Performance (Earthpulse Press, 2006), could lead to tremendous advances in healing and in methods of self-development, or to weapons that “pierce the very integrity of the human being.” Potentially, memory, emotion and cognitive function can be transformed by these technologies.
Dr. Begich isolates a spooky trend in military thought that sees the human being reduced to the status of a “data-processing system” that can be affected or incapacitated depending on the energy inputs it receives. As one article, “The Mind Has No Firewall,” from Parameters, the U.S. Army War College Journal, put it, “The body is capable not only of being deceived, manipulated, or misinformed but also shut down or destroyed — just as any other data-processing system.” Electromagnetic or acoustic energy waves can alter the individual’s “hardware system” and manipulate the “data” stored in their psyche. According to Dr. Begich, technologies already exist that can “shift a person’s emotions using remote electromagnetic tools,” and “transfer sound in a way where only the targeted person” hears a voice in their head.
Interestingly, developments in these areas could lead to breakthroughs in healing, to tools that greatly increase cognitive function and even amplify “abilities of individuals for anomalous phenomena” — psychic capacities — according to a military analyst. Biofeedback techniques have been proven to accelerate skills-based learning and to successfully treat children with ADD. Use of “binaural beats” can harmonize relationships between the two hemispheres of the brain, while tools focusing on the energy fields of the body can augment acupuncture and other treatment modalities.
Begich calls for an end to government secrecy about study of mind and behavior control techniques. He notes that the area of mind modification technologies is “changing so rapidly that the science is being formed faster than the applications can be fully recognized.” Considering the enormous potential of these tools to help liberate the mind or control it at a level beyond anything previously known, the U.S. public should demand to have a rigorous “precautionary principle” put in place.
Philip K. Dick is great fun to read, but few of us would want to live in one of his maniacal, paranoid dystopias. Unfortunately, the powerful knowledge we are now accessing about the intricate workings of our energetic systems could lead in that direction, if we don’t take action.

"Will it be used to incite feelings of hate leading to war which leads to increased profits or will it be used to induce feelings of love that lead to such things as increased population and reduced spending and debt?"
Ah, the double bind of perfected nihilism: we can only hope to save the village by destroying it. This is the paradox that shows us our civilization has run its course, and is finished. We cannot make a move, we have lost our nerve - checkmate.
Let the dead bury the dead, as the JC saying goes - instead of expiring, let us aspire: focus on the birth not the death.
Thinking about it as I type, the ability to distinguish life from death may be the one crucial ability of our times.

The Sound of Soothing Haarp Music
As I understand it, HAARP was only recently switched on. There are some curious patents related to the project, here's a link to one that has the chemtrail watchers buzzing: http://www.bariumblues.com/haarp_patent.htm
Testing military theories on the cud chewing public is of course not without precedent. The UK Ministry of Defense released potentially harmful micro-organisms into vast areas of Britain to test the country's capacity to withstand Soviet germ warfare attacks, according to documents recently released:
"One chapter of the report, 'The Fluorescent Particle Trials', reveals how between 1955 and 1963 planes flew from north-east England to the tip of Cornwall along the south and west coasts, dropping huge amounts of zinc cadmium sulphide on the population. The chemical drifted miles inland, its fluorescence allowing the spread to be monitored. In another trial using zinc cadmium sulphide, a generator was towed along a road near Frome in Somerset where it spewed the chemical for an hour."
and:
" 'Tacit approval for simulant trials where the public might be exposed was strongly influenced by defence security considerations aimed obviously at restricting public knowledge. An important corollary to this was the need to avoid public alarm and disquiet about the vulnerability of the civil population to BW [biological warfare] attack.' "

edit: It's truly amazing that the Lay Institute's work isn't more widely known. Reading through some of the papers collected there is deeply disturbing and eye opening. Compared to this stuff, Stephen Greer seems like small fry.
influence
i think its important to emphasize that these technologies, in many cases they merely influence people's minds, not control.
I think that the rhetoric of control masks the fact that some folks vibrate at a higher frequency and can tune this shit out, while other folks who are eating Whoppers and drinking Coke all day while strung out on big Pharm watching the Spectacle Box---of course these folks can be easily controlled like a herd.
We are not the herd. We can't stop these technologies, but I can see them turning on the folks who are implementing them, the master's tools rebelling against the master...
I can see our consciousness rising above them, and destroying them/or using them for justice
wanderlust
Freedom from Ego
Good point wanderlust.
I was wondering today about the similarities between the counter cultural types who gather at such places as RS, and the early christian gnostics. The gnostics considered that they constituted an elite group, spiritually mature, who had experienced the mystery firsthand and therefore could abandon official church doctrine where they saw fit. By nature I am anti-hierarchy, and I don't believe in leaders, but I think there is something in this worth exploring. It could be that those of us who have committed to acheiving some form of freedom from ego may in fact be able to ignore any attempt at magical-technological manipulation of perception...if you can see through the political spin circus that is the media, its perhaps not a big leap to recognise when we are being assaulted by subtler illusions. Dale Pendell has a great phrase - "ground state calibration," which he considers an essential, fundamental practice for "doctors of the poison path." He means, basically, knowing the core, the origin, and being able to return to it calmly....no matter what miracles and horrors we might have seen on our journeys through the stars. It is with a similar feeling, I guess, that Buddha's first act upon attaining enlightenment is to touch the earth.
Arbitrarily steering our thoughts
It's our part, WE must learn a new awareness-control of our own mind. We have to steer arbitrarily our thoughts in each moment to leave a strangely-influence no area in our awareness. We should send -really arbitrarily - what in love we are able to sent and just receive, what in love was sent. We live in hyper-communication. Maybe It will be a new form of meditation to shield our spirit and this is we should give our energy to because we can't fight against these technologies. To fight is not the right way and energy. If the sender reaches no recipient, it could send, what it wants to, the data will not be processed. Since nearly two years, I look every day "by chance" - at 11.11 a.m. on the clock. First, I was surprised at it. Then, I learned to put my whole good thoughts-force and feelings into one minute and how to send them. I try to send them any time, but this minute is most on concentrated. Where them arrives? I don't know. However I have a good feeling about it.

HAARP According to a Supposed Remote Viewer
I had a very strange experience in which I met a Native American woman who literally walks across the country every few years or so. This woman, now in her 50s I am guessing, is a Cornell-trained dentist. She told me that her father was in the CIA, and that when she was young, she was trained as a remote viewer. Her ESP potential was tested, but she got every answer in the card set wrong. She learned later that she got every answer in the NEXT card set right, but counted her blessings she was not recruited since, supposedly, she would have been remote viewing somebody one day who would be "heart-attacked" the next day, n'est-ce pas?
As someone registered to this site, I was obviously intrigued by her story. She also had a very pleasant demeanor. I asked her about domestic assassinations and HAARP (I did not know the name of it at the time). I wanted to know whether such mind-control radars existed, sort of like the one portrayed in "They Live." As someone who was plagued by extremely negative thoughts (diagnosed as OCD) when I was a kid, I sometimes questioned whether some external mechanism might exist which could possibly be responsible. The idea seemed absurd, but I pride myself on my open mind.
She said that such radio frequencies ARE emitted (whether via HAARP I'm not sure), and they cause the brains of people -- particularly those psychically attuned -- to secrete chemicals that prompt very unpleasant thoughts and anxiety. A sort of "jamming" if you will.
Let me say I take all of this with a grain of salt, since I know little about this person, though she seemed ingenuous. But it occurred to me that when one is putting any sort of signal in the atmosphere, it is possible the effects on people may not be well understood or known. Ditto for cell phones, microwaves, "trace" amounts of "acceptable" pollution, etc. Since we know that govt. and industry is willing to routinely lie about or cover up bona fide pandemics brought on by pollution they caused, it is fair to think they might look the other way when a small disparate group is affected by its activities. It's truly shameful that America the Beautiful insists government activities be private and the public's transparent, and not the other way around. Or, to paraphrase V for Vendetta, that the people are afraid of the military-industrial-government complex and not the other way around. As someone who, at fifteen, insisted his parents buy an American car because I was so pseudo-patriotic, it's quite disillusioning to even WONDER if we are not creeping toward totalitarianism. Are we the proverbial frogs in the slowly boiling water, thinking we're getting a pleasant bath, when in fact we're being threatened? How odd that I used to consider such thoughts paranoid, or wing-nuttish, and instead now wonder if I will be marginalized because I have them myself.
