Meditations in an Emergency
Daniel Pinchbeck
Over the last few days, I have received several warnings from people that I consider more knowledgeable than most about the potential for a severe socio-economic disruption within the next week. The Arlington Institute, a future trends think tank, has been doing a study of precognitive dreams. Of course, dreams are imprecise yardsticks, but based on past patterns, they do seem to reveal aspects of what may take place. John Peterson, the director of TAI, believes that this data, along with other indicators he tracks, reveals the potential for a severe crisis that could unfold this weekend or early next week. Possibilities include a “terrorist” event such as an electro-magnetic pulse weapon, detonated on the East Coast of the US. Such an explosion could lead to a temporary wipeout of electronic equipment and hard drives, forcing the financial system itself to "reset." Another option may be some development connected with Iran or Russia.
Friends from within the financial world have contacted me to note that the panicked sell-off of stocks may indicate foreknowledge, on the part of some insiders, of an imminent announcement of even worse news than we have heard so far. This could be related to the banking system, or a military maneuver. One option that has been raised is that the banking system will be shut down next week. The officials may be waiting until after banks close on Friday to release this information, in order to limit panic, giving time for the information to be absorbed (Monday is a bank holiday).
I am suggesting to friends that it may be prudent to have some cash and basic provisions on hand, as the next few weeks may see some disruptions in basic services. Of course, this is still highly speculative and unlikely. However, it seems prudent to make some preparations, however modest.
On the larger scale, we should see interruption of “business as usual” as a good thing. The current system of predatory global industrialized capitalism is destroying the biosphere, and we need this entire system to be transformed rapidly if we would like to survive as a species. The disruptions could be a profound opportunity to connect people to a new value system and change the direction of global culture - as well as opening the heart chakra to universal compassion. Unfortunately, many people only seem capable of appreciating the suffering of others when they have suffered themselves.
The choice we may face, rapidly, is between a massive growth in collective intelligence and social awareness or a retraction into warring tribal factions, leading to species die-off. Ultimately, the collaborative and cooperative model is going to win out, replacing the immature system of “dog eat dog” competition that has gotten us to this point.

a warning and a gift
Felix dude, before I checked on this site (keep up the good work guys!) I was travelling on the astral plane and met my spirit familiar. He said to me, 'today you will meet a guy who needs your help'. He will be the kind of guy who probably works in IT, maybe drives an SUV (black) and is kinda dead inside . Is that you? He told me that guy has to change his ways. If he doesn't he will run as a rabbit before the dogs of the bad man in Spirituana. If he does he will be a beautiful spirit, a transcendental force for world harmony. Felix, you gotta embrace the bioenergetic divergence and change. Take care brother you can do it. Pick some wildflowers. Read a book. Bake a loaf of bread. Live in the countryside. Grow vegetables. Dress in old blankets. I saw it in my vision.
Hi guys
Banyan Tree, Felix --
let's please not devolve into any sort of insults or character assumptions against one another here. Whether you agree or not, the topic at hand demands mutual respect and cooperation first and foremost.

"reveals the potential for a severe crisis that could unfold this weekend or early next week. Possibilities include a “terrorist” event such as an electro-magnetic pulse weapon, detonated on the East Coast of the US. ... Another option may be some development connected with Iran or Russia."
Well it's now Thursday and the terrorists have yet to nuke the east coast. Sorry to keep harping on this, but I am pretty disapointed in this post especially coming from an author I really respect. These kind of pronoucments are not very useful and may upset the crazies.

Why do I keep getting the feeling...
Freakin Full Moon and Lunacy
Well, October 14 is a Full Moon in Aires, a sign of new beginnings. It is also the day of the Canadian Federal Election.
I'm rather certain things will get freaky next week, if only for the full moon. But I do think it's important to not fall into some kind of hyper-Apophenia.
Regardless, I think what you've touched upon and written here Daniel, sums up the global situation pretty succintly; Economical/Ecological and the need for Preparation/Calm while considering ... every dream inbetween that remains to be seen.
face on mars
interesting they use the face on mars as an example of "pareidoliac apophenia."
wonder what Richard Hoagland would think? He extrapolated a whole hypothesis of torsion physics from that "apophenic" phenomena.
"Will the transformation."-Rilke
Monkeying Around
Yeah, I don't think that Wikipedia "definition/description" of apophenia or pareidolia is very well thought out.
But it's easy to let the imagination run away on you and then get tangled up in all sorts of connections self-imposed or evident or profound, that sometimes have the effect of causing extreme paranoia or just filling one with so much "information" that winds up either clouding any actual situation or overloading the system.
Because once one begins exploring connections made by others (ie: spending days watching certain Youtube videos) or making connections on their own, there comes the realization that all these strange things are connected!!! Of course, everything is connected and so whenever something happens or is supposed to happen or predicted and so forth there is somekind of orgasmic cheer from the crowds that just knew something was going to happen, as if things aren't always happening. And one way or another, in casual terms or profound terms; it's all made up. So what then do we make?
Let me put it this way:
The Wiki article for Pareidolia also mentions this: "In September, 2007, the so-called "monkey tree phenomenon" caused a minor social mania in Singapore. A callus on a tree there resembles a monkey, and believers have flocked to the tree to pay homage to the Monkey God."
When all these situations or potential connections, predictions and alignments come to light we can either focus in, go crazy and see the Monkey God and ramble and speculate about what the Moneky God means in a zillion conspiratorial ways... or we can stand back and observe the tree, exploring it's many connections, learning from it in many ways, eating from it, building from it, growing with it.
Yikes
All ye shall witness when Babylon falls
Thanks Daniel. Part of me hopes that this prediction gets proved wrong. We never like to see people suffering. But for the most part I welcome the collapse of the international financial system. I think we are seeing the beginning of just that.
The current system is totally fictitious. Between fractional reserve banking (banks only needing to have 1/10 of what they lend out) and the derivitaves market (these same banks borrowing from each other, borrowing against each others debt, and investing money that has not been made yet) it appears that there is very little actual money anywhere. People and institutions have begun to call in their debts only to find nobody has the money. The house of cards every wise investor has warned about for years has started to topple over.
I don't know if we need this whole system to collapse completely before we can fully sort ourselves out, or if any of it remains relevant. I don't really think this system addresses human needs, but I know the transition will be painful for all.
I agree with you Daniel that ultimately the cooperative model will win out. Organisms that don't adapt die. As do systems like our financial system.
cheering against the crowd
han shan
Yeah Naga, I think the financial collapse has to occur if we are going to see the kind of change in consciousness that we're all hoping for. Even in knowing that it will be a painful transition and possibly even dangerous I still root for those plummeting abstract numbers in the Dow Jones on a daily basis.
I've taken a kind of crash course in economics lately in order to try to understand this mess of fractional reserves, credit default swaps and generally the way the world economic system works and have come to the conclusion that its a sham that keeps us on a tread mill of wage slavery. And, from the perspective of a person with a low paying physically exhausting mind numbing job within a culture which drains people of their creativity and turns them into mindless automatons, to say I'm pissed off about it is an understatement.
And so I feel a little disconnect when I'm driving to and from work listening to NPR and I hear the alarmed pundits and concerned citizens ruminate on the "financial crisis". Sure everybody on "main street" is too exhausted to be concerned with much more than paying their mortgage and taking care of their children, but thats really no excuse anymore. The best possible scenario for our children's future is the destruction of this system right now. We cant have freedom and have security and it seems that some opportunities are coming our way and so we must decide. I personally feel to wake up in a world where there's nothing left to do but find the others and begin creating solutions sounds like the greatest ecstasy.
My friends and I wrote this song called 'This Worlds On Fire" and its my soundtrack to what I'm seeing in the world right now. The world is simply what human beings project onto the earth itself and in this sense worlds can pass away and new ones can be born.

Yes!!!
Perhaps
Perhaps Reality Sandwich could post a small (right-column) article with the details and then people can Digg it, Facebook it, email it, et. al. Something simple like:
"In the midst of the current world financial crisis is an opportunity to affirm our connection to each other by meditating and/or praying together to be calm, present and lucid during this anxious time. A single person settling their mind has great effect on oneself. Doing so together we can reinforce our greatest asset: our ability to support each other."
I'd say 20-30 minutes. Maybe in the middle of the week, like Wednesday, when things are likely to be craziest. Or sooner? Sunday? I remember when "Fire the Grid" called for a worldwide meditation I woke around 6:00 or 7:00 am NY Time.
I wouldn't mind doing it even if it was just a handful of people. You gotta start somewhere.
Good idea...
I like this idea, Martin. PM me and let's discuss...

The Arlington Institute's Dream Report
(r)evolution for all
At Earthdance Miami, an astrologer spoke (Chris Witecki? Wisecki?) who said the astrological charts in the October and November haven't been seen since the time of the American Revolution. I don't know much about astrology, but it does resonate with the current times.
Much talk about martial law being declared. I've felt for YEARS now this would happen around the time of the 2008 elections. Looking at the recent, unabashedly pro-elite actions by Obama and the de-evolution of the GOP into a racist mob, I wonder what political side has the most to fear from martial law being declared. Also note that Palin's beloved seccesionist party considers Alaska the last refuge in the world from the powers of the "new world order."
I support obama, i've donated to obama, but i can't shake the feeling he's the feyd rautha sent to "rescue" us from beast rabban.
Pres. Bush is being his usual incoherent, mindless self but somehow manages to mention the "ILLUMINATING conversations with friends" he's been having, who say that "we're gonna get through this together."
If any of you are into synchromysticism, many signs point to the dawning of a worldwide solar religion in conjunction with an "alien" visitation or UFO disclusure from one or more major governments. Possibly in conjunction with the collapse of the global financial system, we will move back to a "gold standard" of currency.
As i live in south florida i have a fair amount of provisions socked away in case of emergency but i'm still going to buy some this weekend, as we could be in for a rough ride these next few weeks. I also plan to set aside more time than usual for trance-state exploration and meditations on the heart chakra.
Ultimately it is blatantly obvious that a tremendous amount of "illusion" is crashing down in our global worldview. From a dualistic perspective it may feel like we are in for deep doo-doo and this may be true, but from a non-dual perspective we are ALL connected and this is all one big process. A brief moment of especially exotic love-play between Shiva and Shakti. We shall see.
Let the (R)evolution begin.

The cherry, not the pie
Daniel,
Here is a NY Times opinion piece (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/10/opinion/10mulligan.html?th&emc=th), not brilliant, but more or less sensible, reminding us that the financial system is the cherry, not the cake. The actual production of goods and services goes on. Human beings work and create, whether the ruinously destructive financial house of cards stands or falls.
Not that the changes you are talking about are not coming. No doubt they are, but it is so easy to get hypnotized by "the news" and forget how much it is a specialized construct and not necessarily the "truth" about what's happening on a global scale. I learned that when I was living in a small town in a country (Haiti) where a coup and revolution happened and nobody there knew about it. I found out from listening to an overseas radio station!
The core of the economy is not financial sleight-of-hand. The core of the economy is people working, with special attention to work that is never paid in currency and never acknowledged as "production" by economists, like the work of mothers.

Parallel topic on the barbarian group blog
Hello Marc,
Upon reading your post here, I couldn't help but notice the similar thought I read in a blog on the barbariangroup's website. The barbariangroup is a progressive digital advertising group for those of you who are not familiar with them. I think many of you would find this post intriguing, so I will attach the link at the bottom here and you can choose to read it at your leisure. Here is Rick Webb's own summary of his piece..
" 1) The current system has lost track of their current underlying realities as it relates to currency and goods
2) The current system has NOT last track of their current underlying realities when it comes to energy and human's reactions to it. It's just that this is manifested in other ways than currency: happiness, fear, stress, health, panic, environment, etc.
3) The economy has ALWAYS tracked to more than money, it's just that money made a mildly useful yardstick. the utility of that yardstick is now lessened
4) We need new yardsticks"

So let me get this straight....
Say uncle Bob goes to the bank and asks for credit to buy whatever. He cannot pay back this loan however, defaults, and "visualisation/meditation" is going to "fix it"?? Really? Hmm.
"We will shortly see the collapse of the economies and currencies of the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The speed of this collapse is catching many by surprise. It will happen once their overseas investors withdraw confidence in their economies and withdraw their capital. Without being able to roll over their loans there will be a collapse of their currencies and defaulting on their international debt obligations. They will be blamed for the economic crisis that has engulfed the globe, bringing the hatred of the whole world against them.
It will result in the Anglo-Saxon nations sink into abject poverty; their people face starvation, disease, famine, and abject poverty. Their people will suffer greatly, as their societies sink into anarchy, as law and order breaks down, and society collapses. Their nations will be taken over by their creditors as they try and recover their debts, and their people put into slavery. It will be a time of great suffering and tribulation to its people."

The perfect meditation
This is a meditation listed as a practice "for endless courage and endurance against the entire universe" in the book "Kundalini Yoga Sadhana Guidelines 2nd Edition" that personifies the shift from fear to love. It's description is as follows:
One of the hallmarks of the yoga lifestyle is to pay attention to the rhythms of nature that we are part of. As we express our creativity in our culture, business enterprises and other activities we can easily get out of touch with the fundamentals of our biology, our patterns of energy and the cycles of the day. This meditation is done at twilight, as our energy naturally shifts. We take advantage of that shift and direct the change to give us strength. Yogi Bhajan commented "If the tongue is properly kept turned inside the mouth, and you start chanting, Har, then you will understand the English word "ecstasy." It is just a balance between the lower back, spinal cord, you, and the tongue. It can change your vibration, nervous system, and your central nerve, to be so strong that after practice you become very fearless. Most things we do out of fear. We think we love, but we don't. In our life, love is our attachment to our emotions, and fear is our constriction of our self-power. Bot are bad. Actually, when you are really in love you are humongous. Nothing can stop you. If you are afraid, you freeze, you can't move properly. You have two things to do: Carry the day and carry the night. You want to go to work to carry the work. Wrong. You carry the day and you carry the night. God has given you two twilights, 4 to 7 in the morning and 4 to 7 in the evening."
To practice (once again, this should be at twilight): Sit in Easy Pose (cross legged). Lock your hands in Bear Grip (fingers of each hand held close together and hooked with the arms out in a horizontal fashion) at the Heart Center. Right palm faces inward, left palm faces outward. Eyes are at the tip of the nose. Begin to rock the body forward about 4-6 inches, and then back to the center. This is a slow continuous, fluid movement. Move forward and back about 8 times per 10 seconds. Let the body move by itself. Do not apply physical muscle. Chant the mantra, Har, each time you move forward. Chant in the following manner: Turn the tip of the tongue back so it strikes the upper pallet each time you chant. The word comes out sounding more like "Hu(d)-uh" Generate the sound of the mantra from the center of the mouth. Har is one of the aspects of God - the Creative Infinity. Continue for 11 minutes. To finish: Inhale, suspend the breath for 20 seconds, and then pull on the bear grip with all the power in your hands, so the energy can be displaced to every part and fiber of the body. Repeat two more times.
Picture of the bear grip mudra
I hope people will find this meditation useful.
meditation and ACTION
we really need to be thinking of constructive ways of dealing with this situation (which as the always astute M Lazard points out, will probably not be the end of civilization as we know it - yet). i don't think that other people's dreams predict the future so much as they illustrate a collective anxiety that, without some clear analysis, may actually cause us to bring all this bullshit upon ourselves. i don't think we should be cheering on the collapse just yet. we need to prepare, to get practical about this, to create a coherent and effective alternative in the time we have left. meditation is a good thing to do at 6 in the morning. maybe we could then, calmly and mindfully, do something constructive and tangible and active with the rest of our day.
ps.To those of you watching the skies, the spaceship ISN'T coming. It just isn't - I channeled that information from my own rational mind.
Action can be yogic
All of this mystery/fear blogging is turning into a strange loop
A few weeks ago, I read about the Oct 14th UFO and the Arlington Institute (which also speaks of the UFO scenario) on Reality Sandwhich. Those posts affected me deeply, and so I blogged on my blog about the relationship between fear, mystery, and the false idea...
So you all inspired me to write something there, and now perhaps I can share with you what you all helped me with a few weeks back, because maybe some of you need some help now too.
So here goes...
In my personal life, I awake every day this month very unsure if my business will exist in just a few short weeks. Being a father to a three year old child and having to provide financial security for another human being, that certainly creates plenty of uncertainty and at times anxiety.
In addition, I turn on CNN or surf through Digg, Reddit, and the Huffington Post, searching out articles, opinions, and blogs on our current state of affairs with the election, economy, and the war. There are wars, and rumors of more wars, end of the world scenarios, talks of the second great depression, and all sorts of apocalyptic end of the world ideas that are being fed to us virally via online news sources.
It is very slowly dawning on civilization at this time that mystery, or uncertainty, unknown, or what ever you wish to call this third truth value, is a very real yet very uncomfortable notion to be comfortable with.

.The Apocalypse with a Grain of Salt
Forty years ago, I saw the end of the world coming as clearly as I see it today. I was as ready as I am as I type this. I've been ready. So I tend to take all these scenarios with a grain of salt. Yes, it's all happening, but chances are, not as a good movie with a build-up to a climax. You can take events from different places and times and edit them together to make a good apocalypse trailer, but if you are an individual living in one place, one day at a time, you might end up experiencing the end of the world as a regular day at the office. When I talk to people who have lived through great historical upheavals, they all tend to make this same point. History books and prophecies are like good movies -- they compress and organize the action for the sake of narrative flow and tension.
Marc
good point
That's an interesting suggestion. One might wonder to what extent this sense of 'drama' actually is involved in 'world events'. To what extent is the 'drama' of the 'stock market' just jejune and ignorant-of-such psychological formatting just 'traders' living an internal 'script'?
Creation of 'reality' following an internal sense of timing and pause and dramatic effect?
In fact, it would seem wise to have some method of evaluating 'traders' both as to motive and sophistication of such before letting them on the floor.
It might be interesting to investigate the concept of 'evolution' amongst such beings with their little pencils and frantic behavior and loud-mouthed and visually rediculous behavior as anyone can see in the little-oft view of the 'floor'. It is chaotic and emotional. How anyone can conceive it rational defies imagination. Inefficient, chaotic but most of all DRAMATIC. Adrenalin junkies running the econonomy.
Right! Rational! Right. NOT.
Maybe we allow such to go 'un-herded' just because, we as 'viewers' just enjoy the 'drama' or need the drama.
Reality as writing writ large rather than writing recapitulating reality. Very interesting.
Good point.
My two cents ...
Wow, guys. This seems to run the gamut of possible reactions. Thank you, Marc, for bringing some much needed perspective.
Mr. Mysterio ... Dude ...
I bring you the immortal words of Seneca:
Tales inveniunt, quales colunt
I understand his words this way: The kinds of things people search for, they find.
But you could also read it this way: People discover (or see in the world) things that match the character of their search (or cultivation).
Time to choose what side we are on, darkness or light.

Mis-reading of felix
I can't believe that nobody herein above could see in what felix wrote as mockery. I may be wrong, but I didn't get that that was a real 'alarum'.
I appreciate that kind of disrespect or humor.
C'mon.
If anyone thinks they are prophet and then saying their visions of 'doom and gloom', what's the real purpose of that? That it should come about? Give me a break. It is, when negative, an impetus for us to say "NO" or to change our ways and so avert the danger. Right? Or what?
When enough people hear and enough say 'no', then is that 'prophet' mistaken? Or is the non-realization of the 'doom' just what was intended? So, prophecy on! We are well advised by all visioning and reasoning and warning. Like the age-old advice: forewarned is forarmed. What is that 'arm'? To just accept the 'prophecy'? Hardly. To contradict it. When a prophecy speaks of an evil being done: then that is good since we can stop doing that. If it is just a 'weather prediction' and unrelated to good or bad behavior, it is just that: seeing over the horizon. And we can just say: not!
When people associate mere accident to 'moral' causes after the fact, that is ignorance and prejudice and editing to fit the facts.
When anyone can reason forward from present fact and see present fact as relating to material facts as yet unfolded, then that can be given some respect after the fact.
Not fair if they make 100 'prognostications' and calling a 'one per cent' hit as 'success'.
That is nothing more than 'hit and miss' and can be done by anyone paying attention to trends.
C'mon. We're not machines! Say it all! Mock it all!
Let the information flow.
If anyone wants to compare or investigate propoganda and a 'slanted' environment: check out
www.atlantisrising.com
in their forums.
Compare the fluidity of thought that takes place on RS with that forum or environments. Page after page is filled with 'knowers' of 'it all' and continuous dogmatism or castigation. Back and forth. No evolution.
Page after page of quoting of scriptures and justifying bigotry and much 'moderation' by people obviously not 'neutral'. Amazing. Disgusting to me, yet amazing too.
RS is a treasure. They don't seek 'donations' and have no option for such. I think they should have such an option. A pay-pal button so users can subsidize the workers who make it available.
We're all playing 'pretend'
We play with 'pretend' 'trillions' and 'billions' and 'millions' and these are all just words.
When 'just words' lead real lives being lost and homes being lost and 'flip this house' creates joy? - - - a 'house' a 'home' once owned by a widow or an orphan or veteran results in some imagined 'profit' by some fiend and we don't object or say 'no'?: fiction has created an ugly reality.
Maybe readers here are not aware: cities all across the USA have undergone a movement of predatory developers influencing small-town and large-town and city councils to accede to the idea that 'old folk' or cripples shouldn't live in city centers and so the drive was to drive such out of 'high value foot-space' dwellings and transported to cheap 'elder-care' 'centers' elsewhere. Usually to areas where grocery stores, shops and clothing stores are miles apart rather than blocks apart as is common in 'downtowns'.
This is objectionable in the extreme.
Developers are greedy folk and live as if they had no kin. They only live as if they were ever young and out for all the money RIGHT NOW!
Sharks. Woe.
If the Arizona was set on 'buildable land', we'd have no 'Pearl Harbor' memorial. It'd be rebuilt by now. Just like the World Trade Center tragedy cannot afford to be a 'Memorial'. It is too valuable 'foot space'. Traffic of imaginary 'billions' and 'trillions'.
Homes razed for 'row houses' and 'condos' and widows and orphans and veterans sent off to yonder shanty-towns. Miles from everywhere. Till even farm-land is not justifiable for the sake of 'foot space per dollar'.
Minor crimes punished with prison and prison far from mother and kin so visitation is unlikely. 'Unreasonable punishment' rendered acceptable: by imaginary dollar.
And this is 'justice'? This is 'right-use-ness'?
God-forbid: this is 'lovingkindness'?
And people say what? Not 'no'. Just: 'glad that didn't happen to me or mine'?
Really?
And if it happened to another, and you only don't object because not 'yers', you feel safe?
You feel safe?
And when such approach your parents, their home, your kin? And you think 'business' will help you? And 'government' is on 'yer back'? Who is your defender? What medium does lovingkindness use to protect you and yours? Business? Developers? Walmart?
And you don't say 'no' now because . . . ? <
Stock market should actually be worse
Who is buying? I read a little blip in the WSJ a couple weeks ago, China has been buying large chunks of stock to prop up the markets. This was explicitly stated. And they are not the only ones. Volatility at an all-time high, you will definitely see big losses this week.
Yes, this is vindicating for those of us who despise capitalism, but this was planned by the banking elite who have already extricated themselves from harm's way. What they plan to do is "save" us by instituting their order, or ETs will show themselves and say "we can help you humans. listen to us." However, the Heavenly Host is here, far outnumbering the negatives. Their plans will not go as desired.
There will be no third-dimensional human consciousness on Earth after 2012. It is important that the ruling elite know this, so that they know their plans are in vain. The New Jerusalem is not of this earth. Those who need to will go to other afflicted planets for continuing education. This form of consciousness is a mistake, and has been nothing but a disaster from day one. It is Lucifer's fault, but even Lucifer (who incarnated in the person of Gurdjieff and inadvertently caused the Russian Revolution just by his presence) had a much higher ethical code than the Draconians (reptilians) who followed him. They were afflicted from a previous regression, and carried his new-fangled policies to insane levels. They have no emotion, no conscience. They are all mental. Look at the grays. *But even a few grays are incarnating as humans, taking on large karmic and emotional burdens to readjust themselves. So **THERE IS HOPE FOR YOU CRAZY FUCKS**
Even Gurdjieff (who was a crazy bastard) had contempt for money. I could go on and on about the problems of this form of consciousness, but the results speak for themselves. None of this was commissioned by God.
