The McShutdown

mcds-closed_large.jpg

On September 15, 2007 all 85 McDonald’s stores in Manhattan were temporarily shut down by Steve Lambert and friends using simple handwritten signs.

The project was initially developed at Eyebeam and is an example of how networks of ordinary people can step up and shut down greasy giants.

The prank's organizers also held a mock press conference where a fake Ronald McDonald, played by L.M. Bogad of the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army, undergoes an existential crisis realizing that "there's something wrong with fastfood." Check out the video here.

Definitely see the video. (I couldn't find the original Google embed code; if I could, I'd add the video to the post above...) It's wonderful to see Ronald McDonald make a public confession about how his company pushes garbage food on unsuspecting children. This is a brilliant street theater campaign that takes Rev. Billy's Starbucks protests one step further, using the Billionaires for Bush distributed organization model. The purpose is to give local groups the tools to take independent actions across the country. Their website acts as a "action center" where you can see how you too can do a McD's shutdown in your town. And you can download sample scripts, which can then be remixed as local conditions require. It's a sweet, do-it-yourself viral theater activism campaign. Not to mention a fun way to stir shit up with friends one weekend.

Hahahahaha!

That is just freakin' brilliant!

PURE BRILLIANCE what fun.
