Mayan Elder Insists 2012 Isn't End of the World

Apolinario Chile Pixtun, a Guatemalan Mayan Elder, says the doomsday theories surrounding 2012 spring from Western, not Mayan ideas. He's tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly "running out" and claims that it's not the end of the world. He and other Mayans report that such ideas have little to no traction in their community, where there are currently more pressing concerns--such as the amount of rainfall in the region.
According to a recent AP article, the frustration of contemporary Mayans is shared by many archaeologists and astronomers "who say the only thing likely to hit Earth is a meteor shower of New Age philosophy, pop astronomy, Internet doomsday rumors and TV specials such as one on the History Channel which mixes 'predictions' from Nostradamus and the Mayas and asks: 'Is 2012 the year the cosmic clock finally winds down to zero days, zero hope?'"
While the idea of a destructive apocalypse is derided, the article goes on to point out the many links between archeological evidence and astronomical predictions that supports the idea that something major is due to happen on or around the date of December 21, 2012. The article also refers to the author John Major Jenkins who has researched the 2012 prophecy for over two decades and argues that we should honor the date designated by the Mayans, not because it will be the end of the world, but because it will usher in a time of "transformation and renewal."

The Age of Transformation and Renewal

I like to think of it as a Golden Dark Age. I believe we should--- Listen to the Elders.
As well, there should be music to usher this era in.
We should celebrate with the Muse

the satellite mind
psychedelic imagineer/pioneer artist Alex Grey could visualize the art expression for all of us to ponder.

What would be really cool is if all the above bands each created an example of their artistic interpretation of a matrifocal healing vibrational song then burned it to a dvd/ cd/digital itunes format, involve all the social networks then, up to the satellite mind, to saturate the Global Mind, and just in time for the Holiday season, a new take on an old theme, and it would be great if everyone could afford a copy.
Seems to be alot of talented people everywhere making contributions on a local level with universally postive results.

Great site. The sacred Tree. I remember reading about the Goddess Asherah in my studies.

Not to worry
I'm sure there plenty of other doomsday theories just waiting their turn.

We all need to insist this as well.
All bridges can be rebuilt.
perhaps it's time to reconsider
While I think it's truly wonderful that folks are looking forward to some kind of massive transformation of consciousness, maybe it's time to consider that 2012 is likely to be another Harmonic Convergence in terms of explicit effect on human existence. While the sheer absence of critical thinking around these issues is vexing, perhaps there is a net gain in terms of getting folks to ponder their own personal development in a way they might not of before.
None of us really knows what's going to happen, but due to the lack of any historical precedent, I'm not expecting much more than another apocalyptic prediction gone bust.

Go for a Walk, what do you SEE?
thanks highryder
i so much agree. And it might sound as a bit of a ridiculous idea but I have it also when I see als these all yoghurts and desserts in the supermarkets. Years ago one could buy a liter or half a liter. Now all you can buy (I live in France) is packages of 4 individual portions... and these 4 or more portions again are attached with again another packaging around then.
My worsed concern is ofcourse the tremendes pollution, spoiled energy and materials BUT what to think of all those jobs...
If you would calculate how many peoples have their jobs around all this unneededness.
The designers of the packaging of plastic and paper, the people working at the machines of the plastic packaging, the people working to print the packaging paper, the people working on the machine of the tin foil. Ect, ect, ect.
For the most it all has to do with being more 'beautiful' and attractive than the neighbour yoghurt. Duality and rivalry is everywhere.
Our economy is insane.
2012 is belief, 2011 is fact
The same article that quotes a Mayan elder on the need to stay calm fails to mention the actual calendar date supported by the Mayan elders. The 2012 date popularized by John Major Jenkins and Jose Arguelles is wrong, plain and simple. Anyone who does more than a superficial investigation of the astronomical predictions of 2012 will find the same (I won't list the flaws here, check out any good skeptic's analysis).
The correct end date of the Mayan calendar is October 28, 2011. This is based on the actual inscriptions at Palenque concerning the evolution of the World Tree--NOT on astronomical observations that Westerners have projected on to the calendar. The interpretation of the Mayan calendar by Carl Johan Calleman and Ian Xel Lungold desperately need to start reaching public consciousness. 2012 is bunk if not disinformation.
I urge readers to check out Calleman's site, for example the article "The Risks of Believing That The Mayan Calendar Ends December 21, 2012". Also check out this interview with Mayan elder Don Alejandro. Both are linked to below. The elegance of this model, which is about the evolution of Time and Consciousness rather than doomsday, should resonate with everyone who hasn't invested too much of their ego in 2012.

the world of duality
Did we as a western 'civilization' ever understand other cultures their rituals, believes and behaviors..??! The european catholics robbed the gold of the Mayans to use as money to finance the crusades and to dress up their churches. They didn't have a notion about the meaning of gold the way it had to the Mayans. They couldn't because they were not able to level with them. They only way they could see the world was out of their cultural conditioned, godfearing background.
A hole culture was destroyed. Even if maybe today we would have been able to grasp a little something of their outstanding profound astrological knowledge, it is a quit difficult to research for all so much of the knowledge is burned and destroyed.
We the western people of today are so not aware that life goes in cycles and we're not familiar with the fenomen that cycles end ( as inherent to a cycle aswell a restarting..).
As we're not used to think in cycles so does end equal death.
The only celestial cycle western european people are aware of is the cycle of the sun, our -year-. But if you would ask people in the street what fase of the moon we are today than 90% will have no clue at all. The moon doesn't excist in our day to day life.
The western european are totally out of knowing to see life as cycles-in-cycles(in-cycles..).The only thing we measure time by and so live by is the Gregorian calendar and the clock.
That we live in a time where all kinds of life dangered events are around the corner is obvious to a lot of us. It's in the air so to say. We could express that as 5 to 12.
That the humanspecies or a big part of them might face death in near future wouldn't be a very big surprise to a lot of us. Fearfull maybe but not unimaginable.
The 'funny' thing about it is that we are so arrogant that the idea of us as a species becoming extinct is in our perception equivalent to the end of the life on this planet.. I guess the ancient Mayan lived very according the way of the Tao. As the Tao states All changes nothing stays the same all is movement.

For so long I question why do intelligent people argue so much over if it is 2011 or 2012 that this 26.000 sun year cycle ends and restarts..? Just for the sake of continuing the world of duality untill 'the end'..??!
The world IS duality
"Just for the sake of continuing the world of duality"
To posit that the nondual exists as some kind of opposite of duality is a huge error in thinking, one that only leads to occlusion (read: a blocking) of our own nondual awareness as it shines in us right now.
The world will always be dual, the nondual is always right here, right now. This will not change. The world will go on, and the nondual will ever be. To expect some kind of transition from dual to nondual will only lead to a continuation of ignorance about the nondual, and perhaps a grand disappointment when the fantasy of 2012 comes crashing down on the alloted date.
2012 planetary alignments and transitions
2012
I definitely think something interesting is going to happen between the dates of October 28, 2011 as the beginning, with December 21, 2012 as some sort of mid-point, and March 28, 2013 (another key date that I have read about) when it will become more clear what to expect. I hope this is a period of transformation and renewal.
However, I think that a lot of people who walk around unaware and in a daze will become the playthings of the Universe and those of us who are aware something is going to happen around this time may have a better chance of surviving what may come, for good or bad.
There is an old saying, "Bad news is good news to the prepared."

why would Don Alejandro tell different people different things?
I was not aware of this. Will check out Drunvalo's video, with a healthy dose of skepsis though cuz I don't have the greatest impression of him.
Thanks
Straight from the Horse's Mouth
Just watched Drunvalo's video. I find it very hard to believe that he speaks for the Mayans. He is talking about a doomsday, while the video I linked to shows Don Alejandro, Mayan elder, telling people to stay calm and unafraid because it will be just like passing into a new year after our calendar ends. Who do you believe is speaking for the Mayans?
Personally I have known about '2012' for almost seven years. Eventually I lost interest as I discovered that it was all based on wrong interpretation of Maya inscriptions and mythology, bad astronomy, and wishful thinking. Until I ran into C.J. Calleman's work, which turned me around completely. The idea that the Mayan calendar is based on the shifting energies or quantum states of Time/Consciousness makes much more sense than trying to pin it on fanciful alignments.
Finally, Calleman's model actually allowed him to make predictions based on the calendar. Predictions that have unequivocally come true.
star dances
They came from an exploding star called 'Hope'...They came to Earth in 1054..
They were the first kachinas..spirit beings who taught star dances...
The Hopi from Hope have danced these star dances for Earth..and the Hopi say 'the end of {time} is coming'....

Maya perspectives on 2012
Thank You! Voice of Reason, which is absent from 2012 theories
It seems that a lot of people have forgotten their history. The 2012 theories were, always have been, and will remain BUNK for some time.
How many times was the end of the world prophesied by Christians, only for it to not come true? It was going to happen in 2000, and computers were also supposed to crash - didn't happen. And it looks like Apophis won't be hitting anytime soon either. Astrophysicists - NB: physics (that means science!) and not astrology - have pointed out, repeatedly, that the kind of star that we orbit will cease fusing hydrogen when the hydrogen content of our sun will be depleted and begin fusing helium, which will cause it to burn at a different temperature but also expand to point of engulfing the Earth, along with Mercury, Venus, and likely Mars. (If it doesn't, it will hardly matter - nothing will live there anyway.) This will occur in about a billion years, give or take. And if that doesn't do the trick - the Andromeda galaxy is on a collision course with our own. And if that STILL doesn't take the trick, there is that whole universal heat death thing to contend with. It turns out that we have some very fine people in universities (institutions of higher learning) that have been going over this stuff for a really long time - and have a pretty good track record with it. There's the end of the world for ya.
