The Kogi's Big Screen Warning

KOGI.jpg

In 1988 a BBC documentary filmmaker named Alan Ereira visited the homeland of the Kogi, one of the last surviving and most intact South American cultures remaining from the Spanish conquests. Residing on a towering mountain off the Caribbean coast of Colombia, the Kogi have carried on their indigenous traditions and profound spirituality in isolation from modern civilization for more than a thousand years. Ereira’s historic film Heart of the Earth introduced the “lost” tribe with an urgent message to their “Younger Brothers” around the world: change your destructive ways and learn to live in harmony with the earth.

Twenty years later, the Kogi are worried their warning has gone unheeded. Keenly aware that the most effective way to win modern hearts and minds is through the silver screen, the tribe has taken on a remarkable project. They have sent emissaries down from the mountain to learn Spanish and train to use video equipment to make their own movie. With Ereira’s assistance, the Kogi are producing a documentary film called Aluna, the title referring to the mystical essence of Kogi consciousness. By opening up their sacred world and understanding to the masses, they hope to convey the chaotic forces being released through our rapacious plundering and devastation of the planet.

The Kogi are deeply concerned that the ecological crisis we are facing has reached a critical point, with the survival of mankind hanging perilously in the balance. Aluna is their latest dispatch from the heart of the Earth, a real-life version of Avatar for our own besieged Gaia-sphere. Let’s hope we get the message this time.

Join Reality Sandwich editorial director Daniel Pinchbeck for Message from the Heart of the Earth, an extraordinary journey into the hidden world of the Kogi, from March 26 to April 2. This unique seven-day shamanic retreat combines two powerful Colombian medicine traditions: the Kogi spiritual masters
of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Northern Colombia, and the plant
medicine ceremonies of the deepest Amazon.

This is so important

If there are any available ways to support their message besides word of mouth, which I have been doing already, I would love to know and help. The Kogi are amazing and help show the contrast between the intelligence of us in the industrialized world and those still in harmony with the world.

In the beginning, there was blackness

In the beginning, there was blackness. Only the sea. In the beginning there was no sun, no moon, no people.  In the beginning there were no animals, no plants. Only the sea. The sea was the Mother. The Mother was not people, she was not anything.  Nothing at all. She was when she was, spirit. She was memory and possibility. She was aluna

Something to think about...

The Kogi aren't very egalitarian. Women are generally considered inferior to men, and are said to have the minds of children. Women are not allowed in the most sacred hut where the men philosophize, are rarely priests, and cannot eat from the sacred pipe seen pictured. I cannot get past how important it is to involve both genders (both halves) especially in this time of huge change and potential.... Doubtless, the Kogi have a lot of amazing things to say, but it's good to remember that we are all in a state of learning, and the Kogi are, too.

women

I'm surprised not more people have commented on this, and I find it common to gloss over this kind of gross injustice when we believe that a culture holds some secret knowledge that we don't have. Perhaps the Kogi need a courageous Eve to taste the fruit of knowledge and bring them into the world of equality. Let's hope that illusion of theirs gets shattered.  Can any woman really place much hope in a culture that would to keep them as invalids, unqualified to speak to God?  Really, some powerful women need to bust that BS right open.

more troubling stuff on the kogi realities for women

can be found here: http://tairona.myzen.co.uk/index.php/culture/women_in_kogi_society/ "If the woman leaves her husband, it will always be to enter into a new relationship - and men appear to have little trouble finding a new bride. But for an abandoned wife the problems are very serious." This culture that claims to care so much about the future of the planet in fact seems to care very little for the fate of its human mothers, and will leave them to suffer because of rigid gender roles. I wonder if the director would be so progressive as to deliver a message back to the Kogi that women are not second class members of humanity.

I had no idea about the

I had no idea about the Kogis residing in the Caribbean coast of Colombia and this was a really enlightening read for me. I was disappointed that the video along with the post was taken out but watched the link which was given by someone and was really amazed by what I saw!! Do tourists go there? I am sure it is still an unspoilt by people like us!! I hope that the documentary movie Aluna helps the Kogis to live in peace to follow their traditional and spiritual life!!

You folks have no idea

Women rule the house, the domestic arena; men have an exclusive domain in the public arena, the ceremonial house. That is not to say that women have no say in public affairs; there are many stories of lengthy debates in the ceremonial house, lasting several nights, at the end of which a decision is reached on how to deal with some community problem. Then the men go home, tell their wives what has been decided, and the following day they reconvene somewhat shame-faced and agree a different solution. But in principle, it is the men who decide. That is just a slice of how much respect they have for woman. Wow, those on here who say that woman are inequal in their society, you are so undereducated you shouldn't speak. There whole society is based on the PERFECT balance of feminine/masculine in EVERYTHING they do must have both aspects in perfect balance. The Mother told us that we should always be in agreement with women, that we should treat women well because it was women, the Mother, who gave us all things ... At first the Mother gave advice to men. She lectured them. That’s why when women talk to us we have to look down at their feet. We shouldn’t look at the Mother’s face. What amazing respect, that's just the start. I have met three Kogi, have you!? doubt it. They only told us about how sacred the females are. Seriously, I actually had to log in to register to tell ya'll this. No words to describe what a shame you should feel. You know who you are.
