Invisible Cloaking Devices!

invisible_man.jpg

What changes might happen in the fashion world should the development of invisible cloaking devices make their way into the hands of fabric or textile design gurus?

Research from Duke University shows that the technology might not be far off. The possibilities for metaphor or analogy seem endless. The cloaking technology is said to utilize “meta-materials” fashioned in concentric circles with “internal structural variation.” The idea is to lend properties of empty space across the surface of matter. The cloaking device reduces both an object’s reflection and its shadow.

Should we imagine cloaking devices embedded in clothing that will mask our body indexes? Will the obese find cloaking devices for their stomachs? Could we find cloaking patches to hide a tattoo before a job interview?

Do we have the courage, as we develop things like technological cloaking devices, as images and metaphors begin to blur, to also develop personal/cultural transparency? If we are working to hide the shadows and reflections of things we do not want to be seen, then it may be equally paramount to accept the responsibility of making radiant that which cannot.

invisible

I don't know how long it would be legal for any random joe to be invisible whenever/wherever they want. I'm a good guy, but the first things I thought of were the new possiblities that one would have while being invisible, like easy robbery and thievery... or even peeping on the local hotties while they change!! Hey- I wouldn't do it, but imagine how many would. I have a feeling invisibility will be a seriously secured ability! I hope to learn how to become invisible without any special clothes. :)
