The Intentional Economy
While exploring shamanism and non-ordinary states, I discovered the power of intention. According to the artist Ian Lungold, who lectured brilliantly about the Mayan Calendar before his untimely death a few years ago, the Maya believe that your intention is as essential to your ability to navigate reality as your position in time and space. If you don't know your intention, or if you are operating with the wrong intentions, you are always lost, and can only get more dissolute.
This idea becomes exquisitely clear during psychedelic journeys, when your state of mind gets intensified and projected kaleidoscopically all around you. As our contemporary world becomes more and more psychedelic, we are receiving harsh lessons in the power of intention on a vast scale. Over the last decades, the international financial elite manipulated the markets to create obscene rewards for themselves at the expense of poor and middle class people across the world. Using devious derivatives, cunning CDOS, and other trickery, they siphoned off ever-larger portions of the surplus value created by the producers of real goods and services, contriving a debt-based economy that had to fall apart. Their own greed -- such a meager, dull intent -- has now blown up in their faces, annihilating, in slow motion, the corrupt system built to serve them.
Opportunities such as this one don't come along very often and should be seized once they appear. When the edifice of mainstream society suddenly collapses, as is happening now, it is a fantastic time for artists, visionaries, mad scientists and seers to step forward and present a well-defined alternative. What is required, in my opinion, is not some moderate proposal or incremental change, but a complete shift in values and goals, making a polar reversal of our society's basic paradigm. If our consumer-based, materialism-driven model of society is dissolving, what can we offer in its place? Why not begin with the most elevated intentions? Why not offer the most imaginatively fabulous systemic redesign?
The fall of capitalism and the crisis of the biosphere could induce mass despair and misery, or they could impel the creative adaptation and conscious evolution of the human species. We could attain a new level of wisdom and build a compassionate global society in which resources are shared equitably while we devote ourselves to protecting threatened species and repairing damaged ecosystems. Considering the lightning-like pace of global communication and new social technologies, this change could happen with extraordinary speed.
To a very great extent, the possibilities we choose to realize in the future will be a result of our individual and collective intention. For instance, if we maintain a Puritanical belief that work is somehow good in and of itself, then we will keep striving to create a society of full employment, even if those jobs become "green collar." A more radical viewpoint perceives most labor as something that could become essentially voluntary in the future. The proper use of technology could allow us to transition to a post-scarcity leisure society, where the global populace spends its time growing food, building community, making art, making love, learning new skills and deepening self-development through spiritual disciplines such as yoga, tantra, shamanism and meditation.
One common perspective is that the West and Islam are engaged in an intractable conflict of civilizations, where the hatred and terrorism can only get worse. Another viewpoint could envision the Judeo-Christian culture of the West finding common ground and reconciling with the esoteric core, the metaphysical purity, of the Islamic faith. It seems -- to me anyway -- that we could find solutions to all of the seemingly intractable problems of our time once we are ready to apply a different mindset to them. As Einstein and others have noted, we don't solve problems through employing the type of thinking that created them, but rather dissolve them when we reach a different level of consciousness.
We became so mired in our all-too-human world that we lost touch with the other, elder forms of sentience all around us. Along with delegates to the UN, perhaps we could train cadres of diplomats to negotiate with the vegetal, fungal and microbial entities that sustain life on earth? The mycologist Paul Stamets proposes we create a symbiosis with mushrooms to detoxify eco-systems and improve human health. The herbalist Morgan Brent believes psychoactive flora like ayahuasca and peyote are "teacher plants," sentient emissaries from super-intelligent nature, trying to help the human species find its niche in the greater community of life. When we pull back to study the hapless and shameful activity of our species across the earth, these ideas do not seem very farfetched.
In fact, the breakdown of our financial system has not altered the amount of tangible resources available on our planet. Rather than trying to re-jigger an unjust debt-based system that artificially maintains inequity and scarcity, we could make a new start. We could develop a different intention for what we are supposed to be doing together on this swiftly tilting planet, and institute new social and economic infrastructure to support that intent.

transition town
i continue to recommend the UK Transition Town model as one good jumping-off place for considering how to organize local communities. The Transition Town Handbook is a great read. There's good material on-line also.

I'm actually going to a transition training program in Ann Arbor, MI at the end of the month. Google Transition US. There's quite a few things started here. I'm working on organizing a portion of Detroit over the coming years. We have so much unused greenspace in this city. We at the Detroit Evolution Laboratory feel that considering all of the damage that has been exported from this city, we could using similar channels, export transformation and sustainability.

...reinforcing my thoughts with synchronous articles and comments. :)
I've been mulling this whole thing over very extensively lately. And, as I consider the situation, as I explore the possibilities inherent in this "shift", my thoughts and intentions are reflected back at me. It's nice to notice the synchronicities that occur when operating on this wavelength.
As I question something, I'm greeted with thought-provoking mirrors in articles, books I'm reading, people I talk to, etc. Certainly as one directs his/her inent toward some area of thought, the Universe responds in kind. An exchange that continues to build. It's clear that a certain direction or momentum, an intent toward some specific direction, is building and pushing us further along the path.
But how does it manifest?
While I've been exploring and envisioning this coming change to our way of life, the question I continue to come back to is... What do I DO?
I mean, what exactly are the first baby steps needed to get something going? Is focusing on myself (my own spirituality/consciousness, my own recycling and energy-use habits, growing my own food in my backyard, etc) enough? Or is there some higher CALL that should be sounded for those of us who see this change coming but don't know exactly what to do to usher in a benevolent new culture of exchange and community as opposed to the alternative of collapse?
So, RS Community... What does the individual do in his own community or his own way to help usher in a positive change over a negative fallout? With intentions clear... Where does one start?
bring people together
why don't you start by bringing people together to have an intentional discussion on the issues, perhaps screen "The End of Suburbia" or "Zeitgeist Addendum" or "11th Hour"? you could then discuss how we can't expect government to solve problems, so it is up to people to regain their will to make changes.
"Will the transformation."-Rilke
Brilliant and to the point
Another inspiring and well-crafted article, Daniel. However, some readers (presumably from places other than RS) may take it as a rationalization for them to do nothing, but "intend for the best". A more drastic call to action is necessary to mobilize the conscious public. All inhabitants of this planet need to wake up to their higher purpose and unite as a single, codependent organism.
I believe the first step would involve uniting our own species with itself. Step one of this process would be making intentional attempts at informing and uplifting the public. The common tendency of people remain ignorant must be shattered. People can't afford to pretend like there isn't a problem. If we let things slide, there will be catastrophic environmental disasters, country-wide food riots, and daily trains headed for government-funded prison camps before people admit that there may be something wrong with the system. Most people I know insist that the economy will get better on its own, or that Barack OBEYma's stimulus plan and energy program will fix everything. They won't. In fact, if I've read his stated policies correctly, they will make things much, much worse.
The most important lesson to pass on I believe is that our monetary system is a complete lie and a scam. Tell people that their money is created solely out of debt, by a power-hungry world banking conglomerate. Try to inspire them with ideas of a resource-based economy, one like the short-lived "Bank of Texas" proposed by the currently imprisoned Johnathan May.
I would also suggest that we insist that the attacks of 9/11 were orchestrated by entities within our own ruling body. The list of things wrong in the narrative we've been fed since 2001 is reaching absurdity. The evidence is incontrovertible, and I think we should let people know as much as possible before the next false-flag terror strike abolishes more of our legal freedoms permanently.
The thing is, though, whenever I get in serious conversations with people about the depth of the conspiracies against the people of this country, they are either infuriated that I would suggest that their world is anything but perfect, or they just outright reject me. I think a conscious newsletter may be a better approach towards informing the public. Something pleasant to look at and freely distributed, because otherwise people will just go watch another TV show.
Of course, I'm open to any other suggestions...
The Party of Principle
http://www.lp.org/blogs/andrew-davis/keynesian-economics-explained
The only way out is in. We should focus our actions on getting the right people with the right principles in goverment. Both political parties have become hybrids of each other. Both parties are being manipulated by the "special interests groups" Both parties are selling out or buying into the NWO. Most of you already know this to be true. Join the Libertarian party or start your own political party. The biggest and the most urgent threat attacking your freedoms and your intentions to help this planet heal is big brother. The road to hell was paved with good intentions...
The Nagging Question
Wonderful article, and so far a wonderful discussion.
The annoyingly persistent question of "HOW" we evoke this change in the economic/social/political paradigm is always right around the corner when talking about these issues. I find myself constantly facing it, and often times retreating in frustration.
This spring I am starting a student-led film series at the University of Vermont, where I am a student. The film series is aimed at promoting dialog between professors and students, and between students and other students, about the various issues facing our country, species, and civilization. My intention is to awaken more young people to the state of our society, and in turn, realize their own divine nature. The first film I plan to show is "Zeitgeist," seeing as how this film inspired me to do this. I also plan to show "Baraka," "The Corporation," "King of Corn," and possibly "Koyanisqaatzi." I don't want to scare people by showing them these films, I simply want to awaken them to our society's situation, and to their own power as a free-thinking human being. Suggestions from the RS community would be greatly appreciated!
Sometimes bringing up a "touchy" issue like 9/11 being a false flag operation can turn a lot of people off, especially those who havent questioned that possibility yet. My view is that instead of bombarding them with your own feelings and intentions (which I find myself doing all the time,) you should show them a well crafted piece of art or writing, such as a film or book, that adresses these questions in a manner that they may be able to process better. "Zeitgeist," and Pinchbeck's "2012" are personal favorites.
Organizing this has been an outlet for me in terms of manifesting my desire for change. My advice to others is to find a medium which speaks to you (mine is film,) and through this, try and evoke change with positive and clear intent. Tap into your community, cybernetic or physical, and spread these ideas! Humans are social creatures, so it makes sense that external validation is needed when trying to promote new ideas and perceptions.
Reality Sandwich itself is a wonderful manifestation of this progress and positive intent, and I know will continue to be in the future.

I agree with nearly everything stated in this article. And this is a stance I represent, more or less, when I am out in the world, engaged with other people.I deal with the friction of resistance and hence view this as the struggle. And I'm cool with it. But it's still a struggle.
This feels like an essential aspect to all this.To quote a cool clothing line, 'Trust Your Struggle'
I'm down with setting big intentions. The real work comes into by getting up everyday and trying to make that happen.
That's the Great Work, as far I'm concerned.
Who wants to write, produce and star in their own COSMIC DRAMA?
It's only our creativity to see differently that will change conciousness. Your state of mind gets intensified and opens up awareness on psycadelics. Your imagination runs wild. You consider that you're the one creating the projections; you're the creator, the one who writes the cosmic drama as well as the actor with the lead role.
Awareness of your power to create is the first step. Your mind is projected everywhere - it's a mirror - when you are finally aware, you'll realize you've been staring at yourself the whole time, smiling back at you everywhere, with a grin that says that everything, including your part in the divine play, is exactly perfect the way it is. This is what peace is.
To rejoin with the cosmic creative force, and come around, back into limitless potential from where we started, is our journey. Deep down our greatest "intention" is to grow to a new level of awareness, and behind the scenes we've orchestrated this vast project to erect all the challenges we face, that will help us grow. Our final struggle is to give it all up. Give up every bit of separation between you and the divine. Give up trying to force your model on the world - give up pretending you're the actor, re-acting to external forces and instead give in to your truest godly nature that blissfully watches the unfolding.
Realize that you are the one staring through the telescope looking at the mirror. You've spent thousands of years peering through it, trying to make sense of it all, to see the truth, the light...now you've given up, and taken the telescope away from your eye and immediately have found that what you were looking for deep in the cosmos, is yourself, the essence of pure potentiality, same as it has always been, just now you see it.
When the seeer becomes the seen (scene?!) consciousness is transformed.
Finger on the pulse of the collective heartbeat
what can I do?
Its hard. I try to make as much of a difference as I can while still living marginally in the parameters of what is socially acceptable. I know that is wrong but I am only 17 and it seems like that is all I can do at this point in my life.
It is really discouraging to see how invested people in my age group already are in the materialistic, dominator, close-minded society we live in. I don't have a drivers licence, and I don't ever want a car. Some people think of me as childish. When some people call me an idealist all I can say back is that the culture we live in is merely an idea, it's just not a very good one.
I don't mean to ramble on about myself but it seems that most people reading or posting on here are older. By that I mean at least out of high school. I just want to bring in another point of view from a different walk of life.
Conformity (I really don't like to use that word) is what is expected of you. But what if you see through what you are told to conform to? What seems to be the problem is that people can't see how messed up things are. They don't have a problem with what we are doing. I mean some do, but it's all they've known and/or they just don't care.
If everyone were exposed to some sort of teaching natural hallucinogen then we might have a fighting chance. Obviously, This would never happen. Some people just can't "check out" of modern society. they just won't be able to. It's really sad, we are drowning in our own stupidity. Hopefully as things get worse, more people will see how our current mindset isn't natural or healthy for us, spiritually and physically, or for the living planet.
I can't wait for things to change, because there is no way I am going to be able to be happy in this world of suppression and small mindedness. I just can't. I'm barely making it through high school, even though I am more intellectually mature than most people my age. I just can't do it. Deep down it feels like I'm somehow selling myself out. I'm not learning anything profound or meaningful. High school is a crash course meant to prepare you for a life of toil and monotony. Ideally.
Its hard not to feel trapped. We need a change!
apples to apples
I know exactly how you feel, being on the cusp of adulthood myself, I sometimes feel like my life is becoming stagnant. We've grown out of immaturity but are not yet recognized or treated with the same respect that "adults" are. The best advice I can give, the same advice im following, is to realize your own strengths and abilities and use them to inspire change. Even if all you happen to be interested in is something seemingly unrelated, like biking, there is still much you could do to create change. Talk to those interested in the same things as you, draw parralels between your activity and the change that needs to happen.
I don't consider myself a great writer, but I know I do have some skill. Recently, I have been considereing creating some sort of pamphlet or brochure that logically relates the issues our society faces to things other teenagers like us might be experiencing. Something like this, though it may not seem like much, might be just enough to get a few students thinking, and even if you only get through to one person, you have made a difference. After all, if this person inspires one more, then another, then another, soon enough everyone will have something to say.
This is only one example, but you can see how a little bit of effort could really go a long way. Get out there and get involved, even if all you do is make a conscientious effort to talk to more people about issues you feel are important. It seems harder in high school, but its not. You have access to a larger and more malleable peer group than most others on Reality Sandwich, take advantage of this.
I hope that I helped give you an idea to kickstart change in your own community. Remember, you have an entire life ahead of you to make change, use it wisely, and good luck!
to be a tree
I really like that.
When you open your mind and take some sort of teaching hallucinogen, (i just drank a trichocerieus Bridgesii tea not two weeks ago) you see life from the perspective of the trees, the grass, the bushes and the soil from which it all grows. My mind still hasn't returned back to that of a shortsighted human.
Trees are wise. all plants are wise. It seems for being walking, talking, animals, we have given up the spiritual connection with the earth. We are not rooted, we are not wise. The earth can only speak through us for a short period of time, while on a natural pshycedelic. I have realized that the connection is still resdiual after the exhilaratingly foregin knowledge has all but faded from before our eyes.
The real use for hallucinogens are not to see "funny" colours or vivd outlandish images. The real and lasting benefit is the realization that we must reestablish our roots to the earth. spiritually.
we must become like trees. Or we alreday are, but our roots havent gone deep enough.
agreed apples
right on man, I totally know where you are coming from with everything, especially our culture which seems to be stuck in a materialistic commercialist rut. If you are interested in reading more about the importance and knowledge of plants I highly recommend the book: The Lost Language of Plants by Stephen Harrod Buhner. It is an incredible book about our connection to plants and thier hidden knowledge that we have lost in our distancing from nature to more artificial "reality"

All Together Now
~illuuminuus~ myspace.com/illuuminus
We are together in this, visionaries one and all. Let us be together now as we focus all the power of our intention on the transformation we seek... An end to War and Hate and Greed and all such infantile foolishness. Envision in detail a world wherein Peace can be taken for granted, one in which Kindness is coin, and Love permeates, engenders and promulgates everything, universally acknowledged and celebrated as the Quantum Absolute. Let us resolve at last to cast off ignorant and outdated modalities. And hey, let's do it Now. Let's do it right Now! It's time to recreate our world! It's time to recreate ourselves!! It's time...Sing it
As loud and as clear as possible. To all we come in contact with. Every breath we recycle with our plant cohabitants is a vehicle of opportunity for our intentions.
It is incredibly frustrating to sit amongst peers whom we know are equals and almost clairvoyantly see with seemingly perfect clarity the stunning potentiality inherent in just our little tribes. Then, perhaps thanks to a plant teacher or another resource such as the various meditative arts, we can begin to fathom the vast scale of all the combined tribes throughout the world and imagine what the potentiality of such a large organism, utilizing some truly fantastic tools for co-emergence, like the internet, is capable of.
The question that turns up consistently in my travels goes something like: How am I supposed to connect with and nurture a fellow shipmate or even a tribe of fellow shipmates when I'm not in constant or at least frequent physical contact with them? The only solace I have to offer myself with this question is that there is a mindful well intentioned tribe-mate already existing in the aforementioned shipmates day to day life and I need not refocus my attention from my current tribe unless absolutely necessary. I use caution with the idea of absolutes however. 'Absolutely necessary' means death. It's the only absolute I'm familiar with and of course my familiarity is strictly subjective, still breathing and all that. Still recycling.
I find music to be an endless resource for connecting and uniting a tribe. Sing it
Some simple things you can do
I more or less agree with all of the previous commentors. In addition, here are some practical actions one can take right now.
There are several things, simple things, one can do to begin moving towards the New Age. They are all pretty basic.
1. Of course, I wholly recommend a transformative practice of some sort. Transcendental meditation, yoga, a martial art, psychedelic vision-questing, some combination...whatever floats your boat. Realizing and recognizing the Shared Divine in us all goes a long way towards motivating one to change, and to help others do so as well. Every individual to whom the understanding of non-dual unity is revealed acts as a major catalyst in the Akashic Field, it seems likely to me.
2. Go meet your neighbors. If/when this goes down, the people closest to you will be the ones you are most dependent on. Find out who they are now. Make friends with them...or, at least, become more friendly. Perhaps, after a bit -- and if there is interest -- even begin to organize the community with various projects. It is possible...don't be scared: they are just people, too. ^_~ Spend more time in the front lawn, outside of your house, that sort of thing, to get started with. Which leads me to:
3. Plant a garden. Simple, wonderfully satisfying, and a bulwark against a sudden loss of the national supply-chain...or even plain unemployment. It also gives you something invaluable to barter with, should money become worthless. It will be a valuable skill to have if it all goes down. I recommend trying to stay away from chemical fertilizers. Your fruits/veggies won't be as big...but they sure taste better, and you'll be glad you know how to operate without them.
4. At least one day a month, volunteer at a local homeless shelter, soup kitchen, food bank, etc. The feeling you get is amazing, and you get in touch with other persons in your area that are motivated to help usher in change, and help our fellow brethren. People with whom you can make friends, and join forces!
5. If you have the means, donate towards organizations which are looking into new ways of doing things...alternative energy, co-ops, spiritual centers...whatever your personal favorite is.
6. And, of course, continue to study and research new ways of organizing communities, alternative economies, possible solutions to our current/upcoming problems, etc.
I am a big believer in Morpho-Genetic Field resonance theory, the collective unconscious, and the Akashic Field (all of which I believe to be, more or less, the same basic thing).
The more people that are actively engaged in thinking about, meditating on, intentionalizing, and (most important) actuating the arrival of something better; the more powerful that intention becomes in our shared being, the more it in-forms our reality...and the more people will begin to do the same.
Ideally (hopefully), there is a tipping point somewhere. Just do what you can, don't worry about what you can't.

What is 'Metaphysical Whiteness?'
Based on my current research into Islam this term sounds strange.
Thanks will check him out;
either/or...how about both/and??
"The fall of capitalism and the crisis of the biosphere could induce mass despair and misery, or they could impel the creative adaptation and conscious evolution of the human species."
Seems to me like the latter will be catalyzed through a collective experience of the former. Pressure and tension generates form change. We must remember that not everyone lives in 'psychedelic reality sandwich land'. In fact, most people don't. Most people have never even heard of most of the stuff discussed on this website (well, besides History channel addicts who have recently been heavily dosed with 2012). America has been purposefully addicted to sports, tv, shopping, and meat. Yes, many people will be and already are prepared for what is coming. However, in my humble opinion, the vast majority will be pretty fuckin' desperate and miserable when shit hits the fan.
That is why it is up to 'those who know' to become ontological templates (that whole 'being the change you want to see in the world'), creating living social organisms that can be modeled anywhere. Sounds easy, but it will be anything but that. It will, by far, be the hardest thing any of us has ever tried to do, but it is obviously called for by the times. Destruction, pain, agony, and misery are inevitable. We must face our natural aversion to them with courage and inner strength. Karma and destiny are on our side. Body surf the wave!
In speaking about bringing
In speaking about bringing about a more just society that solves problems by thinking differently than the thinking that created the problems, one clear and decisive way that we can begin to achieve this is through socialism.
I know, I know. People are tired of governmental rhetoric. But the concept that socialism stands for could work so well with a society that stands behind the ideals of sharing resources and caring for one another in a more enlightened type of state. Think of a society in which everyone is free to become what they most desire. This is the base message behind socialism, for me. I know that many people worry that socialism is so akin to communism that it can turn to dictatorship, but this is a falsehood pushed by western capitalism.
I believe that the real meat of the issue is actually not what type of governmental system to choose, however, and that the real issue, at least in America, is the inate struggle between freedom and equality. Here, at home, we have to make a choice about these two naturally conflicting concepts that we were founded on. If we want to be more equal, than we must be less free. If we want to be more free, then we must be less equal. This applies most startlingly to the economic situations across the board. If we could crunch the pyramid of the earning power that is currently at work (say, we smush it into more of a rectangle) then the incomes of those at the top are very close to those at the bottom. We are more equal. And we are still free to go and do as we please. But the struggle for this country to decide what the push-pull relationship between these concepts will ultimately be is the one final step that needs to be taken in order for true growth to happen, in my opinion.
Intention
MundoPax
The word in itself has the power to create or destroy. In the documentary The Science and Miracles of Water world renowned scientists have discovered that water has memory. It is capable of storing intentionality. If water is influenced by our intentions and our emotions, then it would be not only possible, but imperative that we focus our intentions on purifying the lifeblood of the planet. Please take the time to watch this documentary and understand its implications. Love and gratitude is all the intentions you ever need and that is what it will take to heal our world. The change that Daniel so eloquently delineates and cogently presents is a beckoning to understand that we have the power. We is nothing more than a bunch of “I”s. By focusing your intentions on love and gratitude the world unveils its gold lining, the infinite stream of bliss. Love and gratitude, do you feel that when you say those words? Imagine what can happen if everyone shared that at once and projected it to our dying planet?this is where it begins, the festivals are where it materializes
it's about community. there is a growing number of people worldwide who are starting to resemble the beautiful minds that visit this blog, but we are so scattered geographically. this is the main issue, because it is those that are geographically closest to you that will be important during the collapse, yet right now, the ratio of enlightened people to people around you is low.
i think the way we reconcile this issue start online, where we already have some gravity to work with. this blog appears to be evolving into a social network, and that will be huge. we need to harness the massive power of connectivity and freedom of information that the internet provides at a feverish pace, because due to the fact that the internet is such a disseminating vehicle of free speech, it wont be long before the internet 911 comes, and that will be a judgement period, because if we have worked hard enough to preserve our intentions, then perhaps we will be able to expose the fraud and reverse the draconian ontology that would follow it, unlike 7 yrs ago...
the next point is that we can use the internet to create real connectivity and synthesize a movement around good intentions in physical geographic places. i have been on the same trip as everyone else here for the last few months, and what has occured to me lately, is how important the festival season will be. i really like the concept of good intentions amidst a collapse that we did not intend. we need to form some type of coheisive movement, some brand or concept or mantra, perhaps organized thru this online community in time for the festival season this spring/summer that can spread throughout the festival culture as a consistent idea, then become synchronistically connected in the mean time thru the internet places that this idea would promote. it could become be the talk of the town, the talk of a new town that we are going to have to pursue and create amidst the collapse of the familiar one...
yes
yes we have been working toward doing this with the festivals. our problem has been lack of capital, which means lack of manpower to get this organized. i have other friends involved in this project now. email me off-line if you want to volunteer time to it and also give me a sense of your skills and background.

polarities
Excellent, excellent article. I love these ideas.
I'd like to add that I don't believe a polar shift is enough for us. We can't just keep working within the polarities we see. It's important to learn to integrate the polarities into "one", and work from that position. The poles of our globe are melting, which I see as symbolic of the melting of polarities in all aspects. It may look like polarities are getting stronger (i.e. in political partisanship, in religious views, etc.), but I believe that's just a last-ditch effort to hang on to something that's melting rapidly.
The same goes for the economy. The extremes have led to a melt-down, and I keep reflecting on what an "eco-economy" would be like. Thanks for giving me a lot to consider.

"Will the transformation."-Rilke
Woo Hoo
thanks man, It is really
thanks man, It is really hard for me not to unconciously think I have to carry everyhting on my shoulders as you said. Sometimes I will lie awake at night and just think about everything. It feels like I have to though. I was put onthis earth with a functioning brain, I want to use it. I try not to be cynical, there is so much beauty and love within humanity. We are completely capable of changing things, we are just in a deep rut.
if someone would explain how
festivals
festivals are great opportunities to introduce new ideas and techniques to people, and to build networks of people who share similar interests.
"Will the transformation."-Rilke
which is all well and good
which is all well and good
which is all well and good but limited in scope. work is neither puritanical nor something to be avoided - it's necessary and valuable. if anyone thinks "growing a little food" isn't work, i suggest you try more and see the reality of it. before i went around suggesting an adolescent world where work is voluntary, i would take the time to examine how much work goes into the world we so blithely inhabit - who builds the solar panels. sweeps the floor. digs the fields. fixes the machines. plans the festival and cleans up after. The things that make a community solid are not always festivals and lazing in the sun doing yoga on the beach and thinking up Cool Thoughts. And it's not always what you want to be doing.
Remember the ant and the grasshopper?
Obama got it right on in the inauguration speech:
"What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task."
Anyone thoughtless creature can participate in leisure and go to a big 'ol party in the desert. It takes far more courage and wisdom and insight to participate in common labors and work.
bringing people together...
to participate in a communal event, a festival, connects the individual with the greater "organs" of the species . To act in a group towords greater good and larger scale transformation and symbyotic relationships....
many eco-villages are semi-vacant and in need of young blood....the rites include dancing, dreaming and working with the earth.
Because I went to two festivals last summer...Gaian Mind and Coalescence I now am in a greater network of alternative builders, harmonic technology makers, artists, musicians and.....
hopefully soon more gardeners.{currently sprouting some seeds}
I thought his speech gooood. Your right more responsibility is needed, more labor....but with your friends!
peace
we're working on it
Having events/festivals actually at the ecovillages.
Green friendly events, experimental and informative as they are fun. This not only spreads the word but draws energy towards the food growing alternative building intentional communities.
Now how do we mutate rave culture into a more intentional productive force?? Earthship building psytrance party?
bringing down industrial capitalism
while i agree for the most part with the 'intentions' laid out here, there is that persistent gap between here and there, and the feeling that something has been left unsaid. that something is CONTROL - the people in control, the machine in control, the money and weaponry and industry in control. that control will stand in the way of our best intentions...
we can't pretend that alternatives to the system that don't first address the problem of dismantling the system can thrive. control will step in sooner rather than later. control is ruining the planet. the most pressing problem we face now is how to break control. everything else is secondary. it would be foolish to think that the implacable death-urge of capitalism and the state will not run its ruinous course if it is not successfully resisted. i just don't believe in the possibility of a smooth transition.
we need to start thinking about bringing down this system so that our beautiful 'intentions' can thrive.have you read the 'anti-civilization' philosophers john zerzan or derrick jensen? i think they offer powerful challenges that need to be considered by anyone really serious about our prospects for a healthy future on this planet.
--- also, re: 'In fact, the breakdown of our financial system has not altered the amount of tangible resources available on our planet...'while it is true that the economic crisis has not altered the amount of 'resources' on the planet, it has also not slowed the catastrophic devastation of the oceans, or changed the fact that topsoil erosion due to agriculture and deforestation continues at a staggering rate, or halted the exponential increase in species extinctions and global warming, or provided an antidote to the poisons that are being pumped out daily by the megaton . perhaps the problem is that we think of the earth as an aggregation of 'resources'... again - the big question may not be, 'what does your favorite utopian future look like' (although this is important too), but how do we stop industrial capitalism before its too late?
Power is only legitimate if you make it so.
You two add a very important dimension to this discussion. I certainly understand the investigation of "them," it's what started me into questioning everything, (and lead me here) but I feel I was consumed by the fear and it only brought me more separation and negativity. We have a choice between seeing people as rats in a cage, or seeing everyone as a part of ourselves and feel joy for recognizing that connection. It's a choice between separation or unity. This is the essence of the psycadelic experience - dissolving boundaries and recognizing ourselves in the world. The way to separate yourself from the divine, to wallow in the illusion, is to place judgement on others and hold yourself up as an awakened one.
Devon says,"we can't pretend that alternatives to the system that don't first address the problem of dismantling the system can thrive."
Two things. First, anything recognizing the power of the system is itself making real the illusion of control. Isn't fear what makes power real? Ever consider that
"that persistent gap between here and there, and the feeling that something has been left unsaid. that something is CONTROL - the people in control, the machine in control, the money and weaponry and industry in control. that control will stand in the way of our best intentions..."
is an illusion you've created in your mind? Ever consider that it was intentionally left unsaid? That's the whole point of this - intention leads to manifestation. If you focus on an illusion of separation between you and "them" then that is what is strengthened.
Secondly, why not focus instead on transcending the system and creating something new.
The best thing I've learned through all this is that our world is much more malleable than we could have imagined. Having faith in humanity is having faith in ourselves. When are compassionate toward ourselves, we see compassion all around us. The choice of how to see the world, (and how the world is) is up to us.
Control
"we can't pretend that alternatives to the system that don't first address the problem of dismantling the system can thrive. control will step in sooner rather than later."
You know I am with you on this one. Participation in the system is mandatory, not optional...at least, as far as 'control' is concerned. They are willing to let a few cooks go in to the woods, to maintain the illusion of freedom and choice...but any movement that begins to significantly reduce participation in the system (and, hence, the amount of money in their pockets) will not be tolerated.
They will step in -- probably claiming something about a cult, or damaging drug use, or something -- and that is when our mettle will really be tested. Make no mistake: these people have intentions all their own, and they have controled the surplus for generations. There will come a time when we will have to really stand up for what we believe in; and be willing to suffer and sacrifice to make it happen.
I'm not saying kill. I am not for violence. I believe in organized non-compliance. However, they are going to try their hardest to make people comply. Look at the movement led by Gandhi in India. Don't believe it will be significantly different here...one need only look at the police response to protest rallies across the country to see this.
A simple agent provacateur in the mix, and they can blame the whole thing on the protestors for 'starting the violence'.
Even in the advent of collapse, I believe there will still be at least pockets of military control, exercised by persons who stockpiled before the fall.
But one thing you can count on: they aren't going to just relinquish their control, and come join hands with us to sing 'Kumbaya'.
Don't mean to sound doom-and-gloom...we certainly don't want to focus on this exclusively...but we just as certainly don't want to ignore it.
"You must *be* the change you wish to see in the world." Mahatma Gandhi
Moving Forward
I agree with Traveler.
Daniel's main point here, I think, is that the way forward is spear-headed by our intentions and expectations. We're co-creating this myth as we go. It's kinda like the alien/UFO phenomenon. If you look into it expecting to find proof of existence, you just might. If you look into it in search of proof of non-existence, well that just might find you as well. Intention keeps you focused and keeps you moving forward. Which is the key. Stagnation is what kills us.
I spent a lot of time fretting over the concept of some great evil power controlling the masses for some unknown end. While I agree that there is an element of this that needs to be taken into consideration, I don't think it's in our best interest to focus on it. Learn about it, yes. Be aware of the forces at play in our world, yes. If possible, fight it, yes. But to refrain from positive progress in the face of this monolith of tyranny, no way! Don't let an idea like this slow you from moving forward.
The important thing to remember is that "the elite" are only powerful because of us. We let them be powerful. We give power to them (if even unconsciously) and ... we can take it away.
If their power comes from money, don't give them anymore. Grow your own food, make your own energy, live your own life. Don't propagate their system by funding it. (To the extant that you are able at this juncture, of course.)
Second, don't let them enchant you with the media. Get your news from a variety of online sources, small outfits instead of big guys. Don't watch tv (it's just advertisements broken up by some semblance of entertainment to keep you watching the advertisements).
The only reason "they" have any control of the direction of this ship is because WE have stepped away from the wheel. To say that it's pointless to move forward without first destroying the current system is a product of fear that keeps us from doing anything. The idea that we are powerless is a cunningly-crafted illusion that causes stagnation. The act of moving forward on our own in search of a better way... that will dismantle the current system. Progress.
You can't storm the Pentagon with a pea-shooter. But you can move forward... with INTENTION... toward a world where we don't need them and, therefore, don't give them any power at all.
no illusions
I agree. But, what does
I agree. But, what does fighting against this world look like? Personally, I think that is entirely dependent on your own intentions, coupled with your experiential truth. In my own experience, I think its important to stand in solidarity with the opressed peoples of the world, but whether that means marching on mayday or learning how to grow our own food next to inner-city kids is entirely dependent on each of our experiences. Organizing communities, learning essential skills, and relocalization efforts seem to be the most promising way of engaging the general public, and thus helping facilitate mass awakenings so that we really can all stand in solidarity and fully realize what dismantling capitalism requires. That is, in order to perpetuate the dismantling of this system we need to help others wake up to its horrors. Women must find ways to become empowered quickly. Any way you look at it, we can all become empowered by learning how to live sustainably. That's a huge step and it takes a lot of unlearning. We all need to go through our own death and rebirth initiations. It will help if we have a community supporting us first.

There's nothing to fight against but yourself.
"this is part of the MANDATORY system that, no, I had no part in creating, and is not an illusion. this is not power that we gave to them, it is power that they took, by force."
The essential question is: do your thoughts (consciousness) affect anything outside your skull? Quantum physics and eastern thought suggest they do.
I'd say the consciousness of the parts creates the consciousness of the whole. You're own inner discord helped create the system that you see as negative.
The universe seeks wholeness and integration. On some level we create these "negative" aspects of reality in order to integrate with them.
"When an inner situation is not made conscious, it appears outside as fate." Carl Jung
Well it's a good debate...
It seems you have to be sayinng that there is no coherence or order on a deeper level, and that events happen randomly. The Greeks and Joseph Campbell would certainly disagree with there being no archetypal hero's journey. I'm just not able to say, "here is a wall in front of my face and I don't affect anything on the other side of it." I mean isn't this ridiculous? Are you saying that consciousness has zero non-local effects?
