i-Dosing

A series of audio ‘trips’ has brought the world of altered states to new levels of digital convenience with the i-Doser program. Downloads for Windows systems, iPhone, and iPods, enable users to download virtual audio tracks, which stimulate the brain into wave states that simulate drugs like Peyote, Marijuana, Lucid Dreams, Orgasm, LSD, and a variety of other original head-trips.
Reminiscent of previous programs for brain hemisphere synchronization, such as the Monroe Institute’s “Hemi Sync” program, varying sound frequencies are deliberately miss-matched to produce beat frequencies that the brain then locks onto. This induces varying brain wave states such as the classic alpha, delta, theta, states as well as an addition of new flavors of consciousness, which simulate intoxicated states.

uhhh
Yeah, I agree.
Not a new product at all.
The volume of advertising here at RS is becoming louder than the grass roots content that I originally came here to enjoy. In addition, the veil between the content and the advertising here is wearing very thin. Every article now seems to be plugging a product.
While I guess the owners have to make a buck, all the good stuff is being replaced...
Well, almost all the good stuff. At least there's still the reader's comments. Without them, there'd be no practical purpose to this place.
The good thing (there's always a good thing) is that a contemporary truth is being reinforced here--one which all innocents need to remember: Almost everything is for sale!
The Usual Confusion
Whatever brainwave state some researcher may detect with their technological toy when someone is well and truly dosed is NOT THE CAUSE of that state of consciousness. Period.
Damn shame the real stuff is illegal and hard to find, folks who use this technology would be in for a surprise. ;-)
If there were dreams to sell, What would you buy?
I am with you on this one Leon.
One of my gripes (old curmudgeon that I am) is that with a lot of 'alternative' (and New Age) spirituality there is often something to buy....a retreat, a book, a guru, a course, a therapist, a DVD. Some of these are very expensive indeed and beyond the pocket of many of us.
None of these are wrong in themselves of course and people have to make a living. But sometimes I do wonder about it all. Is spirituality becoming just another commodity? I guess I already know the answer to that one!
On what basis are such products recommended to Sandwichers? Will using this technology for example actually induce lucid dreams or give me peyote experience? Did it do anything for the author of this Blog? Now that's what I would find interesting!
Personally I like to read genuine reviews of books etc here. But what we often get is an extract from a book or a link to a commercial site. Essentially then, just another advert!
But I still return here for some of the fantastic articles. I haven't read anything anywhere as powerful as 'Exile Nation' for a long long time.
Do not look outside yourself. The Teacher is within. (George Fox)
How is this an advertisement?
Hi Leon and Jeff,
My understanding is that an advertisement is for something you are trying to sell. RS is not selling i-Doser nor do we have any deal with that company. This was a news blog post about a tech development we thought might be of interest to our readers. It was not an essay or an endorsment about the personally experienced effects of i-Doser, merely a head's up about a possibility that we thought Sandwichers might like. If it wasn't your cup of tea, I'm sure you'll enjoy another post on the site.
I'd like to address something Jeff brought up about the nature of the site's content--if RS actually had the money to pay its wonderful writers we could arrange for them to spend more time diving deeply into more topics. This would be amazing, but is unfortunately not possible given the demands of day jobs and real life financial needs. All of the amazing content that you read for FREE was created for FREE. We have come to the point where we want to expand past what we are already doing, and need some cash to do it. We aren't asking for a lot of money--just $30 a year to support what we are doing. I truly don't understand why this seems so outrageous to people or why it is being conflated with notions of spirituality. I could see if we were trying to get rich, but that is certainly not the case. What we want is for this project to reach it's true potential, and we are reaching out to the community we helped foster to make that happen.
Peace,
Jennifer Palmer
clearing the air...
I know this was for Leon and Jeff but I understand where they were coming from... If you DO click the I-Doser link, there is a very visible link to their "dealer" program; through which they offer anyone a 20% commision to hawk their wares. To the uncertain, it isn't outside of the realm of possibility that the link above is provided through that program, and so could provide the I-Doser 'affiliate' with 20% of any traffic that is redirected there from this site... which would seem slightly uncool.
You say that's not the case, and we want to believe that to be true and so will. But that doesn't mean that we readers will turn a blind eye to things that legitimately seem suspiciously commercial, as this did. Sorry for any confusion.
I also want to add that the readers; this community that the RS staff has helped foster, also participates in making this site much more than a digital ghost town for FREE. And we direct our friends and family to great writing and insites on this site for FREE. Granted, I don't have a philosophy degree, but it's important to remember that we're in this together. (Besides I don't think anyone said anything relating to or disparaging about the $30 subscription... RS staff certainly do have a right to ask for help. & they deserve it too.)
Thanks for this
I definitely agree--we ARE in this together. RS and its readers are a community. I apologize if there was confusion about whether RS was a part of an affiliate program for i-doser--we are definitely not.
Thanks for your comment.

Supporting Reality Sandwich
Jennifer,
I'd love to support RealitySandwich but in my opinion the "BACKSTAGE PASS" bannering does not convey the intended message well. The "support" message is made really secondary in the Backstage Pass offer, emphasizing instead a bunch of extras a lot of people will not be interested in. I'm sure there are plenty other readers who don't feel the need to participate in live conference. International readers also may find the event discounts of little value given that those advantages happen in the US. Last but not least I feel the backstage pass offer is not very effective in that it entices the reader with extras the reader can not see. I'd happily pay 30$ or MORE to get a nice tshirt or poster with one of those "backstage only" promised designs. PS: AND regardless of the offer you still need to emphasize the support message, because for people on the other side of the fence it's not evident that you need money. Yes we are an uneducated bunch ;)
I don't think people complained about the financial needs or goals of RS either, but the poor choice of website for this article. i-Doser's website is not very subtle to say the least. THis article doesn't cover the "tech" of binaural beats, the i-Doser site makes false promises for anyone who has tried binaural beats knows it's not at all comparable to a "trip".. and best of all.. they ask you to pay 12.95$ to read the DEFINITIVE GUIDE to their own products. This site looks like so many other uninspired and lifeless sites designed to make money wherever there is a hole, or "niche" as they call it.

Thankyou for your response Jennifer I truly appreciate your response.
I certainly take your point about what constitutes advertising and we could no doubt discuss it at length. ( For example I can advertise something without gaining from it myself, simply by making it known to a wider audience that otherwise might not be aware of it . To advertise essentially means to draw attention to)
The broader point I (and I think Leon) were making was the sense of being pointed in the direction more and more to products for sale. There is a significant difference in drawing attention to a commercial and a non commercial site. The commercial site purely exists to sell a product. That is its reason for being.).
'All of the amazing content that you read for FREE was created for FREE. We have come to the point where we want to expand past what we are already doing, and need some cash to do it. Yes I think professional writers should be paid for their work and yes I think that thirty dollars a year is very reasonable and for most people affordable. In no way do I find this outrageous and I am sorry if I gave that impression even by implication.
My point was about highly expensive and often dubious commercially driven ventures which purport to further personal development (part of our capitalist culture's appropriation of everything as a saleable product) and I did not include RS itself in this.
I am sure there are readers who continue to value the kind of links which make me feel uncomfortable and that is fantastic. It meets their need to be aware of something they could personally find very helpful.
My comment offered an expression of my personal unease only, though some others share that unease. We may be mistaken or we may be onto something significant. Let each make up their own mind!
I find much to enjoy on RS and very much value many of the articles. I comment because I care about its success (and possibly because my inner curmudgeon likes to have a moan now and then) and to participate in and sometimes stimulate discussion.
Now I am going away to mumble into my long white beard about how things aint what they used to be and what is the world comimg to!
Ha--that last line made me smile
Thank-you, Jeff...I think I misunderstood your rightful critique of dubious commercial enterprises as being a criticism of RS. As I mentioned to Groove is in the Heart, RS and its readers form a community--your vigilance and concern for the direction the site is going in is very much appreciated.
Thanks for writing back--

FRAUDULENT PROGRAM
This is old stuff
Robert Monroe pioneered in this technology in the 70's and 80's.
I still have a set of cassette tapes from the Monroe Institute.
It is in no way similar to psychedelics. What it can do is invoke profound relaxation and induce the mind-body into a state similar to sleep but with awareness. The Monroe Institute investigated this as a method of invoking out of body experiences and, I think, for some people it might work well. Unfortunately I am a little too grounded in this reality and something more forceful is required for me.
I would suggest that anyone interested in the technology, check out the Monroe Institute. They have been at it longer.
It is for this reason that I
It is for this reason that I am sad to see this on RS. iDoser in many ways is mocked by people who are familiar with them and their practices and the research that went into the discovery of binural beats.
This story would have been much more interesting if the author had decided to do more than promote a product. The science is really interesting.
Commercial Content on RS
These comments have been very helpful but I feel I'd like to express some concern about being too much of sticklers on things that are "commercial." After hearing those comments, I went through the site and noticed that most of our shout-outs for "commercial" products are actually books from independent publishers. As Jennifer mentioned, we don't currently have the resources to do book reviews, so we run chapter excerpts and news posts on new releases.
We intend to keep on informing RS readers about interesting cultural material coming out in the fields we cover (who else is doing this for us?). Most often this will mean supporting struggling small businesses like our own, but sometimes it may be something more mainstream, if of potential interest to readers. We don't want to overly censor what we cover.
And Fabrice, I really appreciate your explanation of how we could better ask for support for Backstage. Although we most likely won't be able to send out T-shirts (since $30 would barely cover the cost), we definitely need to show more of the cool stuff you can get on Backstage. Also, I intend to see if we could do more of an NPR approach to asking for financial help to keep us afloat. And that said, I'd like to invite anyone who loves the site and can afford the $2.50 per month for Backstage, to go ahead and sign up and help ensure that we can continue throughout the New Year.
Thanks for everyone's support and dynamic participation over the last couple of years!
Helpful
Thanks Jennifer and Jonathan
I have found it very helpful to understand the rationale for commercial links and made aware of what the situation is financially for RS.
I wonder if when you give an author for example some exposure that they might be willing to respond to a few comments or questions. from readers. (I know that some do and I find that infinitely more interesting. I am more likely to investigate further and maybe buy a book.) A lot of people visit here. That seems a fair exchange between the author/publisher and RS. And makes for more informative and interesting reading for Sandwichers.
Another Voice
As a pagan and a chaos magician, I use technology to perform ritual and reach other states. I work with binaural beats and have bought products from Monroe Institute, among others. For instance, I bought a very nice CD from someone who incorporates binaural beats with solfeggio tones. Very nice! Also, Monroe Inst. has gotten on the bandwagon and has several offerings with music and drumming, which I also bought.
I ordered a couple of CDs from I-Dose based on the Sandwich article. I have no doubt that I won't get high from listening to I-Dose products. But I do wish to explore on my own and figure out which tracks will work for meditation, or ritual, or study. The fact that a track may bear a label called, "Cocaine," does not have anything to do with the work I might be able to do with it.
As for making money off this, since when did the Marxist revolution hit? I missed it. We live in a capitalist society and people must make money to eat and consume. It's a fact. Here's a shocker: I have whored myself out for medical benefits. Yes, it's true. I hate my job, but keep it so I can get money and medical benefits.
By the way, from a mail list, I ascertained that Monroe Institute has a more powerful technology, but does not share it with the public. What if I-Dose represents some of that withheld technology? I'd like to explore it for myself without Monroe Institute deciding what I should get into. This point is moot, however, because I have no idea what combination of binaural beats they are guarding.
Your opinion please...
Personally, I would like to see more stuff like the following on RS, unless I’m mistaking the RS I’ve come to know and love, for a book club…
“Two Russian scientists, Grazyna Fosar and Franz Bludorf, have conducted scientific experiments confirming the fact that the human DNA is a biological Internet, and that DNA can be influenced and programmed by words and frequencies”
http://personal-developmentblog.com/the-living-biological-internet-brain...
The implications of this, well stated within the body of this fine article, are astounding! If DNA can be reprogrammed by human language, whether verbal or not, and if our DNA forms a collective hub of human communication with the DNA of other life forms, and perhaps with the virtual DNA of the planet, the possibilities are endless!
Will we again be able to communicate with other species, or with weather patterns as in our animist past, AND KNOW WHY AND HOW IT WORKS?
Please click and read, and respond with your opinion regarding what I would like to see appear here at RS. Do you agree? Disagree?
Thank you.
"Suggest a Story"
Hey Leon,
Just a note. There's a simple way to see this kind of stuff on RS. At the top right of the site, you'll see a button for "Suggest A Story." Just send ideas or article submissions through that. We're very attentive to our readers suggestions and try and cover the ones we think are interesting.
Hey Jonathan
I suggested this story weeks ago and I got a positive response, but it never appeared, and most of what I've seen since is more book club reviews.
Perhaps the fact that the link draws one to a competing blog site has discouraged RS from posting it? If that's the case, here's a link to the origin of the article. But it's not as easily digestible: http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/ciencia/ciencia_genetica02.htm
I hesitate to concluded that this is not the type of stuff RS wants to post here, but I'm not totally sure (read: confused). So I thought I'd post the link here for the rest of us in order to see if I'm right or wrong.
You see, I perceive an expanding polarity here between RS and its visitors. While I visit RS to enjoy the content, I'm also investigating the cause of this perceived polarity and its solution.
awsome but not so new
Leon, liked your comments on the site and what you'd like to see.
No doubt that the power of the divine is astonishing, to say the least, in every way. This article has a new languaging for it, using language as a portal to our DNA. Is it really so different than "programming the unconscious" or even prayer, dressed up?
I'm no psychedelic explorer, having hung up my guns a long time ago, but what's turning my crank is not metaphysical speculation, but excitement about how we can set about the task of saving our asses from the end of the world as we imagine we know it.
I came to this site through reading 2012, and Charles Eisenstein and don't visit that often. But what I want more of is practical helping the people. The purely speculative is less powerful, though fascinating. I can always learn a new way to think of it, but these don't help me live it and that's what I want.
Gotta go!

The Titanic
Thanks for your comment LocalResilliance. I appreciate the call-to-action that you and others on this site are making. I also came to RS after reading Charles Eisenstein’s wonderful book. Toward the end of his work however, he wrote about ‘practical’ ways to improve the economy as if these are the primary solutions to our dangerous situation.
My difficulty with such ‘solutions’ is that humanity is missing two essential points:
1) A problem cannot be solved by the same consciousness that created it – Einstein.
2) A higher state of consciousness will see everything below it with greater understanding – Wilber.
Conclusion: First strive to achieve a higher state of consciousness among as many people as possible, and then create the architecture for paradigmatic change.
What RS and it’s visitors are doing is exploring different horizontal stages of the same state of consciousness, while only imagining that they are looking down at all of this from a higher vertical state above. See, for instance Jennifer’s article on cap and trade protests being planned this month in NYC. This is just more rearranging of the furniture. "The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge" -Steven Hawking.
What I am trying to do is pull us up to a higher state of awareness from which totally new solutions will naturally flow. RS professes to be a platform for exactly such transformation, so I'll keep plugging myself in here doing my best to lift awareness.
The Titanic is sinking, deck furniture and all. Those who’ll survive are playing the violin and learning how to swim.

as far as the larger issue being discussed (which goes far beyond RS itself, but rather into the current model of information production & the definition of virtual communities), it seems there exists a fundamental disconnect between the producers & consumers of content and where that line should be drawn, if there is such a line at all. this is the 3rd discussion on such matters i've read in so many days which seem to dead end to a reveal a canyon of separation within said 'communities'.
so in the hopes of not inviting further criticism or acrimony, i would humbly propose that particular discussion this may be indicative of this larger issue facing us at this time, what clif high describes as an overall feeling amongst the populace of 'buyer rejection' against the old structures and all attempts to use the tools of those old structures (no matter how thin or sophisticated the veil). at the same time, content producers are struggling to find ways to survive while maintaining true to their ideals while being constricted by traditional methods to generate revenue that may have the tendency to compromise those ideals, like for example having to seeing their community more as consumers over contributors.
being that RS/evolver is on the forefront of questioning these underlying structures of 'reality' and seeking to discover a new way of organizing social frameworks & expanding individual & collective consciousness, perhaps it might be worthwhile to encourage an open conversation of such matters so that each side can honestly air out their laundry (needs, desires, fears, etc) in a way to maybe incubate the development of an alternative model that is sustainable and participatory and can blur the line between production & consumption of information, knowledge and consciousness.

30 dollars to make a tshirt?
Hey Leon
The blog you referred to pretty much quotes the biblioteca pleyades site concerning the "Living Internet". They were both "easily digestible," I found. However, it turns out the source you refer to is someone's interpretation of the Russians' work.
I explored the many branches on the biblioteca site and I can see why Reality Sandwich would be hesitant to feature something from that site. It's full of references to the Annunaki, Atlantis, ET and God, etc. I like that stuff, and I'm glad I found that site, but RS might feel they are trivializing their message by linking to them.
$2.50 sounds reasonable
Hmmmm
To buy or not to buy? That is the question. Is it possible to buy consciousness? I am sure it's quite possible. It might be the best purchase of your life, or not.
Ive seen this concept done a way lot better. Check this out - http://www.mindmodulations.com/
Ive procrastinated, but I really want to buy one of these, they look so futuristic and and neat !
although this is quite
