Humanity on a Wire

aquariusbig2.jpg

I read Daniel Pinchbeck's recent article "The Age of Uncertainty" with wonder and excitement, noting how similar my experiences of late have been to his. My internal flip-flops between knowing and not knowing are increasing, as is my desire to pick one side and stay with it. And from the comments in response to his article, I'm not the only one trying to coordinate this internal cirque de soleil.

I first encountered a new kind of unsettling uncertainty in my life when I ventured into the world of spirituality for the first time a few years ago, read a couple of books, and asked someone, "How can it be that opposites attract, yet like attracts like? How can both of those be true?" My quest to solve what my mind perceived as a problem was, as the song goes, like trying to catch a cloud and pin it down.

Reading Daniel's article, I instantly got a sense, via the symbolic language of astrology, of how to place this uncertainty, this shift in logical dualistic thinking, into a greater context.

I saw a symbol, which I'll get to in a minute.

First, symbols are a terrific way to grasp a larger picture via a smaller picture. More can be contained in one symbol than can ever be expressed in words. Symbols are like spiritual hardware, gigantic-yet-compact hard drives containing mind-boggling amounts of data. Who needs Blu-ray or high-definition television when you have symbols?

One of the most enduring symbolic languages is that of astrology. Astrological symbols can be a bit unwieldy because they embody the truth "as above, so below." The symbol for Pisces, for example, can describe any individual born under the sign of Pisces; it can describe 1/12 of any given year; or it can describe a whole lot more, like the dynamics of the current Astrological Age that we have been living under for over two millennia now: the Age of Pisces. Interestingly enough, as I read "The Age of Uncertainty," the symbol for the astrological sign of Pisces kept coming to mind.

In his article, Daniel describes a shift in our dualistic, logical thinking. It's like we are collectively experiencing what Joni Mitchell sings about: "I've looked at life from both sides now... and I really don't know life at all."

This vein of dualistic thinking is decidedly related to the Age of Pisces, an Age that is coming to its end. I see this shift as central to the process of moving from an out-dated sense of certainty, through a new time of uncertainty, and then into an entirely new concept of what certainty is about.

To help explain what's going on, we can take a look at the symbol for Pisces, which is two fish swimming in opposite directions, yet attached. Symbols elicit an infinite number of varied interpretations that all somehow still relate to the one symbol. In this instance, I see the two fish representing Duality itself, particularly as it has emerged in our globe over the past 2,000 years. There are two fish everywhere you look in our history:

good/evil, light/shadow, conscious/unconscious, masculine/feminine, east/west, left/right, mind/heart, thinking/feeling, domination/submission, master/slave, external/internal, individual/collective, male/female, plaintiff/defendant, democrat/republican, right/wrong, infinite/finite, limited/liberated.

To put it in perspective, the dualities have created separation and divisiveness which have, in turn, led to world wars, global trauma, and endless conflict on every level. We have a history of two sides continually pulling on the other, not necessarily aware that there is even another side, let alone the awareness of what your pull or push does to the other side.

The dualities make even more sense in light of the previous three Ages, stretching back (roughly) to the year 6500 B.C:

  • 6500 B.C. - the Age of Gemini (the twins) first introduced duality into human consciousness, and some say this is when a real-life Garden of Eden existed, with the masculine and feminine duality;
  • 4500 B.C. - the Age of Taurus (the bull) was the age of the dominant Feminine; and
  • 2500 B.C. - the Age of Aries (the ram), its counterpart as the age of the dominant Masculine.

And for the last 2,000 years, in the Age of Pisces, we have been trying to integrate all of these massive dynamics together into an ever-shifting ocean of consciousness and unconsciousness.

It's been like a connect-the-dots picture, where we are finally -- finally -- getting to see just how many dots there really are on the page of our reality, and we are only just beginning to connect them and see what pictures or what patterns emerge. I see our evolution symbolically as being a diligent process of separation and identification (the dots), with the next step being to go "up" to a higher perspective (i.e. a symbolic perspective), not unlike climbing each separate step to the top of a Mayan pyramid. Each step has its own perspective.

If you ever saw the X-Files episode "Conduit," you might remember the little boy who started writing pages and pages of seemingly meaningless data, very quickly. He laid the pages out, which made it only look more confusing and absurd. Yet when Agent Scully walked up the staircase and saw the view from above, all of the meaningless, separate data bits formed a picture, the symbol of a face. She went from being decidedly uncertain about what was going on, to having a wildly new sense of certainty, from which she could extract meaning.

We are now at the time when, like Agent Scully, it is necessary to not only move from a previous sense of certainty into a new sense of uncertainty (as we embrace the polarities of duality), but then move into an entirely new sense of certainty. Two-dimensional duality as we've known it is being placed within the context of a fully-expanded 3-D global perspective. Like James Bertolino writes, "It's hard to think like a planet. We've got to try."

Fortunately for us, as the Age of Pisces starts to wind down -- which it is, in dramatic Götterdamerung fashion -- the new Age of Aquarius is beginning to crack its way in, and the statement for the sign of Aquarius is, "I Know." Think of Oprah Winfrey, an Aquarius, closing each issue of her "O" magazine with the column, "What I Know For Sure." Think of President Obama, an Aquarius Rising, and his sense of certainty. There's something "new" about it, something difficult to pin-point because we've not seen it before. It embraces the whole, in a new way. It doesn't get encompassed by the whole, but it encompasses the whole. This is our new reference point.

The symbol for Aquarius is the water-bearer, and is often depicted in short form as two waves. The dominant waves of Piscean consciousness (strongly linked to emotional undercurrents and unconsciousness) are shifting into the energy waves of Aquarius. We are moving from one form of consciousness to another. It's not just a step up; it's a whole new orientation. And if we really grasp the concept of what it means to have a new kind of consciousness, we have to fully admit that it's a new kind of consciousness. It's not old. It's not secure. It's not certain. It's not familiar. It's not like it used to be. It's not something for which we have a basis of certainty. Our historical safety net is thinning and breaking all over the place, yet we're like Phillipe Petit ("Man On Wire"), stepping out on the wire on a journey from one tower to another. We are humanity on a wire.

At this juncture, symbols can be a significant guide. We can learn to access parts of the hard drive we didn't know how to access before.

Consider that for the past 2,000 years we have been swimming within consciousness, like the Pisces fish inside the ocean. Then, consider the water-bearer symbol for Aquarius. This is a symbol that suggests being outside of the consciousness (water) rather than within it, as if everything we have known for thousands of years fits into a container, which we can then pour and share generously with everyone/everything/everywhere else.

How do we flip our entire consciousness outside-in, upside-down, forwards-backwards, inside-out? How do we detach ourselves from one Age and accept another? How do we make this shift?

I don't know, and I don't really trust anyone who says they do. All I know is that if you feel uncertain, I'm certain that you're on track. And we're all in this together. There really is a cirque de soleil happening inside each of us, a circus of the soul. Everything our duality-loving minds have known and perceived as certain is being challenged and overturned by the encompassing capacity of the soul. And, if you've ever seen a Cirque de Soleil performance, you know that with an incredible amount of hard work (and flexibility) and a relentlessly present-time-focused certainty (with no guarantees), there can be an equally incredible and elegant outcome.

Great piece Shawn

You've harnessed the most powerful symbols of all: words.

I've thought about the tendency towards dualism in the universe before... where does it come from; why twos and not threes or fours?

I suppose if you look deep enough into anything in the universe, supposedly you'll find it to be made of waves, oscillating in two opposing directions.

universal or human?

Thanks for your comment, David!

I've wondered if duality is universal, or if it's just "an earth thing", a human thing during a particular portion of our evolution. What does the universe look like outside of our limited perspective of time and space? I think it's time and space, in part, that give us the perspective of duality that we've had for a while now. Outside of that perspective... who knows. :o

matter |\ spirit (duality as seperation)

Perhaps the current game is to forget unity by signing up for a mind wipe via the simulation of this world from scratch. Perhaps we are simply testing the bounds of reality, this is all consequence of our initial choice to turn away. It is hard not to be upset with the scientific establishment for falling prey to the partisan philosophy of materialism. The unintended psychic consequences of such a stance are now embedded across the minds of modern men. I speak in stereotypes of course, but stereotypes are what our system produces every day. Bring philosophy back to our public schools and civic squares. Forget religion of any kind, make kids think, don't indoctrinate them with a state religion of materialism by default. Duality has been the status quo for millenia in the story of human. The spirit's deep dive into this corner of the material has brought much pain and suffering, but has also allowed for much growth and experience. We know ourselves more intimately now. We will continue to learn about ourselves as the human story marches on. IT is what IT is. Would we really want it any other way? The revolution of mind that happens when one rejects duality for unity cannot be underestimated, and is one I can personally vouch for. The lessons of free will and compassion are timeless in their own essence. Thank you RS community, you are truly walking the path, and providing a venue to keep the conversation going. After we 'let forever be' hope can live again. Hope breathes always, it is sometimes obscured by our false notions of reason, but I know that hope is.

yes

"The revolution of mind that happens when one rejects duality for unity cannot be underestimated".

Well said. I tend to not really reject duality, though, because duality is inherently a part of unity. I'm learning to appreciate its purpose. (And, as an identical twin, I can't help but face something regarding duality every day.)

Its raining outside

Gota watch out for dogma. No matter how the dots pan out. "duality" is just a word. Good read.

Ego, uncertainty and chaos

Disconnected from earthly growing, living and loving one will always be perturbed with uncertainty. City living, culture indoctrination from birth... the ego seeks to grasp, its seeks closure. Can you think of anything more banal, more like a notion of hell than certainty?

I believe the nature of the divine play of energy we exist in is that which the modern mind most especially hates and is afraid of - infinity. Infinite possibilities demand personal awareness and responsibilty to bring forth forms, (be it a house, a garden, a child, an economy) filled with love and respect for the gift of being alive.

What forms are brought forth by those running Consumer captialism 5.0 as McKenna calls it? What forms would you like to bring, in your hearts desire?

I know that my dreams of living Totoro style or Ewok style arent just my own... we have this choice to rejoice in the infinite possiblities... If we take nature as our teacher we need not be afraid of uncertainty.

McKenna is most helpful here on the inability of the ego to understand chaos and its endless grasping activities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yO8TmnqGso&feature=PlayList&p=0E580EEB83...

Excellent open-minded article

"I don't know and don't trust anyone who says they do". Amen to that! My first post to this site since reading for a few months. This article is in no way one sided as mentioned by the lord guy. His/her statements are the most one-sided view I have ever read on this site. Keep up the good work guys. Shawn, this is the first I've read from you. Write some more. Daniel, Jonathan, Charles, Adam and so many others are continuing the hope. Archonicus, You always do. I am not much at putting the words together like most of you on this site, but I understand what all of you are doing. Keep it up ladies and gentlemen. Simply, JC

thank u

Thanks. I'm sure I've got something else up my sleeve to write about. I appreciate your encouragement.

a little something to think about....

No offense but highlighting that there are binaries within our world is basically like saying we breath air. It doesn't do anything to show how these binaries relate to anything and doesn't give any resolve to the problems they might cause. Binaries were created by people, not the other way around. The reason is because people need to have a relationality and a lot of communication theorists would say that it's by recognizing and describing others that we can know ourselves by saying "I am not that" or "I am that" (much like a 6 year old wants to emulate the profession of people they like). Some critical theorists would also say that by creating these divides causes us to cause violence on one another (ie: it's okay to torture and put these people in concentration camps because they're not Christians, they're not Americans, they're Jews etc). If anything there are more examples of how highlighting these binaries more causes more disparity between each community and causes more violence against them. The binary I have particular resentment against is the masculine/feminine duality you speak of repeatedly. This duality in particular is distressing for a couple of reasons a) you don't show what each word means to you b) you don't acknowledge that these words can hold multitudes of meaning (even though you talk about symbols being infinitely meaningful) and c) there's no reason why a feminine understanding of a different age might be different than a masculine. And on the astrology note, so you have mentioned how Aquarius is a water symbol but the characteristics you highlight are general to all water symbols and then don't reflect how each of those characteristics have an opposite that is also embodied in it (ie: water symbols are emotional, this includes empathy, anger, fear, love, compassion etc). And the analysis of Aquarius being a water bearer may be interesting but I don't see the connection of it being outside the understanding of water; it could also be seen as the steward of water, the controller of water or a multitude of other interpretations of "bearer". Don't mean to be harsh but I just think that some of these things should be further addressed. -Cr*sh

masculine and feminine

My article is broad and no doubt offers my own limited perspective while trying to integrate a lot of collective pieces that have been put together over the millenia by people other than me. It is intended as a nod toward holism (or whole-ism) and symbolic sight as a useful path forward that can hopefully resolve some of the issues raised from our history of duality. Thus, while I am male, I try to integrate both a masculine and feminine approach to writing and sharing my perspective.

Thanks for the feedback. The issues you raise would make good articles in their own right.

another perspective

Shawn, I like the idea of uncertainty, there are some things that I believe we cannot grasp with our human minds and that's okay, even beautiful. The problems usually arise when people think they know and try to get others to believe in what they think. True knowledge comes from another, more universal place within ourselves, whatever you call it: the heart, the soul, the oneness we're all connected to. The more we allow ourselves to "not know," the closer we get to truly understanding not only each other, but our connection to the source. As someone who has studied and written about astrology for quite a while now, I'd like to add a little something about Pisces and Aquarius. To the best of my understanding, Pisces corresponds most accurately to how you described it at the end of your post: swimming within consciousness, like a fish within an ocean. The duality you described in the beginning, is more of a shadow of Pisces, what happens when we don't realize its fullest potential of being pure consciousness where we're all One. Being human, it's usually our minds that act out the shadow side. For example, Christianity corresponds pretty closely with the Piscean age, and if you assume that the true intentions behind the archetypes in the Jesus story really point toward love, forgiveness and acceptance of all souls as part of God's grace, you get pretty close to the essence of Pisces. However, once the purity of the Jesus experience gets rationalized and institutionalized, you are injecting the duality of the mind you mention into this powerful symbol. It's very explosive. As soon as you try to nail down or "prove" your highest ground, you literally destroy its magic. "Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain" really sums up the Piscean age quite nicely: If you give it a name you give up its true power and slide into the dualistic, separate reality of the mind. Which brings me back to the "age of uncertainty" - this really could have been the most important lesson from the Piscean age, and maybe with the rising awareness and embrace of uncertainty we are starting to get it after 2000 years. Aquarius: I actually believe we've been entering the age of Aquarius for quite a while, possibly for 100 years. As is the case with the Mayan calendar, it's very tempting to assign an exact date and time to things, but it seems to me this may be more to help us grasp these transitions with our minds. As the earth's axis very slowly wobbles through the signs, it doesn't just enter a new era from one day to the next. It's like the seasons, you slowly see them coming, temperature slowly warming up, more rains, etc. Aquarius is about true identity, about swimming against the current, breaking away from the constraints of conventional wisdom. That's where technology comes in, it's a great way for humans to set ourselves apart individually, to go where no one's gone before, to fly away. Of course, after 2000 years of sacrificing our individual ingenuity for the sake of "oneness" (mostly a fake one from which churches have benefited, as stated above), it feels really good to be going our own way. I think the advent of the automobile at the turn of the last century was the beginning of our collective Aquarian consciousness, and the breaking apart of the Soviet Union in the late 80s into ever more small, independent states is one of the examples of its effects. Sounds really great, but just as with Pisces, there is a shadow side to Aquarius. Looking at where technology is taking us, I think it's a good guess to be cautious of becoming overly individualistic, and in the process, isolated. Just like the archetype of the Genius - we all admire them, but often it can be a very lonely existence - unable to make real human soul contact. So to me the biggest motivation during these times we find ourselves in is to keep things "real," to keep human contact, putting my hands in the dirt, saying hi to my neighbors, writing a note with pen on paper to the ones I care for. If we can harness the amazing visionary energy of Aquarius without falling prey to its mechanical tendencies and distance from the heart, we may be able to come out of these extraordinary times a bit wiser and more evolved. However, it requires for us to be comfortable "not knowing" in the head and allow ourselves to feel more of the truth that's within. Uncertainty is a difficult theme for Aquarius, but ultimately it is the crack where the light gets in.

paradox

Thanks, Sven, for your thought-provoking response. For me, the crux of Pisces is embracing paradox. The two fish are separate, but they are attached -- they are 2, but they are 1. Round and around and around they go. It's not one or the other; it's both.

Likewise, as human beings we are separate, yet we are one, we are whole. We are both separate and whole.

That's what comes to mind when I think of our Pisces Age... it's not necessarily that pinning down duality or separateness is a shadow of Pisces, but rather: we are both sides of the duality, and if we pick just one side (either side) for the long haul, we invariably push the other side into shadow, into the unconscious -- "oneness" people push separateness into the shadow and call it bad; separateness people push "oneness" into the shadow and find it immensely unattractive.

I like what you say about Aquarius and remembering the heart. To bring in a decidely Piscean mainstream association to what you're saying, it's fascinating to me that as the millenium came to a close, perhaps the biggest hit on mainstream radio in at least a decade was "My Heart Will Go On". Its popularity was, it seems to me, a collective reminder about something very important as we entered the more Aquarian 21st century.

Things are not what they seem

Shawn, well written and thought provoking Humanity is on the brink unless if we wake up en masse. The Department of Homeland Security has sent out an alert to health care providers outlining how BATF, FBI, and U.S. Marshals will be called upon to impose mandatory quarantines in the event of a widespread swine flu outbreak in the U.S. According to the report, “DHS Assistant Secretary Bridger McGaw circulated the swine flu memo, which was obtained by CBSNews.com, on Monday night. It says: “The Department of Justice has established legal federal authorities pertaining to the implementation of a quarantine and enforcement. Under approval from HHS, the Surgeon General has the authority to issue quarantines.” The memo states, “U.S. Customs and Coast Guard Officers assist in the enforcement of quarantine orders. Other DOJ law enforcement agencies including the U.S. Marshals, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives may also enforce quarantines. Military personnel are not authorized to engage in enforcement.” However, a separate Defense Department planning document on dealing with pandemics states that the Pentagon will use the forces at its disposal to assist in “quarantining groups of people in order to minimize the spread of disease during an influenza pandemic” and aid in “efforts to restore and maintain order.” As we reported yesterday, so-called “involuntary isolation” is already being enforced in certain areas of the United States. The state’s health director in North Carolina, Dr. Jeffrey Engel, said that authorities were already involuntarily isolating patients who may have the swine flu virus. He refused to divulge the location of where the victims were being quarantined. A d v e r t i s e m e n t News reports such as this one from MSNBC are prevaricating around the contention that quarantines are a normal event that Americans should be comfortable with. In reality, there has only been one case of “involuntary quarantine” in the U.S. in the last 45 years. “In 2007, Andrew Speaker, an Atlanta lawyer, was quarantined inside a hospital in Denver on suspicion of having extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis. It turned out that the CDC was incorrect and Speaker had a milder form of the disease,” states the CBS report. The MSNBC report also falsely claims that quarantines will solely be handled on a state/local level, when in reality, Bush’s executive order 13375 outlines a federal response, and the DHS memo lists numerous federal authorities that will have powers of quarantine. In addition, the Bush administration’s National Strategy For Pandemic Influenza, released in November 2005, states that the federal government will impose “quarantines” and “limitations on gatherings”. With Time Magazine busy preparing Americans to accept enforced mass vaccination programs and telling them to “trust” the government and “forgive” them when the vaccines cause death and injuries, the prospect of mandatory quarantines will likely be the precursor for any such nationwide vaccination program. The vaccine to supposedly combat swine flu is being manufactured by Baxter International, who were caught red-handed last month attempting to release bird flu vaccines which were contaminated with the deadly avian flu virus itself. Swine flu has caused the death of one toddler in the U.S. and in fact only seven of the supposed 159 fatalities in Mexico have been confirmed as swine flu - meaning the other 152 could have been due to any number of infectious diseases that routinely kill Mexicans in the thousands on a yearly basis. The comparative threat of swine flu does not correlate with the feverish reaction of authorities, who in the initial stages of the outbreak refused to take any measures to contain it, such as closing the border with Mexico, but after the virus had already begun to spread, they were quick to prepare draconian control measures while hyping the inevitability of a pandemic. Meanwhile, the hysteria whipped up by the media has spread faster than the actual virus itself. A Simple Synchronous Observation

I would proffer to submit something, a metaphor I am sure that you all have read, but an oft mentioned metaphor nonetheless, for the understanding of the holographic universe. The metaphor comes from David Bohm, as relayed by Michael Talbot and others, and can be described thusly: a single fish appearing at two different angles on two different television monitors, move in a synchronistic manner. Observation of the two fish reveals that they seem to have an eerie communication between each other, no matter the distance placed between the monitors. It is only when one realizes that they are the same fish does the connection make sense. The discussion of Pisces and the two fish in connection with the relationship between seeming opposites that occurs in this thread springs this to mind. Another thought that comes to mind, while I am allowing my mind to draw its own connections, is the Pythagorean/Platonic (one and the same, really, no?) myth of the creation of the universe, which involves what could be described as the collision of two separate monads, represented by two spheres. this collision, or marriage, created the doorway, or vesca pisces, which is also representative of the supreme goddess from which the world was born, the intersection of two circles resembling the vulva, or birth canal, of the said goddess. If we extend this metaphor of the collision, which some scientists today are now embracing as the cause of formation for our own universe according to Membrane, or M-Theory, we are met with two options: one, that these two membranes collided and then repelled away from each other, or (and I would tend to support the latter) they combined, and have been moving ever closer toward each other toward the point where they will one day perfectly overlap, forming a unified circle out of two (the two make one). I support the latter idea because when one examines the understanding of opposites in our brief human culture, one comes to the conclusion that the clarity once maintained between opposites has been, throughout the ages, a thing that is more and more intertwined and greyed to the point where such opposites are now becoming recognized as one and the same. Given the fact that these opposites have serves as the touchstones for our rational though processes for millennia, and that they are now breaking down (i.e. becoming intertwined each with each), it is not surprising that the author of this article finds himself at a loss for the security of rationality, instead torn between knowing and not knowing (which the Upanishads, of course, describes both as courses away from the eternal. See, Isa-Upanishad, IX, "They enter into blind darkness who worship Avidya (not knowing): they fall, as it were, into greater darkness who worship Vidya (knowledge)") I would consider it an accomplishment to arrive at the recognition of the futility of both knowing and not knowing, because it is beyond the veil of reason that this journey lies. I congratulate the author on achieving this awareness, and will for him the courage to see this thought through to its full emanation, unhindered by distractions of the passing sort. Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge in the field of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the Gods.
