The Great Beast Was Here

What if the Apocalypse has already happened? How should we live in a post-Apocalyptic world, when all of the values of the previous one have been destroyed? Aleister Crowley had an answer: we should each live according to our own True Will.
By this he meant that every man and woman must discover his or her own true nature and purpose in this world, and fulfill it. But the guiding principle in living that fulfillment must be love; not love in the sense of mere sentimental affection. Crowley's philosophy further claims, "Man has the right to love as he will: when, where, and with whom he will." Bisexual himself, he formally declared the absolute liberty of consensual sexual expression, with the force of prophetic authority.
In 1904, Crowley received a text as a result of magical invocation: The Book of the Law. The law the book contained may be summed up in these words: "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the law, love under will." With the arrival of this new law, Crowley believed the old world order was completely overturned -- destroyed by fire, as it were -- and a new age dawned. He called his new system Thelema (Greek for "will"), and identified himself with the Great Beast of Revelation. Accordingly, Thelema declares Christianity obsolete, along with all other world religions, even while putting to use their most potent spiritual techniques, symbolism, and mythic narratives.
Thelemites are often practitioners of Magick, understood as the form of occultism developed by Crowley from his training in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and experiences with esoteric religions around the world. His techniques and theories have influenced generations of practitioners of divination, yoga, alchemy, spirit evocation, and astral travel. He was also a pioneer in the modern Western use of entheogens such as mescaline, and his social ideas support the full freedom not only of self-medication, but of self-exploration by such means.
The Order of Oriental Templars, better known as Ordo Templi Orientis or simply O.T.O., is the first religious body to base its work on the Law of Thelema. O.T.O. is essentially a vehicle for organizing and mobilizing under the Law, since we can't expect any sort of deus ex machina to take us to a New Jerusalem. The old social forms are obsolete and oppressive, and humans need social contexts in which to temper and express their individual wills. Crowley introduced the Law of Thelema to O.T.O. in the early decades of the 20th century, but without his leadership, the order went into a dormant period for the thirty years following his death. Starting in the 1970s, surviving members began to reform the constituent groups of the order, and growth has been fairly steady ever since. There are now thousands of active members organized in over sixteen different countries worldwide.
O.T.O. is comprised of two outer "rites" or systems of ceremony, for the purpose of realizing the divine in the human. One is Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica, a church body whose central ritual is a symbolic drama called the Gnostic Mass, intended to cultivate religious ecstasy without moralizing or superstition. Since The Book of the Law affirms that "Every man and every woman is a star," our church requires priestesses as well as priests. The clergy conduct group ceremonies and minister to individual members, but do not serve as intermediaries between the individual member and his or her god. The most important form of deity in Thelema is the personal genius, or "Holy Guardian Angel," which is understood to be unique for each individual. A person baptized in the church affirms: "I will know my own will. I will do my own will. I will rejoice in the will of my god."
The other rite of O.T.O. is Mysteria Mystica Maxima, a set of graduated initiations using the methods of Freemasonry and the ancient mystery cults. Fraternal temple initiation in person may seem somewhat antiquated -- and indeed, the heyday of such work in the United States was the latter half of the 1800s. But mediating technologies deprive us of many of the contacts and sensory channels that previously would have integrated us into important age-old networks of human consciousness. The O.T.O. degrees redress these faults, while developing self-discipline and self-knowledge toward the goals of individual liberty and universal brotherhood.
Another important but still largely unrealized dimension of O.T.O. is the establishment of intentional communities centered on "profess-houses." Crowley briefly operated such a project -- the Abbey of Thelema in Sicily in the 1920s -- and late in life he was making plans for another, to be called the Green Lion, which never came to fruition. The creative opportunity to bring such communities into existence is important to the Thelemic movement as a whole, because despite the basic emphasis on the liberty of the individual, we recognize that many of the most admirable and challenging aspects of human existence can only manifest in cooperation with others.
People today intuitively grasp the obsolescence of many aspects of our social system. The reduction of men and women to "consumers" results in profound alienation compensated only by the most superficial of freedoms. The Law of Thelema challenges us all to find a deeper sort of liberty that can empower us to remake society in a world which has already shifted under our feet.

"...The most superficial of freedoms."
Not exactly...
so very lame...
There will never be profess houses in the US, and least not as envisioned by Crowley, as of course they would legally be classified as houses of prostitution. Even assuming you could convince modern women to have sex with all comers in return for room and board. After all, Profess Houses were really just meant as a mechanism to make it more convenient for Crowley and his buds to get access to regular sex-magick partners, without having to resort to hitting the streets as he so often did.
Of course, the cOTO could just create some lame-ass substitute that they call a "Profess House," just like they've done with Crowley's vision for the EC ("the rubber stamp gang"), the Gnostic Mass (fake Cakes anyone?), etc.
Excellent overview
Very clear and concise overview of Crowley and OTO
Thank you for this article.
I've been curious about how Crowley understood True Will in terms of the sense of individual self. From my experience, True Will is experienced as "Thy Will"--as the will of something beyond moving through me.
In this sense, True Will is not truly mine, but transcends and includes my individual interests, passions, and genius. In fact, my True Will might bring me to do something I know deeply is right even though it's not something my little will would prefer. Was this also Crowley's understanding?
Thanks,

Religious Societyof O.T.O.
Let me get this straight, Allen. Your evidence that Crowley didn't think of O.T.O. as a religious organizationis that he didn't say so in one letter? Well, he did say so in several other places, including the following very plain statement:
"The O.T.O. is the first of the great religious Societies to accept the Law." -- Crowley, Equinox 3, No 1. (which issue is all about the O.T.O.)
What religion, pray tell,
What religion, pray tell, was the O.T.O. a vehicle for under Reuss?
You've misidentified me. Thanks for playing though.
Gnostic Neo-Christianity
Reuss in fact endorsed Crowley's establishment of Thelema and the Gnostic Mass within O.T.O., and he issued his own manifesto for "The Gnostic Templars or Neo-Christians." But I'm not interested in any protracted argument about the nature of O.T.O. under Reuss, since without Crowley and Thelema, Reuss's efforts would have been sterile, and the Order would be extinct. Today's O.T.O. recognizes Reuss as a founding figure, but acknowledges and embraces the various reforms and transformations of the Order under Crowley, as well as the full authority of his duly-appointed successors.

IT WAS A FUCKING JOKE!!!
not just any joke, but a very brilliant and enlightened one.
The Book of the Law reveals the most powerful and beautiful secrets regarding the true nature of humanity's role in the universe, and what better way to protect those secrets out in the open than by the fearful reactions of those that are not ready to comprehend this most subtle and terrifying truth.
Crowley himself said that the intiates must pass through the ordeal of the 'demon crowley' as part of intiation.
Crowley had a brilliant tongue in cheek plan to bring an enlightened age upon the earth, he really was a high magus and master illusionist/artist and the book of the law is a spell and those that think it evil or twisted are simply doing what they are supposed to do, helping to spread the meme through history until it's appropriate time of revealing while protecting it at the same time.
The Book of the Law actually reveals the coming of the messiah of christian and hebrew origin, and Crowley's own moto in the Golden Dawn was " I am the sacred heart of jesus girt about with the serpent"
Crowley's work is only for very high initiates and is not easy - it's a head fuck until you get the very real joke and message underlaying all of it.
it was designed to scare the fuck out of you until you get it, and boy what a funny joke it all is :)

Crowley
Has someone been reading R.A.W.'s books? He figured out that Crowley's work was all coded. One has to remember the time period in which Crowley lived. It wasn't just that is was politically incorrect to write about using Tantra (sex magic), Drugs (psilocybin mushrooms, peyote, heroin, etc. And btw, Crowley was not a heroin addict; he used it not only to explore "circuit one" consciousness, but to hone & test his will. Crowley chased the Dragon without getting burnt, due to his ability to obey the simple law of never doing it more than once a week, at most),Yoga, manipulating the Jungian archtypes or "gods" through Rituals, etc. in order to attain higher consciousness and perform true Magick, it was still taboo.
But it wasn't so taboo that Crowley had to code his books so thoroughly. He did indeed have a wry and even sardonic sense of humor. In "Comsic Trigger," Robert Anton Wilson explains how, in Crowley's "Book of Lies," Chapter 69, "The Way to Succeed, The Way to Suck Eggs," is a reference/innuendo on the Tantric position of 69, where one "suck-seeds" (Succeeds), or masters the Art of "Sucking Eggs." See, according to Tantric belief, the secretions of a woman's "flower" are life-giving, as is the man's seed. This is also what Crowley meant when he said "he sacrificed 150 virgin boys a month;" meaning that, by giving his seed to a woman, he was--in the way radical pro-lifers see things--akin to 'sacrificing children.' Crowley despised sexual repression, and he was also a pranskter. He was many things: genius, madman, mountaineer, magician, and prankster. Personally, I would rather just read R.A.W., who has already done a great job of "de-coding" Crowley, and Timothy Leary, too, as he learned much from them.He was friends with Leary. I recommend, for those unfamiliar with Robert Anton Wilson, to start with "Comsic Trigger-Final Secret of the Illuminati," where Wison explores Crowley, Leary, the 23 Enigma, The Illuminati, Sirius A & B, E.T.s, reality maps, metaprogramming, etc. I also highly recommend "Prometheus Rising." Colin Wilson is another excellent writer; I highly rec. both "The Occult," and "The Outsider."

As usual the OTO tries the 'ole "look over there" trick to distract from its embarrassingly seamy underside. Pray tell, brother, is a minerval a "member" or not? It's a simple question, no?
As Sutin's book was written before the especially embarrassing and potentially explosive events of the last couple years, a much better place to start would be http://tinyurl.com/otogunman (gee, I wonder where he got the little red BoL?), and more interesting links on The OTO Gunman can be found scattered amongst my impish humor at http://lvxluther.livejournal.com .

apologies
yes, agreed that was a great book
pretty much agree and you nailed the point
most of the horrible stories about crowley were started by crowley himself who insisted that he had a notorious image. part of the point of this teaching is that HUMAN BEINGS ARE NOT IDEAS nor are they the IDEAS they are promoting or discussing. this is one of the biggest teachings hidden in liber al and crowley was that prophet to reveal that truth.
ideas are ideas. (ideas can also be understood as 'spirits')
Human beings are mysteries and spirits are only a component of the mystery of human being.
I would add though that just because you can't find the punchline it does not mean it isnt there;-)
most thelemites or OTO members apparently don't get the joke
If anyone wants a more keen insight into crowley ..i would not talk to most people who are into crowley or OTO members (some but not all). most of them from my experience don't get the joke either and take stuff way to seriously.
if anyone is interested in learning about the more enlightened interpretation I would suggest consulting the writings of Robert Anton Wilson, who updated the joke a bit more with DISCORDIAN society.
and all this trap about murray and the OTO, who cares? does anyone actually think that is a reflection on Crowley or the Book of the Law? it's like saying jesus is responsible for jerry falwell or Muhammad for Osama Bin Laden.
I liked the article although it wasn't that reveling into the true mysteries of the book of the law. fyi the true title of the book of the law is The Book of the Law of God.
anything freaky interpreted inside of it is just a projection of your own mind, which is partly how the spell works. The true meaning of the book of the law is MYSTERY and LOVE, all else is a curse! (your own)

Hah hah , the vanity of the magicians!
Well, i have to say, you don't know what you are referring to here, and I suggest it is your own vanity you are projecting out there since you are disregarding a highly respected system of occultism that most occult scholars would agree was advanced, thelemic or not. Although you claim to have studied and practiced, I see no evidence of that in your critique.
Secondly, I am not a practicing ceremonial magician nor am i member of the OTO or any magical society.
I am a writer and philosopher and I have researched many systems and have had profound experiences with all of them. I have deep respect for Liber al as I think any scholar would or anyone interested in the great mystery
so already I can tell you have issue with MYSTERY since I am a mystery, you dont know me and you assumed a few things were you were in error. So we have to be careful with our truth values a bit here.
I want to proceed with the rest of your literature you spit out...if you don't mind.

such as? are you making a claim that crowley is NOT for advanced intiates? are you making the claim that there are not layers of cabbalistic and hermetic code all throughout the book of the law, and one does not need any advance study to interpret or understand them?
What is your argument here?
Crowley was a genius, but that doesn't mean much. My point is he became a Dark Brother when he , after a long struggle, succumbed to his aristocratic lineage and accepted Liber-AL into his magical work.
Thelema is a tantric system, meaning it deals with the harmony and resolution of opposites and if you understood that, you would know that it is the intention of the intiate in such a system to become both LIGHT and DARK and not choose one over the other.
Harmonizing the light with the dark is union, which is also called LOVE.
Apparently, you have not chosen so well;-).
bizarro mason conspiracy theories do not reflect well upon your level of understanding

Are you aware that
There really isn't much to
There really isn't much to tell. Crowley did have a student, Martha Kuntzel, who was enamored of the idea of giving Hitler a copy of Crowley's Liber Al vel Legis. Crowley though her obsession with Hitler was unbecoming and eventually the two parted ways. Crowley was largely critical of Nazism and Fascism and had the honor of being removed from Sicily by Mussolini on "moral" rounds.
If you're interested in some of the occult underground in Germany and Austria previous to the rise of the Nazis see The Occult Roots of Nazism by Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke. If you want a highly circumstantial run through Crowley's life (preferably after reading the previously suggested Do What Thou Wilt) see Richard B Spence's Secret Agent 666 published by Feral House.

Often the headdress of Isis depicts the full moon between curved horns and has the shape of the musical instrument that the Egyptians played in her honor called the sistrum.
