Going West

crop circlelp.jpg

I will be visiting the West Coast for a few weeks, doing a number of talks and also teaching a class at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), in San Francisco, on 3 consecutive weekends, from Feb 28 – March 15.

This Thursday, February 26, I will be speaking in Los Angeles at Project Butterfly ($30, includes dinner and live music). Crucial details can be found here:

The CIIS course is a new adventure for me, and there are still a few spaces available for auditors or full participants. Contact CIIS for details on enrolling. As well as delving into the archetypal and prophetic dimensions of the 2012 issue, we will discuss the social and political aspects of this global transformation, and explore practical means for individuals to contribute.

Toward 2012 (3 units) with Daniel Pinchbeck and Sean Kelly- Three weekends, February 28 & March 1, March 7 & 8, March 14 & 15.

This course will investigate from a variety of disciplinary perspectives (history, philosophy, social theory, astronomy, design science, religious studies, psychology, esotericism, anthropology, cognitive science, etc.) the recent emergence in our culture of a collective focus on the year 2012 as a symbolic threshold of transformation. In addition to learning the facts about the influential phenomenon of the "2012 meme," students will acquire an appreciation of how and why a multidisciplinary approach is essential for fully understanding any complex human phenomenon, and will also gain practice in balancing respect and critique when engaged in dialogue about one's own culture and beliefs.

"Psychedelics & Spirituality: A Dialogue with Daniel Pinchbeck & Dharmanidhi Sarasvati"

Throughout human history the use of psychoactive substances has played a prominent role in spiritual development. There are differing opinions on the importance or necessity of psychoactives for the contemporary spiritual aspirant. In this discussion, two experts in the field of human consciousness will highlight divergent opinions on the merits of psychedelic use in the quest for spiritual growth.

Details on location, time, etc., coming soon.

Good luck to you, Daniel!

Good luck to you, Daniel, for trying to change people's thoughts and attitudes!

That crop picture from Savernake Forest in 2006 was one of a series that showed advanced topics in spacetime wormhole theory.

That one in particular showed a Roman ring with four wormholes, only two of which were active: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormhole

or

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_ring

What happens apparently when you try to travel instantly through spacetime, is that any single-wormhole connections get short-circuited by a huge flow of vacuum energy, and hence are unstable.

But if some advanced race were to link four wormholes together in a ring, then instant spacetime travel becomes theoretically allowed according to our current understanding of physics.

The unknown race making those crop pictures has evidently gone a little further than us in that kind of technology already!

What about seatown

None of your tour stops are up in Seattle. If you find the time and resources you should think about making your way up here to give a talk or two.

Wondered if you'd been bothered by the Letcher asides

I searched to see if Andy Letcher's comments about you have come up. Since they didn't I thought I'd quote them. Your last post seem typical of any seeker who knows at some point they have to drain their minds a bit -- having had  them suddenly been rendered far more open than usual. (One doesn't want to be a sucker, even if we're pretty sure we've seen ghosts, n'est-ce pas?) Letcher in his new book about fly agaric, how Wasson was a liar, and a bit about T. McK., sees you as T.M.'s heir apparent. er, "latest pretender to the throne of psychonaut in chief" Shroom, p. 291. You come up later and he is a bit kinder, but wants to like mushrooms, it seems, without them seeming to have to be a gateway to world-saving consciousness. Did not know if you had thoughts. Have a good time out west. Considering the Rolling Stone and other articles, I imagine things roll off the back eventually. I ask my editor to warn me if I get mean letter, though. T- Wolfe.

Thought's on Quincunxxx comment.

I didn't mean to be particularly challenging, especially since, if anything, I tend to wax syncophantic. That said, one wants to feel on a site like this, if nowhere else, that he or she is part of a large discussion which includes the author, who you have taken time to read and think about. So it's nice to see responses, yeah

I guess I was thinking, when I wrote above, that as much as we admire people with renown, and may crave it for ourselves, the blowback for putting any art out there can be devastating, especially if one is a big success. Look at the vendetta against Thomas Chong; the complaint noted his movies mocked law enforcement. The DEA is vindictive. So maybe all Letcher is saying is that being perceived as occupying the throne of drug guru (probably a term no one would want, unless he was some precocious ninth grader selling weed and Adderall to his gym teacher) has questionable value.

There is honor too. Think of those who paved the wave for free speech: obscenity trials against Joyce, Lawrence and Burroughs; Medicine wome and Giordano Bruno burnt at the stake. Success threatens people, but mostly those who have it without being ready.  After winning the Oscar for French Connection (director and picture), William Friedkin saw a shrink for the first time in whole life; he was convinced he was a con artist, artistic scum.

Some people see the 18th Major Arcana THE MOON, with its two pillars, as posing the question: Will you be who truly are (and walk through the pillars), or your dutiful, scared self, which supposedly conforms to societal norms and walks around them? (Of course, societal norms include genocide).

The Moon card shows  what Masons do when they walk between the two pillars, it is also an allusion to Odysseus enduring the pain of facing Scylla and Charybdis. From what I have read of Mr. Pinchbeck, he takes a lot of risks, writing passages that his younger, jaded, agnostic self would, I guess, ridicule.

One only hopes the rewards are commensurate with the challenges. In fact, they should far outweigh the pain. Lenny Bruce paid too hard a price for truth telling - it's one reason I am wary of fame (the paparazzi kind being the worst side effect, but I never worry I will be a movie star). Enjoy the new moon in Pisces
