Freegans Forever

Freegans.jpg

At the risk of employing a clunky allusion to popular culture—the Freegans are escaping the Matrix! Freegan philosophy is centered on the deliberate and active disengagement from the theater of conventional economy and global consumption.

Employing strategies of waste reclamation (dumpster diving); eco-friendly transportation (hitchhiking); rent-free housing (squatting); voluntary joblessness and an overall concern for the environment, Freegans hope to undermine a greedy economic system and noxious social paradigm. Though it may sound like a group of misguided anarchists, the Freegans are actually quite organized and offer useful resources on their site, including: upcoming events, safety tips and market recall alerts. That’s Freegan awesome!

Blake Freitag holds a B.A. in English Literature from Arizona State University and studied independently for his M.F.A with poet Norman Dubie. He has worked for BOMB Magazine and the Council for Literary Magazines and Presses, along with various non-profits and cooperatives. Currently, he is in the developmental stages of his own magazine project, wherein he will eulogize his youth and sound his barbaric yawp from the rooftops of locally parked cars.

Author Heather Rogers (A Dirty Secret) just did a nyc talk with the Freegans about trash. Here's the link.

An Objection

I share the "Freegan" concern for the environment, but the tenants of the practice seem misguided. I'm sorry, but in what way is dumpster diving (gathering food manufactured by "the system"), hitchhiking (relying on the fossil-fuel expenditures of others), squatting (occupying buildings erected by "the system"), and "voluntary joblessness" (unemployment) escaping the "Matrix"? Or undermining a social paradigm, for that matter? This seems like a rather naive reincarnation of 60s ideology, which confuses parasitism with self-sufficiency and self-righteous posturing with revolutionary purpose.

Please...

Mr. Freitag, if that is your real name, how dare you attempt to overthrow the free-markets by spreading such sensationalist blather? I mean, really, do you expect us to believe this utopian garden of eden that you're spewing? Go back to ASU and pay attention this time!
