Food on Drugs

For the first time ever the FDA has exposed the amount of antibiotics used in factory farm animals. The report says that in 2009 there were 29 million pounds of antibiotics given to America's livestock. The purpose of continuously dosing these animals with antibiotics is to fatten them up and keep them from getting sick from the unsanitary environments in which they are raised.

This report is just more proof of the lack of concern not only for the health of the critters we consume, but for the health of the general public as well. Although the report wasn't very substantial and the FDA released it without comment, it seems to be a step in the right direction toward mainstream exposure on the subject. There is the realization that life is being devalued--but at least now we're owning up to it.

What more reason?...

..to stop eating other creatures?...Not only the chemicals, but the cruelty and disrespect for our animals is barbaric. It is very sad to see these animals suffer so terribly, and realize that as long as we continue to buy meat products, we are a part of this horrible culture.

The food safety bill completed its convoluted path through Congress Tuesday. An earlier parliamentary blemish in the U.S. Senate and partisan bickering within the House of Representatives placed the bill's future in question. However, both chambers cooperated to fix the bill giving the Food and drug administration more authority to prevent tainted food from entering the general population.

The amount when looked at in numbers appears shocking. I am in no way "in favor" of injecting our food supply with millions of pounds of chemicals. Although I thought of a question while reading the article. How many pounds of antibiotics are ingested by the human population of the US each year?
