[Action Alert] • The fight to preserve our online freedom is a seemingly never-ending one. With all the controversy surrounding SOPA and PIPA, you may not have heard of ACTA, or "Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement," which threatens the basic infrastructure of the Internet as we know it. ACTA is an agreement between countries besides the United States, which means it can be passed without the approval of Congress and the Supreme Court.  

ACTA's ostensible goal is to enforce copyright laws and stop counterfeited goods. However, its pull extends to not only blatant copyright violation, but to everything that falls under the loose and ambiguous definition of intellectual property. Essentially, our freedom to share any kind of media or copyrighted ideas will be completely revoked, and sites with user-distributed content such as Youtube will not be able to survive under such an act. All internet users will be subject to intense and invasive surveillance to assure the act's effectiveness.

"In his famous drawing, sometimes called the Vitruvius Man, there is Man in a Circle and in a Square. This famous geometrical drawing graphically describes the problem; Leonardo portrays the ‘fall’ of humankind in a singular manner, circle to square. Man in the Square is a victim of this seemingly irreconcilable discrepancy – a measure of the human being’s disharmony, as it were. The point is further made by observing that the centre of the Circle-Man is located at his navel, while in the Square-Man it is at his reproductive organ. That circle is ‘heaven’, the square is ‘earth’. A plunge into materiality, Leonardo notes, nails the human creature to a sexual atavism that becomes his cross." Do We Really Have To Fight?

Good god Faye, take a chill pill. I appreciate the information, but can we please do away with or at least tone down the alarmist over-reactions and contentious language? I'm a little weary from all of the alerts, and battles, and fights. I thought that RS was about changing and raising consciousness. The focus of this article supports continuation of a fear-based consciousness, and entrenchment in, and perpetuation of, an Us vs Them mentality. Consider some of the key words used in the article: "Fight...threatens...never-ending...controversy...enforce...blatant...revoked...survive...intense...invasive." I understand that this is an important issue. But, hows about reframing our approach from a place of stillness instead of triggering people's fight or flight response? And, just for the record, revolutionary changes have happened in our world without the internet and electronic media.
