“Had you told me a few years ago that I’d be here in Austin tonight talking with all of you about Jesus, aliens, and ayahuasca, I would have laughed my ass off.  As a cynical secular materialist, I scoffed at anything mystical.  I thought only direct political action made any real change in the world.  As you may have guessed, that perspective has been turned on its head.”

Sixty-five people sat crammed on the shaggy beige carpet of the suburban, seventies-style living room that Monday night.  They spilled into the hallway and dining area, leaning forward to hear from the back.  Wide colorful tapestries of illuminated Buddhas, zodiac charts, and complex geometrical Shipibo patterns covered the dank wood paneled walls so indicative of the aesthetically challenged “Me Decade.”  Ceramic manifestations of Shiva, Shakti, and Ganesh cluttered the fireplace mantle and plasma TV shelf.

I propped my back against the fireplace wall and fought against extreme fatigue.  I had spent the weekend in ceremony with a Brazilian shaman, one of the heroic healing masters who travel the underground railroad of ayahuasca scenes sprouting up across America.  I doubt I’ll ever understand why the DEA regards the most powerful medicine I’ve encountered, the sacred brew of the Amazon, as a Schedule-1 substance worth banning.  Wearing a vest of seashells and a leather headband with yellow feathers sticking up from the back, the short, prune-faced shaman had me gulp down several viscid cups of the nasty tasting hallucinogenic drink the two previous afternoons.  I hardly slept that weekend and considered calling off tonight’s talk.

But now, several years into an often sloppy and sometimes dangerous spiritual initiation, I was accustomed to ego dismemberment.  Although exhausted, my body felt clear and light from having transmuted so many heavy vibrations over the weekend.  And besides, I lived for these talks; these were stories I loved to tell, especially since I forged through so many challenges to accumulate these experiences.

The crowd had the familiar look that my presentations tended to attract.  Most were 20 to 40 years old with salon-sculpted haircuts accented by highlights, wearing horned rim glasses, skinny black jeans, vintage printed Tees, and American Apparel cotton hoodies.  You could easily mistake them for Pabst-chugging hipsters if not for their accessories – spiral plug earrings based on the golden ratio, mandala-shaped necklaces, Peruvian indigenous bracelets, and bright shawls designed using Mandelbrot mathematics.  And I fit right in with my tan furry-lined faux-suede jacket, blue jeans, Burning Man multicolor necklace and turquoise Yawanawá beaded bracelet.  I regretted not bringing the black Australian cowboy hat that I usually broke out when I left New York City, a way to reconnect with my Colorado roots.  This was Texas after all.

During the earlier meet-and-greet over carrots and humus, attendees shared their passion for sustainable aquaponic food systems, non-debt-based complimentary currencies, and the politics of local rain harvesting – visionary, but practical approaches to social change.  They were far more grounded and engaged than the angel-and-fairy-obsessed New Age flock, the sort of self-involved meditators that I studiously avoided during my life as a political activist.

This group resembled others I had encountered over the last year.  But with a twist.  Ten months ago, I would have been lucky to attract a dozen people to the corner of a coffee shop or vegan restaurant for these talks, which I playfully and presumptuously titled, “Opening the World’s Heart Chakra.”  But now they were packing out.  We even had to stop promoting them too early in order not to overrun the free, borrowed spaces I used.  Still, my dream of a solar-powered, permaculture-loving Austin was kept in check.  The array of consumers purchasing cheap Chinese and Ecuadorian produced clothes and electronics at all the Targets, Kmarts, and Wal-marts strewn across town vastly outnumbered our crew.  Radical mystics and spiritual activists like us were the foolhardy underdogs throwing compostable paper wrenches into the gears of the massive consumer machine.

“Before we start, let me ask everyone a question,” I said to the group.  “How many of you feel that you are personally experiencing some type of initiatory or healing process?”  A number of hands languidly raised in the air, half bent at the elbows.  “No, really.  Raise your hand high so we can all see.”  Sixty-three arms stretched firmly upwards, leaving only two people with hands in their laps.  “Look around at your brothers and sisters in the room.”  I had never said the phrase “brothers and sisters” before, not with a straight face, but there was something about the brutal cleansing of the weekend’s ceremony that led me to add some sermon-like flair.

“How many places in the country would you see this many hands raised for that question?” I said to them.  “Something is going on here, something powerful.”

As if we had just chanted an ancient incantation, the room suddenly buzzed with with an unseen but visceral energy that brought smiles and sparkly eyes to the crowd.  They gazed at each other, sensing the potential that comes from manifesting change together.  As the only one standing up, I acted as an antennae or lightning rod for the whole group.  A warm energetic vibration rose up my spine and spread across my shoulder blades, expanding my heart center.  I couldn’t help but laugh with gratitude at the continually astonishing absurd life I had stumbled into.  After a long, formidable journey, I encountered a touch of the mystical almost every day.

“Okay, everybody.  Put down your hands and let’s get on with this story.”

Austin

Splendid! That night was such a rallying point for us here in Austin. The inspiration helped spawn Evolver Austin and now the SoulRise festival. Almost everyone who is planning the festival was in attendance that night. In fact, most of us met there for the first time. Congrats on the release of your book Jonathan, visit us again anytime!

Thanks David, I'm hoping the

Thanks David, I'm hoping the upcoming book tour will help galvanize more luminous agents of change!

The book actually goes into

The book actually goes into quite a bit of detail of where this dominator paradigm likely came from, stemming from Old Testament views on reality.  The Gnostics seemed to understand this very well and saw the redeeming power of "the Christ within" (and higher consciousness) as a way to liberate us from the archon-like forces that have a stranglehold over much of the world.

the double sided coin

Entheogens without teachings often lead to confusion, the inspiration is all there but without the context of a structure within which to view the experience one often becomes prey to delusion and fear. i applaud the spirit but think that people can get even more from the experience if they can understand that it is all the impersonal yet beautiful play of the mind and not some external thing or alien coming down to visit them. This is the view of Dzogchen the highest Buddhist path, that all is self and all is pure and everything is just a complex play of the mind to be enjoyed and seen for what it is without falling prey to illusion of duality. If all is self and self is empty then what is there that we need to fear or even worry about ever. When vision is an obstacle we need a friend, when vision is a friend light a fire. The site deals with the beautiful combination of mindtech and entheogens, a fabulous partnership. Adamas

Mind Versus Entities

I used to think everything was all mind with these until a number of ayahuasca experiences changes all of that.  Suddenly, I was visiting by guides (some of even a galactic origin) that would give me advice or do healings on me.  I also met some darker beings that needed illuminated from my family line.  For me, it seems to be this dance of we are all one on some level, but we're also in a realm of differentiation as well, which can be played out in wild, fantastic astral realms far beyond what my logical mind can perceive.

initiation and healing

It's interesting to think that initiation and healing come paired together. I'm currently undergoing both, for sure.

Initiation and Healing Anyone?

I wonder if that's part of the overall initiatory process or/and the times we are in when there's such a need for healing on a mass scale.  I'm just curious here: who reading this is going through this kind of process and what was your first initiation into it?

My journey (and this book's journey) starting with seeing energy fields (auras) on my 30th birthday after what you might call a "galactic" visition.

After having established a

After having established a relationship with the mushroom, my formal initiation was a direct confrontation with a goddess entity. It was essentially an instance of possession and communion. It was an energetic healing experience for sure, having this other mind literally permeate my being. Nothing short of ecstatic bliss. That was followed later on in the year by an experience that in retrospect meets all the criteria of the abduction phenomena. That was also a healing experience, where I was being looked over from above, and smaller machines surveyed my body and probed it energetically, with probosci of sorts. That session culminated in full ego dissolution, which I certainly didn't have a real notion of until it happened.

Anyhow, it seems these things are a culmination of many years of exploration and following a path that really didn't have a goal. I've certainly traveled further than I expected. The real healing seems to be in the integration of the experiences. Assimilating these dramatic reorientaions toward life and death and my own sense of self.

Electric Jesus

Fabulous, affirming and what excites me even more...its GLOBAL. I write here, from Australia where I work, as a Psychic Consultant and qualified Counsellor and several dozen other things. What can I tell you..I'm busy!! As has been occurring with incredible regularity and clarity, all of my 58 years...I was 'directed' to this site by a 'quirk of Fate'...and I now see why. Like minded individuals who are HEARING their Spirit Conections 'calling to them'and who are prepared to embrace those connections. I hasten to add, though, no 'hocus pocus' here folks, I'm a REAL Psychic, accuratley predicting since I was 3 years old...after dreaming the murder of a neighbour. My reputation as an 'innocent' was....over!! Not to worry, I love the work that I do and I do things that the 'New Age' set are totally freaked out by, here in nearby Byron Bay...whatevah!!  I 'miskeyed' on my computer as I was discussiing Daniel Pinchbecks book 'Return Of Quetzalcoatl'...(happens to me all the time folks...so I'm a tad blase' about it) and the synchronicity said 'Sign Up Belle'. Down here in the antipodes,we are experiencing the same evolution of Spirit. It's wonderful news. I now even have Doctors, and variouos other medical professionals, actually seeking out my skills, where the former attitude was one of ridicule with a side order of 'fear'. That 'crapola' is still 'selling' in some venues...but one Universe at a time...yeah? Also, my home is fast becoming a real 'melting pot' of professionals and many 'lay people' who come to 'share' with me, their own personal stories...and I am amazed at how well the 'spread' of this, incredibly important information,is. Amazed and delighted. This influx of information is also accompanied by the number of Spiritual Awakenings which are occurring here. Indeed, the Physician(now a frfiend) in question has diagnosed people with this, openly, but has so far not been able to persuade other Medicos' to share his views just yet. Instead he visits me each week to 'download'...and 'share'. I thoroughly enjoyed Jonathans' 'piece' and believe that this growing 'connection' of like mindeds is the best news since...Adam was rumoured to be an infant. Kudos to you all on Reality Sandwich...what a nice change from the bombastic BS of the so called, 'ordinary society' and it's associated anti-media, as I refer to it. I wish you all the absolute best in all of your dealings during this transformational time and will enjoy watching this movement grow into the magnificent image of Mankind & Humanity...as we SHOULD be experiencing it. Thank you all...PS Loved the Daniel Pinchbeck/Russel Brand piece...fabulous. Always, Annabelle (Aunty A) xo

The Pain of Healing

Great Article Jonathan. I've been thinking about initiation and healing recently, and it seems to me that actually coming to terms with the fullness of our place in the cosmos won't happen for humanity without extensive discomfort. I mean, so much of what we do is for the purpose of defending against what we can't handle, the most frightening of which is uncertainty. I feel like our species is going to have to go through a period of "complete struggle" on every level of consciousness and being to come to terms with uncertainty. The certainties that language depends on are not exempt either...we'll see how that goes...

*aliens

Labeling something "alien" implies separation from the self, or on a larger scale, separation from humans. I just finished your book Jonathan and wanted to express how I hear the use of "alien" in your book, as well as every other person on the ancient alien tip or ET experiences. I humbly feel that these spirits are no more "alien" than some one is from another cultural far distant from our own. Is everything we experience and feel not an expression of the unborn, the undying and the uncreated? Are these being not of that? They are expressions like us. You had a "burner-barrel" experience discussing that the greys too have potential for white light healing and that they are not all trying to live off our hate. We are all spirits expressing ourselves on earth or on sirius or on a saucer. I suppose when I hear "alien" what comes to mind is the cold nuts and bolt spaceships with dastardly motives, something one might find the History Channel entertaining. Graham Hancock's "Supernatural" fascinates a perspective that dispels the nuts and bolts abduction stories (with meticulously researched data) and asserts the awakening of the 3rd eye to the myriad realms and beings that lay within us and all around us, superimposed upon our half awake experience, is what we are truthfully experiencing when we have an alien, fairey, angelic, serpent ladder rainbow experience, via entheogens, altered states of consciousness, or spontaneous pineal gland releases of DMT.  In other words, one who claims alien abduction never leavs the bed, physically.

I enjoyed your sharing of experiences and ate the book up! I had the library I work at add it to the collection. Quick question. Its currently non-fiction 200.92, do you see it more as a memoir of do you want it in the spirituality section? Either way it will sit on the non-fic display shelf right in the public eye and I'll encourage many inhibited and unleashed psychonaughts to it's pages. word! Chloe Hartstein
