Boys to Girls

Recent scientific research finds that man's addiction to chemicals -- including pesticides and birth control pills -- is harming male offspring in species across the world. The report found that male fish in British lowland rivers develop eggs in their testes, 40 percent of male cane toads have become hermaphrodites in areas of Australia, male alligators in Florida suffer from lowered testosterone and higher estrogen levels, and baby boys who have been exposed to chemicals in pregnancy are being born with smaller penises and feminized genitals. According to Dr. Pete Myers, one of the world's foremost authorities on the matter: "We have thrown 100,000 chemicals against a finely balanced hormone system, so it's not surprising that we are seeing some serious results. It is leading to the most rapid pace of evolution in the history of the world."

A much-needed correction?
Gaia's response to an excess of male energy.
Isn't one of the meme's in the "conscious evolution" movement the idea that we NEED an influx of feminine energy to counteract the misguided male energy of exploitation and competition? There are no accidents
Having female genitalia
Gaia's response to an excess of male energy? That's a bit harsh.
Like Bill, I don't think it's a male/female energy thing. I'm all for balance and equality, but honestly, the issue the article addresses really is just a case of men and women dumping toxic crap into fragile ecosystems, and not giving a stuff about the consequences. I really don't believe Gaia would poison herself to correct a perceived imbalance of male/female energy. People are causing the imbalance through sheer selfishness, apathy, and stupidity, and it's high time we took responsibility, both as individuals and as societies. Er, end rant, I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir. :-)
But wow, what's with the headline, "It's official: men are really the weaker sex". Huh, "mutated polar bear penis" not eye-catching enough? You have to wonder at the maturity of sub-editors at major rags, trivialising a serious issue with a Mars vs Venus battle of the sexes. It's depressing.

I read somewhere that males are actually disappearing
and sometime within the next 150,000 to 10 million years, the Y chromosome will disintegrate completely
Dreams Entrance our Flowing Reality
Bye-bye, boys...
Yes, I had heard that as well. The Y chromosome has shrunk like 50% or something in the last 100,000 years or so.
There is a lizard species that has already got rid of males. I forget their name. Every lizard is a clone of its mother. The crazy thing is; they still have to emulate the sex act in order for the eggs to fertilize.
They go get humped by another girl lizard, and it activates the hormones that do the job.
Weird, huh?
Nothing like Nature to change your views on gender roles. ^_~

re: A much needed correction?
agreed but with understanding
I agree with Bill that the correction should not be poisonous chemicals, but then again, a fever is actually burning the germs to death, which sometimes hurts teh person more than the germs , but I can totally understand how gbv23 would feel about that. Males historically and culturally have been directly responsible for a lot of war, colonialism, destruction of land. I think that women are starting to gain some of thier much needed and worthy influence and energy back into the balance, but to call so drastically is rushing a bit
Dreams Entrance our Flowing Reality
While I don't deny an
While I don't deny an irresponsibly strong focus on the male energy in classical and modern society, females are not completely innocent either. They choose the mates; and boys want very few things more than to impress girls.
It is as much the idea of what it means to be a man that is out of balance, as the actual male energy...imho.

Nothing wrong with male energy

I'm cool with the chillin out of energy from both sexes that may be expressed in destructive ways. Both sexes have ways that they hinder the growth and expression of the other.
I see a difference between Mature use of energy and Immature use. There are tons of little boys out there disguising themselves as full grown men. There are lots of them. I see that shit as destructive.
There are also lots of little girls out there throwing hissy fits left and right and messing with others.
Then there are those how have earned the title of being some grown-ups, in the coolest sense of the word.
People who take responsibility for their actions and treat others respect.
And when they make mistakes they own up to it.Some real partnership people down to build something cool.
I think we all struggle on the daily to fully integrate the immature energies and express them in mature ways. But I think that's where nobility comes from. The striving to live more like a Man and Woman.
My thoughts, anyway.
burning woman
The need for an influx of feminine energy is not an indictment of men. It is simply saying men & women need more balance, receptivity, more feeling, less numbness, less ego defense, more being, less doing, less force masquerading as power. If our actions were balanced, they would have power, and be both feminine and masculine at once. As it is, they are nothing but force and imbalance.
Anyway, why is it Burning Man and not Burning Woman? Maybe because women are the ones communities burn at stakes...What is being burned in Nevada is force and imbalance - false power.

Is there a need for an influx?

Sounds cool to me Amy, for the most part.
What I'm saying is that there isn't really that muchintegrated male 'energy' out there.
I am alluding to a very interesting book titled,'King, Warrior, Magician, Lover' written from a Jungian perspective, which makes the argument that are many grown adults, who identify with the gender role of a male, that are still acting from a boy state.
They have not yet integrated certain energies within theirpsyche, and in so doing act out a false representation of manhood. The Lover within the this psychological model is very sensitive and has little ego defense as well as being receptive.
Personally, I don't define the state of being emotionally numb as particularly 'male' I think that it isn't gender specific. I see it as a result of a trauma.Which can be inflicted from a number of sources.
My personal thoughts are that there has been a great rift between the genders, and each have sought revenge uponone another in different ways. Some but not all men have been able to coerce some but not allwomen, throughout history, with the threat of physical force. Some but not all women have then sought to achieve goalsthrough passive aggressive means. Emotional manipulation.
All the men and women in the above scenerio, according to the authors of the stated book have not fully become MEN and WOMEN.And until that happens many messed up things will more than likely occur.
the universe is more encompassing than the stuff inside it
Sounds cool

I've never really heard of gender identification as pathological. Do you mean identifying with a gender is a pathology, or too much gender identification is pathological?
I dig the musical simile, I'm with it. Breaking it down to the riddim science.
The studying of gender roles seems like pretty fascinating stuff.Recently, I have been thinking about this stuff within the culture of Hip-Hop.
Someone recommended this movie 'Beyond Beats and Rhymes' which is a very cool documentary assessing the idea of 'Manhood' within most of Hip-Hop culture.
Such a great idea. And it was very well donel. It can be seen for free on Google Video.
hypermasculinity, homophobes, et al
yeah, I mean that hypermasculinity and the women who seek it in men are patholigical - the types of gender identification that are sometimes on Jerry Springer. Homophobes are another example. People who are blinded by the culture of gender - latent homosexuals, people whose fear keeps them imprisoned to a narrow range of self-experience in gender and gender expression. Silence, emptiness and mindfulness could really help relieve of some of their baggage, but for most, mindfulness is not part of their culture - except when tragedy befalls them...

Right On Amy. Diggin the clarification.I couldn't agree more.
Hypermasculinity gets old real fast. When one's gender role gets in the way of fully expressing oneself as an individual then I think that is very sad.And that happens a lot with guys.
And that goes across the board no matter what ethnicity or class.Though I see different representations of thiswithin specific class structures and ethnic clusters.
I've been heavily involved within A (I won't say 'THE' because there are so many nodes within this culture, like other great cultures)Hip-Hop scene for many years, and it is something I have seenrepeated lots over and over, Hypermasculinity I mean.I find it boring and annoying.
I mention the documentary "Beyond Beats and Rhymes" againbecause this is the first movie I have seen challenging the hyper-masculine pathology, as you call it, within Hip-Hop.
And it also branches out to a great critique of this stuff going on in our culture as well.
There are also Senators with the same view point. One does not need to be on Jerry Springer to fall for that trap.
But straight up Masculinity I think is fun. Just being a dude.A man who is cool with the feminine and constantly working on deepening one's relationship with her. That I Love. And I see that represented within some pockets of Hip-Hop. And I go there every Monday night.
I have also noticed amongst some guys, a rejection of Masculinity. A complete throw the baby out with the bath water type thing.I consider this a bit unnerving, at times. Straight guys downing themselves for being male. I don't see that as the answer.I do not have bunches of experience with many of these guys, just because the scenes I usually hang out in doesn't represent many in droves. But my criticism doesn't run too deep at men who may carry themselves this way.
As long as cats have looked upon themselves and questioned why they behave the way they have been programmed is way cooler than living the unexamined life.
On the real, I see so many different types of male the more I look at it. I got friends who are 'dudes' who are into busting chops and smacking each other in the face every so often, just to be jack asses. And usually it's just fun light hearted stuff.
I have friends who will have nothing to do with any type of sparring and that's understood.
Homophobes are annoying as well as the homosexual who knows you are not gay but will still try to flirt.
Guys who say gross sexist shit in a bar while there is a woman around angers me. The next question would be, "What about if she is not there?"
And I admit, at times I let many things slide when it comes to sexist comments. Because I am working through many things myself.I won't pretend to be Mr. Enlightened upon all things discussed on these boards. But I'll be straight up about it all.
That being said, I have come to the defense of women on more than one occasion when they were being verbally and physically assaulted in public places. That was something instilled in me somewhere along the line, and I consider that part of being a man.
And I have also found myself within very uncomfortable situations with a long term girlfriend I had, whom I loved very deeply. And we went to some places that I hope never to go to with another lover ever again.
In the immortal words of Pat Benatar, "Love is a Battlefield" and I'm all for continually striving for more peace.
I've been thinking a lot lately about gender role stereotypes and how everyday hardly even discusses this stuff.I'm glad that we areCheers
clowns can be real men
Diggin on you, too, PA.
I checked out the promo for "Beyond Beats and Rhymes". It looks really excellent, something culture sorely needs. And the filmmaker, talking about his work, uses the word “hypermasculine” several times.
I am a hip hop fan, too. I have been since first hearing Public Enemy and NWA in 1989. Rage makes incredible music.
In the 90s I was in a band that you could call “hip-hop.” No computers, a live drummer, guitar, bass and two rappers. Here’s a rap from a song of ours called “Fuckerman”:
At first it was called unlawful entry,
But I went to school and I got a degree,
So now it’s legal, see?
The sea of pleasure; gonna dive right in.
If I can’t perform, call my next of kin
Cos I come from a long line o Fuckermen.
I got a family tree, sweet pea.
I got fuckin on my pedigree.
You or her or me or we or thee; I fucked em all,
Can’t you see?
[chorus] I’m a Fuckerman. I’m a Fuckerman. I’m a Fuckerman. I’m a Fuckerman. I’m a Fucker-Fuckerman.
It was tongue-in-cheek of course. We were being clowns. I think sometimes dudes can’t be more masculine than when they are clowns in the face of the hypermasculine.
That's Funny

Haha. That's good.
I like the notion of being a clown in the face of hyper-masculine.I couldn't agree more. That seems like the great gift of levity. When in a very tough position put there by unfair circumstances that some hypermasculine "authority" figures tend to thrive on, nothing gains power back more than making a joke and laughing in the face of that.
I've got another recommendation, based on our conversation here Amy,the new Saul Williams album, "Niggy Tardust"Trent Reznor made the beats, and Saul Williams has always been great, IMO. I consider him a true artist, and 'Niggy Tardust' is truly ILL!
NAMASTE Amy

Estrogenic chemicals are extremely damaging to women, too.
Androgenius
So trip then flip and double dip- I have had all KINDS of wacky hormonal problems this year. from ovarian cysts to endometriosis to fibrous cysts in my breasts. SCWING some SIRIUS hormonal dysfunktion.
My doc said "androgynous women tend to experience ovarian cysts more. The excess estrogen turns into esterone which turns into testosterone-" and you know- I have this very cute mustache. I just had too much of everything. I am much too much of everything anyway.
But THEN- I went on natural progesterone- and my estrogen levels dropped too much and I felt- emotionally and mentally- completely like a man. I mean- I use to switch between feeling like a female a couple days and then a male for a few days- but I went male energy for about a month- and I didn't like it. I didn't feel receptive- I was totally insular- it's hard to explain.
So THEN I went on birth control and now I feel pretty much like a woman again and I think I'm generally just more pleasant to be around. I do sound like a gay boy or uber femme sometimes when I speak. And my tits have grown bigger (you know- bigger for me which is like a B), which I love.
And then there's my "wife" who wants to get his dick chopped off. He's like the yin to my yang only I finally realize it's a superior state to be female and no longer feel pissed for being born with a cunt. Oh yeah- I said it. He wishes he had a cunt- and I frankly love how emasculated he is and lets himself become at my ego-slashing scythe.
Sometimes I gross myself out by how femme I sound. Okay- so it's very complex. He wanted to go to Thailand to get his dick turned into a twat- but I convinced him to keep his sausage so we could have some semblance of heterosexual sex, so I guess it was meant to be. you know- meeting someone to prevent your dick from getting chopped off by a Thai doctor.
But siriusly- I get a kick out of male species being eradicated. I hear the "boys posing as men" query. Oh- and the women posing as men. Like- why try to imitate the lesser sex- only- being ANDROGYNOUS is so much fun!!!! End rant.
