Body Conversion

red blood cells.jpg

An Australian liver transplant recipient has adopted the blood cells and immune system of the organ donor. The teen's body also astoundingly changed blood type from type O-Negative to O-Positive and started to generate matching bone marrow. This bodily transformation seems to have been spurred by the blood stem cell's of the donated liver. Such a finding could indicate that stem cells as 'seed' cells could be introduced into a host to produce new and healthier tissues to replace those in an ailing organ.. Research is now being conducted to determine how this transformation occurred and if it can be replicated.

Jennifer, funny. you might check out a story that I ran in the first few weeks of RS news---called "Microchimerism." Something to that effect. I linked another article similar to this one. Truly a puzzling medical conundrum! Glad to see more on this. Adam Elenbaas
