The Ashevillage Building Convergence

Asheville, North Carolina isn't just a pretty place. The city that the Vanderbilt Biltmore Estate calls home is also pulling more than its weight in promoting sustainable living.

Next June, the city will host a 10-day conference and celebration called the Ashevillage Building Convergence. The plan for the conference, which is organized by the non-profit social transformation group Kleiwerks International, is for businesses, organizations, government agencies and citizens to come together to develop community projects that will serve local needs and "demonstrate beautiful whole-systems design."

These projects might include solar energy and permaculture installations, green roof building, and local food production.

According to the program's website, "Throughout the city of Asheville, commnities will come together to build beautiful neighborhood gathering places, learn sustainable solutions for our city and our world, strengthen our connections to each other, and celebrate life in Asheville."

Re-villaging the world

Thanks for the piece on ABC! I'd like to give props to the founder of Kleiwerks, Janell Kapoor, who has worked with people all over the world, teaching sustainable building practices. If you are in other cities or towns, you may consider coming on down to take part in the event next year and then organize a similar event in your hometown.
