2012 Solar Bomb

sun-200.jpg

Earth will feel the wrath of a solar storm due to hit in 2012 that astronomers are warning will be violent and dangerous to essential technology systems.  Chaos could ensue as the expected solar storm could knock out satellites in orbit, and effect power grids on Earth.  The National Academy of Sciences warns that a storm of this level could result in "1 to 2 trillion dollars in damages to society's high-tech infrastructure and require four to 10 years for complete recovery".

Another Y2K in the making or

Another Y2K in the making or the real deal?

Like Yogi Barra said, "It's deja vu all over again." We all sense, one way or another, that the status-quo can't hold. At this point I'm tempted to say "Good riddance to bad rubbish", but who really knows what's going to happen? We'll find out soon enough.

data

i have heard it could be similar to an EMP bomb in some places. i just hope that whatever catastrophe happens, we don't lose all the beautiful yet to be experienced art that is stowed away in many artists' hard drives.

A bit alarmist

COULD happen, could being the key word here. A more balanced statement can be found on NASA's web site:

I agree

Stars..and endless worlds upon worlds...

Could this possibly be an evolutionary event?

The ancients worshipped the Sun as the God of all things...the life giver....

.Native American cultures still dance to the Sun...in gratitude for it's gift of light and life...

and as Oren Lyons has mentioned...it is our oldest brother.

don't worry

i spoke about this with my uncle, who is a senior engineer with a major defense contractor. his specialty is designing satellite systems. if anyone knows what's going on on this topic, it's him. he said that they are well aware of the effects of solar storms and radiation, and the satellite systems are shielded, and thus not likely to fail. earth-based systems are likewise protected by the magnetic field around the planet. the most likely outcome is some signal interference, not a widespread failure of our technology. when given information, people tend to interpret it through the prism of their worldview. if you spend a bunch of time thinking about 2012 stuff, then of course you'll see this as a potential world-changing event. that doesn't mean it's the only or correct interpretation. if the movement to evolve the consciousness of the planet, which i fully support, is to have any real impact, its ideas must stand up to scrutiny and the highest standards of intellectual rigor. projecting hypothetical doomsday scenarios does more harm than good, especially when based on a dubious, non-expert interpretation of data. this relegates the movement into the "wingnut" category.
