The 'Teacha' Getting Open

images.jpg

Hip-hop culture is in an interesting state these days. There seems to be a groundswell of attention focusing back to the roots of the culture, while the mainstream seems to be slipping into dissolution like the global economy.

Like many things in life, the truth is just below the surface.

Here is a lecture KRS-ONE gave at Temple University about the core principles of hip-hop culture, the importance of urban environmentalism, the mystical leanings of hip-hop, and where we all may be headed in the future. Part 1, Part 2

In that Alex Jones video they speak about something very significant, IMHO.Where they both agree that kids within Hip-Hop, who are wildin out in certain ways, are inviting heat from those that want to keep them in check.

The Industry supports this behavior, so in some ways they are being set-up to be f*#ked with by the cops. And in Jones' world view, the Global Elite.

Personally, I think kids should be allowed to wild out a bit, let them make their own mistakes, and learn their own lessons, etc.

This happens in some sectors of society, but such leeway is usually not allowed kids in certain urban areas. So in order to combat the Prison-Industrial-Military Complex, KRS-ONE and other like him, i.e. Hip-Hop Heads of Conscience tell the youth to keep it cool.

MY PHILOSOPHY

The current state of Hip-Hop may be just the allegory we need for the current state of society. We do very much need to return to our roots, or at least revisit it from time to time, to get a better sense of where the heck we are heading. Right now, I couldn't be more disinterested in mainstream rap music, and I miss the days of music like Brand Nubian, Professor Griff and a Tribe Called Quest. "My Philosophy" remains one of the best and most important songs in rap history. My advice to today's rap artists: when in doubt, listen to "My Philosophy." Then sit down and write your lyrics. www.sniffcode.com

New Hip-Hop

Propaganda Anonymous

KRS has always been dope, Agreed.

One reason why I think Hip-Hop is the shitis that there is the strong Local levels to it.While the Mainstream can sputter and fall apartright there on MTV, the local scenes are strongerthan ever before. There are sooooo many dope and talented artistswithin Hip-Hop these day.And what's great is that it's All of the WORLD!

And there are different shades of Hip-Hop too. Each region in the States seems to have it's on flavor.NYC heads seem to really gravitate towards the Boom-Bap stylewith good cause.

But I find the realm of what is sometimes called "Alternative Hip-Hop" (horrible tag) to be something cool and innovative.

Then there seems to be this strange area forming, or formed, with elements of Punk and Hip-Hop.

Saul Williams and Trent Reznor's collaboration "Niggy Tardust" is a apart of that, I'd say. It's amazing, IMHO.

You got cats like CAGE who seems to walk that linebetween Hip-Hop and Punk.

And ME, haha.

Also Mos Def's album "The New Danger" I find to be SO DOPE!A phenomenal album

That's a real cool website btw sniffcode
